In that interview posted on KV at the White House, Willie didn't look like a guy who wasn't going to play hockey anymore to me. He will be back next year and hopefully will give the Kings a cheap year after that. If he has a bad wheel and feels like playing this year is going to get him hurt worse, I'm okay with that.

He's been tweeting pics of him eating at various restaurants in the LA area. To me, someone who is about to retire is going to be spending all his time at home...and he's not. Clearly it just seems his knee isn't comfortable to him and he's not going to play until it is, and there is NOTHING wrong with that. I doubt he's back for the playoffs as one poster said. Next year? Yeah I think he should be healthy by then.

... why does the media not ask questions? Are they not wondering whether he's suspended or when/how he was injured?

They have ... don't have all the various links handy, but NO Mitchell's NOT been suspended, he's listed as a non-roster player, yet attended many Kings events, personal appearances on the teams behalf ... and because he got injured during the LOCK-OUT so wasn't technically under NHL / Kings contract at the time, injured while he was training / working out, can't recall if it was weight lifting or riding bike, something like that ? and then he's had surgery, was getting better, was medically cleared, practiced with team and went on one of the road trips back when, forget which, but had set-back re-injured knee, swelling again, had the blood platelet plasma whatever treatment, got good feedback, was healing, still gets swelling, can't skate on it ... yadda yadda yadda ... so yeah it's day to day and who knows.

Realistically the Kings have to move forward with the mindset of Mitchell NOT coming back THIS SEASON, no reason to push him too hard ... but he can hopefully come back next season ? maybe an outside chance he come backs for late play-offs (ala Gange last year) then again he might never be 100% again and have to hang them up ? but do you really want to be the reporter asking THAT question to Willie ? :ha:

Meh. The Canuck fans were saying the same thing and then he helped us win the Stanley Cup. He is only signed for another year, would be a waste of a buyout and only prolong things. Might as well keep him as an ace we might be able to pull out later.
I should have mentioned if this is the worst case scenario with WM for that to take place...

Ok, here is the latest on Willie from what I know.

First, thanks Scott, great to hear another person shed some more light on things.

He is stronger today then he was two weeks ago. He keeps feeling like he is moving forward now even on the days that he hurts. His feelings are Knees are trickier then I ever knew but I am working to get back asap. I want to play for another cup' allegedly.

I remain optimistic about his return but it is more based on knowing who the guy is and how he sees things than anything else. If he could lace em up today and play through the pain the guy would.

Missing a season due to his concussion was the worst time of his life and now he is going through missing a chunk of time again.

Guy wants to play.

I still believe that the team will talk about WM either sometime this week or early next week regarding a timetable for his return. I know that they have been wanting to but have been waiting for a solid step forward to do so. So is everyone else including WM.

The only way he misses the rest of the season is if he runs into a major set back (that would be including the playoffs) and if that happens I think it could be over for him.

So the team did give us an update on Greene and have talked about WillieM too.

Now lets see when a definitive is done on WM.

There had been hope in LA Willie Mitchell might return but it's a no go. Had his knee scoped. @Real_ESPNLeBrun reports he's done for year.

I've been saying it all along, we need to move on as though both Mitchell and Greene are done for the year. Willie was great for us, I hope this doesn't mean the end of his career because I'd love to see him suit up next season for us.

I had a feeling this was going to happen.. I just didn't want to believe it. WAH. I have no idea why the Kings just didn't let us know.

And thus the reason to get Regher, if they thought they were getting Mitchell back no way Dean gives up 2 2nd round picks, the guy covets his 2nd-4th round picks.

After the season, Kings either resign Regher (if he looks good) or Scuds. If Scuds does not sign with the Kings would not be surprised to see him move over to Anaheim.

With Greene coming back, Martinez is as good as gone, and I think he could still be traded before the deadline for a 2nd or 3rd rounder if not then he will most surely be traded before the draft.

At the draft a package of Bernier and Martinez might get you a pretty good return.

Sounds definitive to me.

WM is very disappointed as expected but at least we now know where we stand. DL waited as long as he could to find out exactly what was up to pull the trigger so there was allot of hope.

Too bad for WM and too bad for us. He should just have the surgery.

To be or not to be is no longer the quesiton. The question is now "Is Mitchell done forever?"

More or less what everybody expected. I suppose Regehr would have cost Lombardi three 2nds if they'd made this news known earlier.

Fingers crossed for next season, but wouldn't be surprised* if Mitchell doesn't make it back.

*Guess not based any more info than anybody else has.

Sounds like WM is by no means done playing and simply put off the actual surgery because he knew that would put him out for a while and he was working hard on coming back. Turns out, nothing was working so
he said screw it and just had the surgery so he'd be ready for next year.

No problems whatsoever with all of that. Regehr gives us some punch on the back end and prepares us for quite possibly another run. But honestly, with Quick's struggles this season I've gotten the distinct feeling it's just not our year. Rather have WM and MG fully healthy and Quick back to form next year for a legit run than try to shovel a bunch of injured players out there to recapture the magic.

I hope Mitchell is back healthy next year. If he's back and we re-sign one of Regehr or Scuderi our D is going to be scary good.

DD - Mitchell
VV - Scuderi/Regehr
Greene - Muzzin/Amart

If he makes it back for next year that's probably his last as an LA King. Finding a long term partner for DD08 has to be at the top of Lombardi's todo list.

The same question came up here in Montreal with Markov who underwent the same operation. Markov and Mitchell have only 4 months age differential. And to the surprise of many, Markov is having a great season (shortened but great).

So, don't throw the towel away for Mitchell.

Who ever said that Greene was done for the year???

In any case, I have a stanley cup related question: If we repeat as the champs, does Willie get his name on the cup? My thinking is no.
