We had these guys called Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf, I'd like to remind you. And if you want to talk polarizing players who the fanbase took years to get over, what about our ex-captain, Mats Sundin?

And that's just getting into high profile polarizing players; I remember quite a number of low profile polarizing players. For example, Brett Lebda? Jeff Finger? Dmitri "forgot how to score in Toronto" Khristich?

WTF do "low polarizing players" have to do with anything? What I said was that Marner is "maybe the most polarizing player to play for the Leafs in the last 50 years". Note the word "maybe" - I wasn't making a factual statement, just saying that Marner is very polarizing, maybe the most polarizing in the last 50 years. It's just an opinion and if you don't share it that's fine.

There have been other players who were polarizing to some degree, Kessel and Phaneuf were mentioned earlier and I already responded to that but there's no reason to mention guys like Lebda (just one example). I mean if I had opined that Marner is the only polarizing player in Leaf history then maybe you'd have a reason to mention some of these other guys but again, the conversation is about being the most polarizing Leaf player in the last 50 years so Jeff Finger, I really don't think so.

I’m secretly hoping that Mitch gets fed up and is happy to move along.
Of the core four, he’s made the most sense to move in my mind. Great player without a doubt, won’t be replaceable 1-1, but the best bet to return some value and flexibility.
I’m pretty prepared for the team to move on after next year.

He is very polarizing. Nylander has been that too, but more almost all hate, when he gets hate, more then half loves when he is loved. I think Marner wins the polarizing prize right now. But with more fans who love him always. Two quite solid camps for and against. That aint hating. Just how it is.

I am on Marner camp, but i want more from the Matthews Marner duo this playoff.

Those seem to be situations where the acquisition, usage, or expectations vs results were polarizing. In Marner's case it seems to be more his personality.

Personally, I don't really care about how he, or any player, deals with the media. If anything, I'd rather see a real reaction, like his or like Willy's nonchalance, than deadpan rote responses.

Only Research papers on effective leadership of team captains indicate it matters what they say.

His attitude is very immature. He's much too emotional.
He is too emotional and not strong enough between the ears. This interview is just a snippet of what happens to him during playoffs when things get emotional/higher stake.

His talent is undeniable. But he needs a good shrink. Connect him with whoever helped get Sammy going again

If he shows he is capable of playing at an elite level for the entire playoffs (not just the first 4 games) and is a big part of us winning at least one round, that's the only way I'd be happy with keeping him. I'm also think he will be resigned no matter what so I'm not looking at the future with much optimism at this point.

It's a subjective thing so no way to measure it, Marner to me takes the prize though. His high points are higher than Nylander (1st team all-star), and his low points are lower (playoff performance and an overwhelming majority voted to trade him rather than keep him). His cap hit is also much higher and is a point of controversy.

More from M&M in the playoffs, yes indeed!

Yeah I've been saying a good sports shrink is what he needs for years now. And nobody would care about him saying dumb things in interviews if his words/attitude didn't seem to be an accurate reflection of who he is when the pressure gets cranked up.

I would pay to watch a chat between Sammy's Dad and Marner.

Ilya Samsonov discloses father's role in getting him back to NHL-level goaltending

"It doesn't matter what's going on. You have a family. You have a kid. You are not a small guy anymore. You're not in a kid's garden. You live in a big life.' This is really helping for me, extra motivation, and good to learn this."

He needs to play in a small market. Big market with tons of media attention he can’t handle. The guy would thrive in Columbus or Arizona.

Yeah, in my imaginary world, they win the whole enchilada, everyone plays great, and he wants out. With nothing left to achieve here, leaving no regrets.

Your scenario is more likely though. I’d stay optimistic, just not that any big changes will happen to the roster for a longggg time. (There’s pros and cons both ways, but big shifts can be fun).

Well, he still thrives here, he’s verrryy good….but he’d have less focus on him and he could direct it on the game and his life.

I’m a huge marner fan and i think he hasn’t been that bad in the playoffs previously.
But last year he disappointed me and i thought he was playing hurt….. but wasn’t.
This year he has to get it done, or even for me, it will be time to move on.

Leafs are 6-3-1 with Marner injured. 40 gf and 27 ga, +13 goal differential.

Matthews: 10 games 6 goals 15 points
Tavares: 10 games 5 goals 8 assists 13 points.
Nylander: 10 games 6 goals 5 assists 11 points

Not to shambly!
The scoring looks pretty balanced among the other 3. The true test would be to add that 11 million back into the team and I bet we would be even better

You bet based on nothing. The only ones I ever saw tackle value based on contract was the athletic who had Marner providing surplus value of 3.7 million.
Elite players are not linearly divisible by contract and skill. They are often under paid for their value relative to everyone else.
You can bet away but you have contradicting evidence that just plowing 11mm back into the team would make the team better at all. I can't believe people are still talking about this nonsense given the information shared by people who actually know the game. This has been dealt with time and time again. Unless you have specific trades in mind, you should just stop. It really isn't worthy of any constructive discussion.
