Remind me again what we have won with him and this core making hundreds of millions of dollars? Keeping him and overpaying him is not necessarily the correct move after 8 years of playoff failure.Delusional. Letting Marner walk to use his money elsewhere is a ridiculous thought, he’s one of the best Leafs of all time. He’s signed to a large contract because he’s worth the large contract. Letting him walk would make our team worse no matter how you spend the money.
Likely going to post a career high. Are we going to boo him because he can’t beat his career high next year?
Remind me again which teams have let their best player walk and got better?Remind me again what we have won with him and this core making hundreds of millions of dollars? Keeping him and overpaying him is not necessarily the correct move after 8 years of playoff failure.
This high octane tournament is another example of Mitch not being able to keep up with the big boys. Forget his OT goal because there is no 3 on 3 OT in playoffs.
If this guy was a team guy and had half a brain, he would have taken the Nylander deal based on the new cap. $12.5m-$12.8m and gained some goodwill from the fanbase. Was listening to Bryson yesterday and he asks his clients, do you want to make $500K more in a market you won't be happy in or $500K less in a market you will be happy in? Clearly Mitch wants both.
I got no time for this guy if he wants more than Matthews. Let him fail for another team.
Can you show his regulation highlights? The one where he tries to finish his check against the boards and falls on his face is comical.
Pay cut? How is $12.5m to $12.8m a paycut after he's been overpaid for the last 6 years by over $1.5m based on Rantanen?Remind me again which teams have let their best player walk and got better?
Blaming playoff success on 1 player is also delusional. Marner does way more than just get points for this team. People like you are just looking for someone to blame but in reality it’s just really hard to win in this league and the goal is to ice the best team possible to give you the best chance at winning every year. Keeping Mitch is the correct move every time unless you could trade him for a haul, but since he has full NMC that’s just not an option.
You think Marner should take a pay cut but I guarantee if you were in his shoes you would want to be paid what you are worth.

Look if his position is I don't know. Let him go. Ask him to waive. There is not freaking point playing games like this. Matthews said he is in. Nylander said I am all in. This guy is a freaking wishy washy soft playoff player with poor character IMHO. Like dealing with a manipulative person, this guy. He is playing I am going to hold you hostage and not waive.
Cut bait. He is a POS person. You don't walk away from someone like this. You run.
He has muscle. He is what he is, a small, soft, playmaking winger who cannot get it done in big games. Sayin we get worse if we let him walk is fear mongering. Look at what Tanev has brought for $4.5m? Life will continue if Marner walks folks. Please do not jump of any bridges or in front of a subway train.Based on his playoff performances and the stuff out of the media I am hearing, I want nothing to do with him. His cap makes winning impossible for what he is and I am equally horrified with the prospect of paying JT 7m.
People! He is 165lbs soaking wet with no muscle mass. He can not handle a physical playoff series. We can not win with a 13m softy

You nailed it and it is why the Leafs are afraid to let him walk. The thing is, they must not overpay. Fans are tired of the same old rerun and they will be more toxic than they were last summer if they do not get to the ECF and look good doing so.After 8 years of constant embarrassing exits, people want change. I understand that. Matty and Nylander are already signed with NTC/NMC, makes it harder to walk away from them. I get that0
I think what people are missing is Marner is an asset, we have a weak farm system
WOW...
1) Elliott makes a living out of making shit up for click bait, that is how he pays his mortgage, some people who dont have a good Bullshit detector, get suckered in, take it as gospel and form baseless groundless opinions.
2) He's a POS person? WOW, just WOW. Marner Assist Foundation
The goal of the Marner Assist Foundation is to generate sustainable change for children and youth by providing resources that will make a significant impact on their lives. The focus is to provide assistance in the areas of children’s social care, health, education as well as supporting environmental causes to ensure our children have a sustainable future.

They dont usually include highlight packages for scoring chances but they do for the save of the game:
Marner also involved in a bunch of good chances twice setting up Reinhart from prime areas and feeding McDavid all alone in the first on a play McJesus usually finishes. He also did well in his role on the PK and as a defensive presence on his line. McDavid offensive chance numbers were pretty much in line for how they look with the Oilers this year and thats against all world defenders.
In the end, that line created far more than any other line but, hey, the Swedish D may be the best in the tourney. They held a Crosby/Mackinnon/Stone line to only 5 scoring chances all game and their goalie played well.
5v5, Canada edged Sweden 26-20 for scoring chances and 10-5 for high danger chances.
The Reinhart/McDavid/Marner line were 10-4 for scoring chances and 5-2 high danger chances.
It;s just the first game and everyone is still gelling but its a great sign IMO.
The Toews play was sweet but I found it interesting that his pass to McDavid was from the blue line while Toews was the one in the slot where Hyman would normally be. Tonight will be a good indication of whether Marner can be a difference maker in a big game. No excuses.

He saved the tournament for Rogers and Bettman IMO.Well, he did score the biggest clutch goal in Canadian hockey the last decade but I'm down to see him do if again.
I actually expect more from MacKinnon and McDavid tonight. They have been waiting years for this chance and they gripped the stick a little too tight in the big moments. Its not like they didnt get their chances. No more missing the net or shooting it into the goalies pads.
He's great in the regular season, but he disappears after 86 games. We've had 8 consecutive seasons of sub.500 hockey in the playoffs, how much worse could we get?Delusional. Brady played the first biggest game of his career against the Finns and scored two goals. When was the last time Marner scored two goals in a playoff game? He has 11 in 57 playoff games and 3 since November 30, 2024.
He saved the tournament for Rogers and Bettman IMO.
I'd say Nick Paul's Golden goal in 2017 was a bigger clutch goal but yes, we need to see Marner do it again.

lol at letting an all star player walk just to talk to a playerUnless mcdavid wants to leave edmonton
Then maybe there is more to this than we know
Ted rogers wont be afraid to throw the max a mcdavid
He went all in on ohtani and the leafs are worth a record 3.5 billion
Ya u let marner walk if u have a chanxe at mcdavid

Guarantee his camp is eyeing a 2-year deal. Cap projections have it going up magnitudes in a couple years time (though myself personally, I suspect real word economy problems are going to get in the way of this) and signing long-term now versus a couple years time could mean a galaxy's difference in $$$. Mitch is money hungry, it's obviously no secret, he's not looking to lock himself out of potential paydays with a cap that's $110M+![]()
Mitch Marner's Status with Toronto Maple Leafs Still Yet to be Determined
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner still hasn't signed an extension with the Leafs; Will he remain with the club past 2025?insidetherink.com
The Toronto Maple Leafs might be reaching a crossroads with unrestricted free agent winger Mitch Marner, as NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported recently that the star forward is not close to deciding whether he wants to get to free agency. Marner will become an unrestricted free agent and will be free to sign with other teams on July 1, which has led to rumors of potential trades involving the 27-year-old forward.
“Unless there’s something going on that I’m not seeing right now, which is always possible, I don’t sense Mitch Marner is anywhere close to making a decision [about free agency],” Friedman said Monday on Sportsnet 590.
Marner has scored 16 goals with 55 assists through 54 games this season. The Toronto Maple Leafs winger is reaching the end of a six-year, $65.41 million contract that includes a full no-move clause, giving Marner control to veto any possible deal.
Marner’s status with Toronto was further examined after the Colorado Avalanche traded forward Mikko Rantanen to Carolina after it was reported that Rantanen was seeking upwards of $14 Million per year as an unrestricted free agent. Hockey insider Frank Seravalli reported that Colorado first inquired about Marner before moving on to receiving young star forward Martin Necas from the Hurricanes.
Friedman had also stated on January 30 that Marner did not want to be moved midseason and that contract talks had not gained any traction either. At this point, the Leafs will have to wait and see if they can retain Marner this offseason or risk losing the valuable winger for nothing in free agency unless Marner decides to accept a trade. This is a situation to watch as the trade deadline approaches.
You didn’t even read my post if you think I said he took a pay cut. I don’t think he should take a pay cut.Pay cut? How is $12.5m to $12.8m a paycut after he's been overpaid for the last 6 years by over $1.5m based on Rantanen?
Who's blaming 1 player for lack of playoff success? The truth is, this core does not work and cannot be run back if they do not get to the ECF. Running it back, hoping things will change is what is dilutional.
What excuse will be left if they fail this year after changing the coach, and bolstering the D and G?
Prospects: Knies will bring more production next year, though Cowan and Minten are long shots. After 8 years of constant embarrassing exits, people want change. I understand that. Matty and Nylander are already signed with NTC/NMC, makes it harder to walk away from them. I get that. I think what people are missing is Marner is an asset and we have a weak farm system. If he left we would have to replace his production with prospects, a trade or a UFA. Since we dont have a lot of assets, probably not goign to see that production from a rookie. Since our assets are not great, we are not trading any of our assets to get a 1st line production type player. If we want to replace him through UFA, that means we are probably over paying for UFA, UFA's who generate 90+ points a year typically dont leave their teams to go to another team at a team friendly contract.
The construct people (haters) have built that if we just dump Mitch and then all that cap room means we suddenly become cup contenders are at best dreaming in technicolor. You have to do somethign with that cap but we are extremely limited in what we can do. In managements mind, if you keep mitch you keep 90+points plus elite defensive play.
It's because we are tired of watching the same shit for the past 8 years. He is a soft player. Always will be.You didn’t even read my post if you think I said he took a pay cut. I don’t think he should take a pay cut.
You are blaming Mitch for the leafs failures. That’s what I read.
I can’t wait until Mitch re-signs. It sucks that it feels like I’m the minority.
Prospects: Knies will bring more production next year, though Cowan and Minten are long shots.
Trade: We don't have many assets, but enough to land one high level player. With more cap space you open up the aperture of possible candidates for that big time acquisition.
UFA: The benefit here is that you can acquire multiple pieces, gain long term flexibility, and it's a multi year advantage. Most importantly, looking back this would have been the better path each year, for quite a stretch. Though this year could change that fact, so we'll see.
They might have to ask him for permission to move him. They can't let him walk for nothing.![]()
