Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Thanks Paul I didn't realize free agents can talk to any team

We're talking about a guy basically sending open invites to the teams he "wants" to sign with, more than half of them are likely being talked to just as leverage. Which is what he's trying to do with Toronto, took one out of Dubas' book.
No worries, you seem pretty confused on how it works.

After the draft teams can talk with upcoming free agents.

I've read they can't talk numbers, but also read they can talk contracts.

Nothing can be signed, until free agency signing period starts.

With how quickly contracts are signed and reported, my guess everything except signing is one in many cases.

2 weeks ...
I imagine he wants to visit the cities where he'll spend the next x amount of years, not seeing why this is so outrageous.
Just seems like more mindless froth.

Apparently he cancelled his charity event?

Don’t most athletes with similar events simply maintain them even when moving on from the events permanent location?
You know there would be idiots showing up and burning jerseys, yelling things, etc.
I can think of a few that would probably plan a bus trip.

It's the kids that lose out on the opportunity to meet many players and that's a shame.

I would have to go back and check, but I want to say that Zach Hyman continued his charity golf tournament the summer he was a UFA and left eventually for Edmonton?

I seem to recall that. Could be wrong though.

Obviously Marner is a very different situation to Hyman, so it's understandable why he has cancelled. I would do, in his shoes.

Stamkos did something similar a few years ago no? Toured a bunch of places, got wined and dined a ton and then went back and signed with the Lightning.

I love Marner, I think his presence will be missed during the regular season, but if the Leafs resign him I hope it's without a NMC this time around.

The next team signing Marner will likely have to dole out a NMC as well. Long term, high dollar deal with a no trade attached = disaster in the making.

Mitch Marner is the Leafs Jonathan Huberdeau (who was the Cats leading scorer with 116 points), and the Florida Panthers turned their organization around 180 and into a Cup contender when they found their Matthew Tkachuk.

Treliving needs to find the Leafs Tkachuk to replace Marner and factoring in his DNA statement it needs to be a hard nose, big physically imposing player.

Perhaps that needs to come from multiple players like Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand types if possible.

Every top end guy gets one, that won't change no matter where he signs.

My guess he already knows about the cities he's played in, and he's been off the ice for weeks.

Now knowing different areas of the cities is different, but his suitors likely have a tonne of information about where their players live, et cetera, that they'll be sharing.

Isn't like middle class people searching out the best places to avoid in Toronto.

It is absolutely not a hard place to play. The fans in the building are pathetic. The media asks the easiest useless questions..."what was the difference in this game? " "what have you learned about so and so since you've been here?" blah blah. Sure there are more of them but they are dumb and never ask hard questions. No one ever gets benched. No one gets taken off the PP or sent to the 4th line. Aside from game 7, no one gets booed. They get literally everything they want, and there isn't even pressure to win a cup, just win a few rounds. And still they constantly fail. If they are actually meeting with Marner on July 1st that is absolutely pathetic. Let this loser walk, he accomplished absolutely nothing here, and will accomplish absolutely nothing with his next team.

I’m always flabbergasted when Mark Masters starts asking random people what they think of the pressure in Toronto and the media and noise, it’s like he’s amazed at his own power to influence.

If you’re intimidated by these guys individually and collectively don’t know what to say about your mental strength as a pro athlete:

Mark Masters
Chris Johnston
Nick Kypreos
Justin Bourne
Sam McKee
Bryan Hayes
Jeff O’Neill
Jamie McLennan
Luke Fox
Rosie DiManno
Nick Alberga
Jay Rosehill
Jonas Siegel
James Mirtle
Darren Dreger
Pierre LeBrun
Mike Johnson
Craig Button
Jay Onrait
Steve Simmons
Mark Zeisberger
Steve Dangle
Adam Wylde
Jesse Blake

That’s the big media machine?

A team with brains would have traded him before the NMC kicked in.

Dubas didn’t. And Shanny prevented Tre from doing it.
The warning signs were there...both Dubas and Shanny were soft as butter, and incompetent at building a championship team...Marner should have been traded after the Montreal series when he was crying in the penalty box...what kind of hockey player cries in the penalty box of a game 6 when your team is still in the game, and up 3-2 in the series? I could understand crying over losing the Cup in the finals, but that?

Oddly enough, Marner was all smiles when he posted that picture of him jetting off to the cottage after a playoff loss.

Yes he would have information but there is nothing wrong with seeing for yourself, meeting/talking face to face.
If it was only about money, he'd sit at his cottage and just wait for the biggest deal to come in.

One other thing I'm hearing about Marner, there's the possibility again; there's still two weeks who knows where it will end up. There is a chance this is not a July 1 thing, but his choice is to set up Zoom or in person meetings on July 1 or thereafter.

I was told that's one of the possibilities, there's time, but that's not out of the question. - Elliotte Friedman

So Marner thinks that teams will put all of Free Agency on hold, just for the pleasure of being one of the teams who will bid on him?
Who does Marner think he is? He may as well do a Lebron style TSN show just to tell people where he is signing.

Here's Willie all smile after winning a cooler. Light the torches!

Usually, but I think in this case it's warranted. There is enough dislike for Marner now, let alone if he signs elsewhere. There are enough crazies out there, to do, or say something that shouldn't be... I mean even this thread confirms that. It's best if he just moves on from Toronto as a whole.

If I had to meet the CEO of Canadian Tire I wouldn't want to sign in Toronto either

There's 2 names on that list that would ask anything resembling an awkward question that couldn't be answered in cliches and hyperbole (Simmons and Rosie).

Long gone are the days where Berger and Feschuk would show up to pressers with metaphorical knives - it's also likely why neither of them work on the beat anymore.

Different player but I recall Matthews raving about Vegas.

Oh yeah Feschuk forgot about him. Can add Colaiacovo, Korolnek, JD Bunkis and some of the Sportsnet radio people as well.

Yeah the mainstream guys are all vanilla and some of the podcast guys deeper on the bench might be edgier, but if a pro athlete is listening to some of those podcasts I think there’s your problem right there.
