Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Excerpts

NHL insider Darren Dreger on TSN Radio 1050,

Dreger laid out a timeline that will have general managers across the league holding their breath. Marner and his camp are planning to entertain a select group of suitors after the free agency bell rings on July 1st. This won’t be a series of quick phone calls; we’re talking about a full-blown tour. Marner, along with his family, intends to visit a handful of chosen cities, meet with management, and get a feel for the organization before making a final commitment. The target date for a decision, as Dreger indicated, is around July 15th.

Hopefully everyone commits their cap elsewhere, and Marner is busy playing Musical chairs on his own, without a chair left to sit on.
I can't think of a player that has ever received such bad advice.
I know he's as dumb as a bag of hammers but he must see how this could turn out to be a really bad idea and so unnecessary.
Hopefully it all works out.

Maple Leafs Confirmed to Have a Meeting Set with Mitch Marner . Amid a very public and messy separation, Marner has reportedly set a meeting with the Maple Leafs to give them one final chance to re-sign him post July 1st.

In sharing the news that Marner had been avoiding the Leafs, Friedman noted that his decision may not be made until well after July 1st as the former first-round pick has the intention of setting up meetings with potential suitors and then visiting those that are deemed 'finalists'. One of those meetings is reportedly being given to the Leafs, according to Friedman, which garnered a laugh from co-host Kyle Bukauskas.

At this point, fans and pundits are wondering what the point of the meeting is, given Marner's lack of willingness to negotiation or help facilitate a sign-and-trade.

Thanks, but no thanks... the last thing I want this org to do, is to be held hostage by a guy who won't make his decision until July 15th, and we miss out on other opportunities.

While most insiders believe that the Marner domino is likely the first one to fall and hold up others, they also believe other teams are not going to wait around forever without moving on,

A team is going to need a lot of cap space to sign Marner. He is only going to be able to hold the league hostage for so long.

Treliving tried to trade away Marner multiple times and even ask him to waive his NMC which apparently has bruised Marner's ego. Nothing in more clear then actions speaking louder than words that BT prefers to move on..

You can bet Leafs will not be waiting on the line for Marner and busy trying to find replacement players addressing the new DNA issues.

The Marner camp makes it seem like they're going out there to collect all offers and then give the Leafs one last chance to meet or beat it... Talk about being tone death and misreading the room.

This is not a Stephen Stamkos type situation where TB gave him a best final offer a few years ago, and then after checking UFA offers had a chance to return to his own team and accept the contract..

There is no contract offer on the table for Marner to consider from the Leafs.

The way I see it Marner is literally asking teams to join him for a bidding war. Biggest ego in hockey by faaaaar. Inviting teams to meet with your camp lol, Leafs shouldn't entertain it.

"These are all the teams I'm willing to sign with, you're all invited to engage in conversation with my camp"

Hopefully we commit to the Cap elsewhere and then Marner can tour and wine and dine with 31 other teams.

The Pittsburgh Pens seem to be having a house cleaning sale..

Pens have apparently told Malkin there will be no future contracts coming from the organization.

Anybody else interested Leafs perhaps inquiring into Evgeni Malkin on the last year of his deal makiing $6.1 mil and will be 38 years old, and bringing him in as 2nd line C and help replace the Marner offense?

Matthews As #1C --- Malkin ($6.1 mil) as #2C --- Tavares (at 1/2 price) as #3C

The savings on Tavares will cover a big portion of the Malkin contract.

Well if Marner is getting full blown tours of facilities maybe there isn't tampering. Honestly you'd feel like such a killer I might do the same

Exactly. It's over. Let him sign a retirement deal somewhere else. He's screwed the team enough.

You realize that's how UFA works? Players are free to talk to other teams? Any UFA's that come to Toronto will also be talking to other teams.

Point is - whether you agree with it or not, the idea that Toronto is a tough/toxic/difficult market is now out there, no doubt reinforced by the fact that a 100-point homegrown local talent is walking away without as much as a conversation with the organization.

Yeah but that Toronto reputation has to be balanced with what people think of Mitch Marner in the game. Yeah people talk about what a great guy he is all the time, but you don’t think Brad Marchand’s soft clowning of him means there’s a certain view about him one way or another?

Nobody should be surprised that Marner and his agent Ferris are looking for a grand courting and "Pomp and circumstance" event league wide trying to recruit him.

Marner's self worth and "Ego holds no bounds" [ an unrestrained or excessive ego that disregards limits or consequences ].

This could manifest as an inflated sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy, or a tendency to prioritize personal desires and ambitions above all else.

How else can you explain Marner (with a straight face) asking to become the highest paid player in the game and think much of the league is lining up to court him?

That's some peak derangement and projection on Marner right there. Marner is still a top forward in this league, one of the best talents out there... plenty of teams would like one of the most talented players in the league on their team. Hell, if Marner was on another team, half of our fanbase would be crawling all over each other to sign him.

There is no question his play drops in the playoffs, and that we need to make changes, but your take isn't based in reality... it's just weird.

The problem with Marner is always the pay day he is looking to achieve vs the adverse affects to a championship pursuit because of the pressures it puts on the ability to properly support him. The whole Marner is a talented good boy angle always lacks nuance in terms of what adding a guy at Draisaitl dollars who doesn’t do Draisaitl things will do to your team. Hopefully not our problem moving forward. Theres more to building a team that collecting the rarest talent.

It’s basically the Brad Richards Newport kiss the ring ceremony. Let the guy have it.

One of the more fascinating parts of the next few weeks, is that we are going to find out to a certain extent just what the perception of Marner is around the league.

I suspect that he's viewed far more favorably than we think.

We know someone like Jon Cooper loves him, for example. And if teams are lining up for his services? They see something very different to what we do.

Thanks Paul I didn't realize free agents can talk to any team

We're talking about a guy basically sending open invites to the teams he "wants" to sign with, more than half of them are likely being talked to just as leverage. Which is what he's trying to do with Toronto, took one out of Dubas' book.

Darren Dreger was reporting Marner might drag out the process till mid July and take his sweet time. So I think this is a player who is basically coming out of a long relationship and wants to feel wooed. Hopefully the Leafs just mind their own business and keep a wide berth from this.

After the draft teams can talk with upcoming free agents.

I've read they can't talk numbers, but also read they can talk contracts.

Nothing can be signed, until free agency signing period starts.

With how quickly contracts are signed and reported, my guess everything except signing is done in many cases.

2 weeks ...

I'd love to see MLSE turn their nose away from him. July 15? Screw that. If Marner doesn't want to be part of the team, cut him loose.

I remember back when the Leafs were courting Tavares to TO as a UFA that they put on a big PowerPoint presentation (a digital slideshow format, commonly used for visual communication and presentations) and even included Marner (as a prop) in that selling him as JT future winger in their recruitment process.

Sounds like Marner wants teams to court him now similarly. Explaining not only his $$ financial reward, but his fit on the team, his expected role and even get an all expenses paid guided tour of their city to sway his selection.

I'd take the meeting, then sit down at the table and say, "Ok, convince us why we want to sign you".

Petty? Sure. Worth it? Absolutely!
