Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

If Necas is remotely available, I would have an interest, 8.5M x 7 years? 9M?
What would a trade even look like? Knies is too valuable. Colorado cant afford Matthews. And they just traded away Rantanen, so I doubt they'd want to pay a worse version (Nylander) nearly the same money.
Did Jeannot have a very good season or something because I remember it wasn't that long ago that alot of this board was clowning on the guy for being a scrub.
Jeannot did ok in a 4th line role for LA. Certainly better than he did in TB.
Jonas Siegel suggests Brent Burns as a possibility for us to target. Fits the big body profile that Treliving, and although he is 40, he still brings offensive ability and, believe it or not, plays a ton on the PK. I would be interested in Burns at a lower price point. Not my first option as I'd like to get younger, but on a 1 year deal I have heard worse ideas.
This is one of those where youve gotta step back and think, why would a cupless 40 yr old look at this team and think yup, thats where I want to spend my last season or two?

I'd be surprised if he left Carolina, but if they do split I'd guess its one of FLA, TB, VGK or DAL for him

He's not going to cost us an entire draft class to obtain

He's not a 20 goal guy that Tampa paid for.

But for us if he puts up 10 goals and is the most physical guy on the ice, I think it's a great move for change in culture.

Think he's been on the block before too. Maybe he just wants out and wants to play meaningful hockey for once. Probably gonna be another 2 years before Anaheim is contending for the playoffs if their young guys live up to expectation and he'll almost be 30 by then. I doubt the Necas rumours are true but if they are then I'm sure Terry would love to go home and Necas could get his chance to play C in Anaheim and Colorado could also get a pick or 2 back. Necas might cost too much for Colorado on his next contract so having Terry locked up for 5 more years at 500k more than Necas current deal helps them out a lot too. Seems like a win-win for both sides

Edit:

Turns out he was wrong

This is so dumb. If it's not a primary source, shouldn't he have at least a couple of other teams backing him up?

These people are so bad at their jobs and so starved for X attention that they'll f***ing tweet anything.

I don’t understand why there’s so many untouchables for a team that can’t get past the 2nd round.

Woll could be their most tradeable asset. It also depends if Tre intends to extend Stolarz this July.
Stolarz is who id trade woll has a longer future based on age and wed get a nice return

Benoit looks really good out there. He can skate, he's tough, he plays the right way...

But he bleeds chances against, and our results with him on the ice is pretty terrible. Worst on the team in possession, Goal %, Expected Goal %,

We need an addition, of a guy who can move the puck better, and well... he's the guy we need to look at for that fix. I'm happy trying to go with a 6/7 rotation though, depending on circumstances... and our challenge is allocating a spot, without a lot of cap room to spend on the spot.

Ekblad would be a nice add, but we would be so thin up front to do it, without moving off of Rielly's cap hit... which again, doesn't seem likely.

Now, I know this one is going to get you in the gut... LOL... but the guy we should add, is Brandt Clarke. I know he's not going to be available... but he's going to be a player, and would be the exact right addition to the Leafs, in lieu of Benoit.
Probably coulda had him if we moved marner before the no trade went into effect

Is stolarz a sell high candidate? This is statistically he’s best season with over 10 games started in one season. He’s turning 32 and based on his potential next contract the return on investment is likely low.

If he has another good year he’s in line for a big contract that might not be worth it. If he has a bad year then we are left wondering if he is worth signing him.

Most of it is role issues, similar to OEL in Vancouver v. a bottom pairing guy here or in FLA

He's a decent 4th line option with some upside (and downside) but not worth the cost acquisition that TB paid or the overhype prior

Look at all the teams that need a goaltender. It’s CBJ, PHI, PIT, maybe BUF, maybe DET. Of those teams which ones which be looking for a rental on a cheap deal? They are all looking for a long-term solution.

Robertson, Holmberg, Kampf, Jarkrok, Reaves... Seems like Tre needs to find a home for all these guys and it won't be easy. And tbh I don't feel great too about Domi, Laughton or Mcmann either right now.

Really outside of Knies-Matthews-Nylander it seems like our entire bottom 9 needs a shakeup. I don't know how Tre is going to do it, but I've got a feeling that if he F's this summer up he's going to be setting us up for a full rebuild/teardown within 2 years

Sign Bennett 7yrs x 8 million
Sign Tanev 3 yrs x 1.75 million
Sign Marchand 3 yrs x 7 million
Sign Mangiapane 3 yrs x 3.5 million

Trade Mcmann,Benoit,Danford and 2nd Round Pick to Utah for Crouse, Kesselring and McBain

Marchand-Matthews-Nylander
Knies-Bennett-Domi
Mangiapane-McBain-Crouse
Lorentz-Laughton-Tanev

Mccabe-Tanev
Rielly-Carlo
OEL-Kesselring

Acquiring Zibanejad and Bertuzzi on the cheap. Signing Brown, Tanev and Raddysh in free agency. After Pacioretty’s bonus gets deducted and Benning and Reaves cap hits for being sent down, we wouldn’t have any cap for an extra player with this lineup. Also no additional puck mover on the blueline. Adding Zibanejad and his full cap hit definitely makes it harder to make all the necessary changes we need but it does address the 2C position.

Bertuzzi(5.5) - Matthews(13.25) - Domi(3.75)
Knies(7.2) - Zibanejad(8.5) - Nylander(11.5)
McMann(1.35) - Tavares(4.5) - Brown(2.65)
Tanev(2) - Laughton(1.5) - Raddysh(1.5)

Rielly(7.5) - Carlo(3.49)
McCabe(4.51) - Tanev(4.5)
Benoit(1.35) - Ekman Larsson(3.5)

Stolarz(2.5) - Woll(3.67)

Cap Hit: 94.22
Cap Space: 1.28

My approach has been: (using your line-up)

Bertuzzi(5.5) - Matthews(13.25) - Domi(3.75)
Knies(7.2) - Zibanejad(8.5) - Nylander(11.5)
McMann(1.35) - Tavares(4.5) - Brown(2.65)

Rielly(7.5) - Carlo(3.49)
McCabe(4.51) - Tanev(4.5)
Benoit(1.35) - Ekman Larsson(3.5)

Stolarz(2.5) - Woll(3.67)

All players want more ice time, just dress 2 4th. liners.
They should be PK, and mop up.

So are they. What picks would you be happy to get from Edmonton for Stolarz?
They have a need in net. We have a surplus in net. Makes sense for them to use an asset to acquire a need and we're doing the same

First plus more is what I'd like prospect or second is ideal given his contract and the lack of options

I am hyper focused on waking up in the morning, and seeing they haven't dropped the bomb in my neighourhood.

I hope they mean in addition to Tavares.

They need to sign 2 centers.
