Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

North America Cup is on. Miki and Minnie with Dexter Dunn just won the Fan Hanover.

Dexter Dunn drove Bulldog Hanover, the fastest and most handsome standardbred horse ever.
Sorry but until you said horse I had no idea what you were talking about.lol
I should have known that. My wife and daughter are horse fanatics. We have 2 on the property but they are not race horses

Marchand with 2 goals tonight puts him at 10 in 22 games, not only is this obviously way more than Mitch ever produced in his best playoffs (3 goals), the pace in terms of gpg is .46 and this is nearly 3x as much as Mitch's career playoff gpg.

Should a 37 year old SMALLER (likely slower) completely CLOWN Mitch's totals in Toronto? The answer is obviously not, but it goes to show you the sort of soft/heartless player Mitch was/is.

(I didn't make the comparison with 40 year old Perry because this would be unfair to Mitch as he's taller and weighs more, we need to have the lowest possible standards for Mitch, but it goes to show you how it was never his "small size" but lack of other "intangibles")

"Congrats on tripling my career playoff goal best at nearly 40 years old Brad"
It really does put into play how bad Marner has been in the playoffs especially elimination games

Would be nice if the Leafs could trade Reilly, Kampf and Calle then sign Marchand, Bennett and Ekblad.

Maybe once MM sees that, he will stay for a million just to see if he can win with the Leafs.

This may be true, but the fact is Bennett will resign in FLA and it'll be for a much lower cap hit than he'd get in the open market. Zito does not f*** around.
Agree, unless Bennett wants every penny possible like some players we know. I think he will stay with the Panthers as long as the offer is fair.

Florida, particularly Bob, were awful in games 1 and 2 and once they got their game straightened out it wasn’t much of a contest

I can’t imagine Marchand wanting to play on team with no chance of winning, especially when he knows exactly why they can’t win.

Game 5 was today? I thought it was tomorrow.
Well, we won game 6 so ... at the end of the day, it went to game 7 so I think it's fair to say it was a contest.

There's no way to know what Marchand is thinking. Maybe he'll figure we were so close that he could have put us over the top. If he did it for us next year, it'd be a huge feather in his cap for sure.

Game 5 was indeed today.

Losing a top player for absolutely nothing is a huge loss and the fact this needs to be explained to you says a lot.
We're not losing our top player, and we're not losing him for absolutely nothing.

Marner is maybe our third best player, and we are saving $13-14M by not signing him.

The fact that this needs to be explained to you says a lot.

Well, if that's the case, let's thank Brad Treliving for being such a massive jerk GM that finally substantive changes can be made.
I can to an extent sympathise with Marner. He was overpraised and overvalued by his previous employer, so actually being treated appropriately by his new one could feel like being "disrespected and undervalued" when it really isnt.

Would your boss give you a raise again if they gave you a big one before and got the same results from you as before?

My company always gets the same effort from me. My last "big" raise was well over $30 and now they get the same effort and results as they did before. We had a recent company wide wage freeze, my company made an exception for me, I still got a cost of living wage increase, my company does not F around when it comes to my wages. So the answer to your question is clearly yes.

What my boss also knows is if I go to a competitor, I give the competitor a competitive advantage over my current company plus he has to replace my value. So lose lose for them. The reality is not everyone is treated the same when it comes to wages, some people are sheep and accept whatever their company tells them they are worth, others know their value, have respect for themselves and demand to be paid what they feel is fair for their needs. For example, a buddy of mine was making mid 60's, he had a chance to go elsewhere, for more money, I asked do you want to go elsewhere, he said no he likes his company but the money is so much better elsewhere, it's hard to say no. I told him to go back to his boss say exactly what I told him to say... he is now making low $100k's, he remained with the same company and got some new perks. Companies don't give money away unless they have to, I'm glad Mitch is not being a sheep.

I want to know what kind of compromising pictures you have of your boss……..lol

Examine this play, and ask yourself, how this effects Marners linemates? Marner is 6' closer to the puck than McCavoy...but Marner just lets him have it and Boston easily clears the zone.

How can anyone not think that this wouldnt prevent Matthews from producing in the playoffs?

Look at Marners playoff shot locations....

Now compare Marners shot locations to Rantanen, who makes 1.8 million less than Marner:

Matthews is effectively playing 5v4 when Marner is on the icr because Marner just hangs out on the perimeter.

Watch the playoffs, the games are being won in the slot, not by wingers standing on the perimeter.

We took Florida to game 7, if we had Marchand why couldn't we have beat Florida? He just scored a beauty against EDM to start game 5, what a player!

I also wouldn't be so sure he wouldn't want to play here, has he come out and said that?
I just don’t get it. Tre saying the “DNA” of the team needs to change. If your best and highest paid players, Matthews and Nylander, don’t have it, who could be brought in that would change their DNA? I think your top players need to have it, and then you bring in other players who also have it.
And Matthews throwing his teammates under the bus after the series was over, and of course not including himself, I just don’t see why the team would want to follow him after that.

LOL ... no pictures, as long as you make him look like a superstar and make your boss's life easy, you can, with in reason, demand your price. I do that so for now they keep me, when I stop being an asset, I lose my leverage. Everyday is an interview for your own job.

I think what Tre is saying is we have too many players like other players. For all of them, when it comes down to clutch time, Rielly, Mitch, JT, Willie, Matty, the guys who should matter in big games disappear. Guys like Marchand, Bennet might have less skill and talent but tend to relish big games. So with the core on our teams we get the high high's and the low low's but with other players they get the mediums all the time, consistency is key.

I've been saying for a while now, a team is a sum of it's parts, we've been far too much focused on individual skill. We have 3 players better than any one player on the Panthers, the Oil have two players better than any one player on the Panthers but the Panthers play as one cohesive unit, they come in waves and everyone regardless if you score or not, you have a role and you are expected to execute that role better than the guy on the other side of the ice.

The Panthers drag you down, target individuals that might be difference makers, they pound the will out of them and then they force you to play their less skilled game. Game 3 in our series, the Panthers knew they were going to lose the game so they did what Champions do, they look long term - what do they need to do in game 3 to win the series? They proceeded to forget about the puck and pounded, and pounded and pounded the will out of the Leafs in the 2nd period of game 3. What did the Leafs do? Got fustraded when the Panthers started to take cheap shots thought the refs were not calling the game fairly, got in their own heads, forgot their purpose and panicked, coughed the puck up, did not protect the puck, made quick pointless reckless passes to no one, lost their focus and then the Panthers pounced and won that game. Just like we lost the series in game 3, the Oil lost this series in Game 2.

We are still the only team that took the Panthers to game 7, the team is not far away as some fans might think but we do need a DNA change to get there.
