Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

To be fair to Treliving, the Gaudreau situation was completely on management. Then the Tkachuk situation was mostly because of the Gaudreau one.

The Marner situation is mostly on Shanahan. Once the NMC was in place, there’s very little that could have been done.
The amount of excuses made for this guy is staggering - the buck stops with the GM, and he's the one who has now lost 3 superstar players. Let's stop sugarcoating this: we know he had autonomy to make moves.

The buck stopped at Shanny. Tre was not allowed to trade Marner when he got here and his NMC kicked in a month later. Tre shopped both Nylander and Marner but could not get a deal done. Tre is not stupid. I think he realizes what Dubas figured out before he left that the 3 amigos do not hate losing enough and are not willing to play outside their comfort zones.

I don't know how exactly you guys create these fallacies in your head, but there's absolutely nothing to suggest that he wasn't allowed to trade off the core - mainly because he tried to trade the core (Nylander) as soon as he got here.

Him not being able to get a deal done, is on him. Not on Shanahan.

And if he realized the 3 amigos don't hate losing enough, then he should have reacted to that information rather than trying to extend Marner lol.

Mirtle identified Chicago, San Jose, Utah, and Anaheim as the likeliest destinations that will throw the most money towards Marner. It is very possible that, should Marner choose one of the aforementioned teams, he will become the highest paid player in the NHL, surpassing Leon Draisaitl's $14 million AAV.

Agreed - Its the final year of his contract. Its not like it was year 2 of an 8 year contract.

Leafs reportedly gave him their best offer

Marner didnt like the Leafs best offer and reportedly wouldn't negotiate.

.... then why not allow the team to move-on?

Its obvious...because he wants to do the same thing he did last contract. Make the leafs as uncomfortable as possible to get the very best deal he possibly can get.

- His and his wife families are from T.O
- he has his charity here that employs his entire family
- he has a restaurant here he started with O'Leary
- he has endorsement deals here, he wont get elsewhere
- the 8th year he can only get here
- 13.5 million i assume only a few teams will offer.
- he loses his legacy in Toronto, jersey hanging, possible statue...etc
- He is insulated by Matthews and Nylander here.

Gonna be hard to find better than he was offered here!

Let him walk Brad!!!
Apparantly Ana is prepared to offer more than 14 so who knows?

This clown can't leave soo enough. Won't miss him one bit and don't care if they do not make the playoffs and lose to Florida in round 1 or 2. Matthews would be next to go if he does not step up and lead by example.
Offered11 million? Oh last deal, still may not get that this deal. Lol

Marner affirmation often comes when things aren’t going well and he needs to be boosted in confidence, so you fundamentally misunderstand why people around the Leafs have to always pat him on the head. “Marner is so talent, Marner is so special” as a preamble and then people get around to the actual point.
You're the only one that fundamentally misunderstands why and when people praise Marner, to the point that you're creating conspiracy theories out of nothing to sustain your narrative. Marner being an amazing player is the actual point, and praise comes from all sorts of people - both with and without incentive to see him do well - and through all sorts of situations - good, bad, and everything in between. Even when there's no more hockey to even be played. In fact, if there's any time it happens the most, it's in response to people spreading falsehoods about him, much like you are now.

Back to the original point, Treliving and Berube explicitly said they wanted to re-sign Marner. You were wrong.
As far as your Treliving criticism is concerned, again a load of nothing.
No, it's valid criticism. He fumbled this badly.
Lost in all this Marner acrimony, how about Marner take some responsibility things getting to this stage?
Marner has played a part, but he's not the one to blame for where we are. Marner's primary responsibility is to do what's best for him and his family. It is the responsibility of the GM to do what's best for the team, and ensure things don't get to this stage, and Treliving has failed.

Treliving is doing what’s best for the team. No raise for Mitch

AI's assessment of why signing him might not be great:

Mitch Marner's Major Criticisms - The Unvarnished Truth

Oh boy, you want the full roast? Here we go:

The Playoff Disappearing Act

This is the big one - Marner has a reputation for going completely invisible when the games matter most. In crucial playoff moments, especially against teams like Boston, he's been criticized for playing scared, making soft plays, and failing to step up when the Leafs need their star players most. The contrast between his regular season dominance and playoff struggles is stark.

The Contract Situation

That $10.9 million AAV is constantly scrutinized. Critics argue he's overpaid for someone who can't deliver in the playoffs. The whole contract negotiation was messy, and many feel he held the team hostage to get paid like a true superstar without proving he can perform like one when it counts.

Soft Play Under Pressure

He gets criticized for being too perimeter-focused and avoiding physical confrontation. When teams get aggressive with him in the playoffs, he's been accused of shrinking rather than fighting through it. The "soft" label follows him constantly.

Turnovers at Crucial Moments

His fancy plays that work in the regular season often become costly turnovers in tight playoff games. Critics say he tries to be too cute instead of making the simple, smart play when the pressure is on.

Leadership Questions

Despite being one of the highest-paid players, there are questions about whether he's actually a leader or just a talented passenger. Some critics argue he doesn't have the killer instinct or mental toughness to be "the guy" for a championship team.

Falicy? It is well known Shanny called the core after Dubas was fired and told them they were not being traded.

Tre was looking to trade Nylander two summer's ago for a top dman. Could not, so he looked at his options and decided signing him was his best option. Unfortunately he caved and overpaid.

Tried to trade Marner to Vegas this past summer but Vegas hung up the phone when he asked for Theodore.
Asked Marner to waive but Marner refused.

I do not fault Tre much in all of this. Shanny is the common denominator who deserved all the blame and he paid for it with his head.

I never realized you were a we can and we will supporter. It won’t work.
I'm a supporter of what's best for the team. The cap structure has already worked, and the upcoming cap increases make it even more viable.
Giving him 13M-14M is not what's best for the team.
Yes it is. Much better than the alternatives.

Moving off a team where 4 guys make half the cap, is best for the team

July 1st 2025 should be viewed as Freedom Day as Leafs move from 4 X players > 1/2 your entire Cap and locking Leafs into Salary Cap Hell. :madfire: and doomed to fail.

The road to recovery begins when 2 of Leafs worst contracts end and the road to the Stanley Cup begins in reality when the Leafs change their DNA and round out a deep competitive team.

"Good-bye, Mitch".

Getting rid of someone who contributes on nearly 40% of the points is going to be rough. Hopefully Matty doesn't turn into a 40 goal scorer.
