Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Bennett is no Clarkson, come on now, not even close... even Devils fans were like, "WTF?" when we signed Clarktard to that contract. Dude owes Patrik Elias half his money...

OT: Also, Elias is one of the most underrated players of all time, in my opinion. He's the Devils' all-time leader in points, goals, and assists, and is top 50 all-time in game-winning goals... just a smart player. I guess his numbers aren't super flashy, but you have to keep in mind he was playing during the trap era. For example, Elias led the Devils in scoring with only 57 points in 2002-03, yet the Devils dominated and won their third cup in eight years.

Other people in this thread are, that’s who I was responding to. I thought we’d moved past Dave Nonis stupidity, apparently not.
I'd rather give $10 million to Bennett than $13 plus million to Marner...I'm not saying to flat out give $10 million to Bennett...it was a comparison about their relative impact to playoff success...but if we're simply comparing impact in playoffs, then Bennett would be a bargain compared to Marner.

I didn't compare Bennett to Clarkson, I compared giving Bennett $10m/yr to Clarkson's contract here. It would be a nightmare overpay.

For those pushing the "Bennett three years of Finals" trope, he finished 7th in Panther playoff scoring last year and fourth in Panther scoring in 2023. To date he's won zero Conn Smythes. He's having his John Druce year this season, and some of you chucklef*cks want to hand him $70m. Of course none of you would admit any guilt when three years from now he's taken us to zero Finals because his salary's chewing up 10% of the cap for Cole Perfetti level point production. I'll have to sift through hundreds of pages of "Tre needs to be fired–what was our management thinking."

Recent Poll suggest majority of Leaf fans want to see Marner go.

Results From Recent Poll Have Leafs Fans Largely United on What the Summer Plan Should Be

It was just one of the questions asked in the Toronto Sun's annual poll on the direction of the team, but it was the one where most agreed on the answer.

Just under 65 percent of those who responded said it was time to cut Marner loose.

"What best describes your feelings about Mitch Marner's future?

A breakup is required. He should not be retained. (64.48%, 374 votes)
Try to keep him. The core is on the cusp of breaking through. (35.52%, 206 votes)"

As for other free agents, the vast majority of respondents want to keep John Tavares (77 percent), but they want him to take a discount on his next deal, and agree it shouldn't be any longer than three years.

I have flipped. He has to stay. Other than Cowan we have no ability to develop. We have no draft choices, after our last few trades our ability to make trades or signings has to be questioned.
Run it back again. Keep the band together, new tour...let's go baby.
MLSE has the bucks, citizens can pay, bars can over charge...Rogers has the rights, ...yeah...Go Leafs!
There is no way Mitchy can be replaced.
Sarcasm?

Why, why yes, or course... because Clarkson has the exact same playoff pedigree that Bennett has.

He probably didn't realize that over the course of the last 4 years that only 4 players in the NHL playoffs have scored more goals than Sam Bennett as he is tied for 5th with Nate MacKinnon with 27 each.

While in 44 playoff games David Clarkson posted 4 goals 9 assists for 14 points in his career. So the caparison to Sam Bennett seems a tad off.

Not so fun fact.

You know if you added Matthews and Marner's playoff goals together last 4 years in 74 games you would have 21 goals total and not match the 27 of Sam Bennett.

So you can see how some Leafs fans seeing what they current have would be willing to let Marner walk, and sign Sam Bennett as a replacement for even less money that it would take to re-sign Mitch. :teach2:

13.5x8
Vs
14 x 7
????

California has high taxes, not much different than Toronto.

Just to match Toronto, Anaheim would need to offer 7x14.4 million.

This doesn't take into account:
- Marner reportedly gets 2 million annually in endorsements deals in Toronto
- Marners Charity in Toronto has grown substantially per records and its a tax write off benefit
- Marners charity also employs his Dad, Mom, Brother and Wife
- Marner gets heavily front loaded Toronto contracts which he can put into savings accounts and make money

... it makes very little sense that Marner doesn't care about that 8th year. He will be 35 years old at the end of 7 years. He could be looking at a minimum contract at that time.

What does make sense is that he doesn't care about the 8th year..because he doesn't want a long term contract.

His rfi deal he held out because he wanted a short term deal like Auston's.

People really think this time around he doesn't want the same short term deal as Auston again?

I'm confident it will come out that its what he is after or was after (why he and Tree didn't agree during the season).
Fully expecting him to ink a 3 year deal. Then he waits for Matthews to sign first, and reset the market, perfect time for Marner to sign his 8 year deal and show his loyalty and commitment to his team…all while getting paid max dollar for ages 30-38. Won’t have to take a pay cut in his mid 30’s like Tavares. When he officially leaves in July, I’m having a tomahawk steak to celebrate.

Yes, clearly dropping the team from around 10th in GF to around 20th or 25th in hopes that we'll improve our PLAYOFF offense is the greatest plan ever! Then when we miss the playoffs because we can't score enough goals to win games, we can have discussions about which of our new shing playoff scorers are getting traded for scraps...

The "$10M for Bennett" was from another thread, which asked you to pick between Bennett at $10M or Marner at $10.9M.

Both numbers are ridiculous - a fair question would be closer to Bennett at $8M vs Marner at $13.

Despite how skewed the numbers were, Bennett got almost as many votes as Marner ('neither' got the most).

I can't wait until this loser is gone.

There is zero to like about Marner. He's a whiny snotty crybaby who thinks he's better than everyone else. Posterity will not be kind to this young man.

At some point in the future Leafs historians will conduct their research on what went wrong with this core.

Possibly including by coming onto this very site. Their findings will be a master class on how to turn a fan base against you. Greed, lack of accountability, and a trope of idiot supporters.

The only ones defending him anymore are family, personal acquiantances, and the stubbornly ignorant.

Anyone still supporting this clown is a fan of the player more than the Leafs. Hopefully they all follow Marner to his new team. The less pollution of the fan base by their toxicity the better.

Once the trash is gone the stink will eventually fade.

No Historians.

AI will be on it. It's going to cite the writings of Povsky, White and Wave etc. as having been correct in their assesments, although some formulating their conclusions earlier than others.

We will be considered hockey oracles and gurus. That's right next to hockey gods btw.
