Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

But we don’t want him.

I want him to stay on my terms. I think my terms would be universally well liked around the fanbase.

Mitch Marner
8x 11m-13m / No NMC / Limited OK

This gives the player the best deal for a player of his size and speed to make money. It gives the team a trade option for a return that can help us.

Now do playoffs....
In the playoffs he underperforms, so that’s why he should sign an overtly team friendly contract if he stays.

Some people might think he sucks so bad in the playoffs that you simply can’t win a cup with him. I wouldn’t agree though. Get him for cheap and use the cap to help build a winner. Use all the players properly.

Marner should be a second pairing defenseman. He's not a top pairing dman but he's a valuable piece in a properly structured defense.
No GM is paying a second paring dman what Marner thinks he is worth. This guy did not take Leafs offer of almost 50% more money than what Makar is making. Let that sink in.

At this point, I would not even make him a lowball offer because he will refuse it and we need to change the DNA.

Lol

Marchand wasnt coming to Toronto. Hell.. Why would Perry with our whiny 'leaders'

Perry is smarter than that

I don't think the open market is going to give him what he wants and he may come down to be earth. He had to be humbled.

I am happy to sign him to a team friendly deal or even compromise and give him a last shot. The NMC is off the table though.

The only contract I would sign Marner to, is one that is part of a Sign & Trade that sees him departing before the ink on the contract has a chance to dry.

Marner has 13 total playoff goals after 9 playoff seasons.. Even if a team was bringing him in as secondary/depth scoring ONLY, they would be bitterly disappointed with those results. His next contract is going to be among the WORST return on investment you will find.

I know but the best way to change the DNA is to have players we can get a solid return for. He gets you assets
I get it but ship has sailed. You might be stuck with him or have to sweeten or retain to trade him if you overpay him. Sign and trade is still in play but the book is all but closed on Marner returning.

Season's over for you Mitch.

What's stopping you from negotiating now. No more playoffs that need your undivided attention. Well... not any games you'll be playing in.

So why aren't you trying to get something done.

After the way you were telling everyone how much you wanted to be here signing a new deal should be your number one priority. Waiting until July 1st tells the entire world what you don't have the courage to come right out and say. You're a gutless and nutless puke through and through.

Nobody wants you here anymore anyway.

You burned your bridges with a fan base that was willing to anoint you the golden child. Through your disappearing acts every spring along with a stubborn refusal to accept personal accountability. I can't wait until your greedy playoffs no show penalty box crybaby win nothing loser ass is gone.

I'm not in the minority feeling that way either.

Whenever I watch highlights back... Marner is always making mistakes or stands out as not engaging. Even more so than I see in real time.

Watching game 7 back and Marner tries a cute touch play in his own zone that ends up on Fla stick for a scoring chance.

Later he tries to get in front of point shot, gets super skinny apparently in an attempt to block the shot, and after the shot misses him...he let's himself keep drifting turns and looks at the net...instead of turning immediately to be part of a potential next play. This is why Marner is called one and done alot. If you watch him, when he makes a pass, he stands still and watches, instead of skating into the slot for a possible rebound.

Later, the Fla Panthers score game 1 vs Toronto. Marner had stopped backchecking... and the 2 vs 1 occurs a Leaf coach sees it materializing and Screams...Marner puts his head down and stares but its too late.

He's just an incredible flawed and overrated player.

I dont care what the price is... dont bring him back.

Said it for months but the idiots running the candy store ignored all logic and offered him $108m. Absolutely f***ing clueless and they learned nothing from the Nylander deal. They continue to bet on the same 3 losers but Marner won't allow it. Thank the Gods.
I heard on either a radio show or podcast that he was never given a written offer. Maybe there were some discussions but thankfully it never got serious enough to start putting it on paper.

They’re probably two or three yrs away from a complete overhaul and he would have been a huge hurdle to overcome.

2yrs. All the Goalies and Tanev, AM etc. It was a now or never year for this core.

For example: Look at how useless Marner is when Knies gets the puck along the boards in game 6.

Instead of attacking the slot and going to the net, Marner tries to get higher than Knies.

Knies goes to the net with the puck.

Look at uselss Marner - standing straight up and not even putting any effort into getting to the slot. Only option for Knies is Matthews, surrounded by Fla players. Marner is not an option whatsoever.

Contrast that to Fla, who had two swarming the net with urgency at every opportunity.

What if he doesn't want to sign a team friendly deal?

Correct. Sign Marchand and move on.

Will ‘let that sink in’ be the new idiotic catch phrase of the summer? There’s something to look forward to.
I guess if it replaces ‘bingo card’ we can consider that a win.
