I can really see Vegas signing MM as it fits both of them.

Vegas gets a playmaker for Eichel. MM plays on a team where he is in the Beta or even Charlie role despite his contract amount.

I don't think anyone can be certain which way this will go so question for those who think it could go either way - what are the odds he's a Leaf when the season starts?

I ask because I made a bet on it today with a friend. Not a lot of money, just a fun bet and I'm curious as to what people think.

I'd say it's about a 10% chance he returns.

I think if he came back for 9-10 million, fans could somehow accept that as it would leave us some money for an upgrade. I don't think he'd accept that amount, and I'm not even sure he'd want to be here regardless.

That would pretty much be the apex of cowardice on Mitch's part and would completely validate absolutely everything the anti-Marner posters have been parroting for years. I don't expect it to happen. Marner is not a better goal scorer and that is factual. He accumulates a lot of secondary assists but thats primarily because he is playing with high end scorers.

Person wise, come on. You havent watched enough interviews between them both to see which one you would prefer in a locker room?

Well ofc he’d like to go there or Vegas - two teams at which he can be that #4-5 guy that he actually is. Would be very surprised to see any of them wanting him though. Sabres, Chicago, Anaheim, Nashville etc I could see.

This makes the most sense to me. No sane contender will sign him to more than Rantanen money just by virtue of the fact that Rantanen is playing like a Hart candidate on a contending team for $12M AAV.

BUT - bubble teams that are looking to finally make a splash in the playoffs will be happy to overpay by $3M in cap money per year at a chance to improve the team in the short term and recoup that money in playoff revenue. It'd also generate a lot of splash for the organisation to land the most coveted UFA.

Utah makes the most sense in terms of being able to absorb Marner at $14M while still having money leftover to give Cooley and Doan sizeable raises. Chicago and Anaheim have over $100M in capspace next season and could throw $15M at Marner if they wanted to lol. So it's up to where Marner wants to go. If he wants to contend though, I'm highly skeptical that any of these three teams will be Cup contenders for the bulk of the 7 years if they throw $14M+ at him.

It's also pure, unadulterated greed. Like it's totally within Marner's remit to go get what's his - but it's also totally fair to call him out on putting his own personal well-being above the team's.

If there was no salary cap or a luxury taxed based system, I don't think anyone would really care if he was haggling over $12M vs. $14M and just focus on his on ice suitability.

It was reported last week on the Fan 590 morning show by the hosts and then Seravalli. Starting to believe he does not want to be in Toronto because he feels he gets most of the blame for their playoff failures. If he and Matthews were not so unlikeable, maybe the fans cut them some slack. Not breaking them up in the playoffs showed me the tail is wagging the dog and he needs to go.
