Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

It’s just time. He opens up so much space to bring on UFAs and Toronto always gets a shot at the best options.

I love Marner but feel like moving him will elevate the team to a new level, with more balance and not so much money spent on wingers.
I'm ready for the next chapter lol
But the bigger virus is and always be MLSE.

Id extend him to willys number .thats it
But lets face it
He cantposdibly get morre than rantanen
In no world is that right
I hope some team gives him 15 million
They can find out what leafs fan knew since the montreal meltdown
Without the Leafs bidding it up, I doubt he gets anywhere near what he thinks he will get. The media circus of how valuable he is to the team will not be very loud and they won't be putting pressure on the team to sign him...ergo....he will have to deal with the rest of the teams in a normal market. That means he won't get the Toronto Tax that he would have otherwise. I can't see any team saying they think he is worth more than Mikko except for a bottom feeder like Chicago or SJ. The rest of the league knows what's going on...

TheWave senior said they played worse than a bunch of juniors and ripped Marner fierce. Love my Dad.
I think i could introduce some of my cousins from overseas who dont even know ice hockey is a sport and show that play and they would think why did #16 give up an own goal

That play was so bad it makes me question if marner bet money on the outcome.

Marner is just a thinner version of Kyle Wellwood.

Tired of his disappearing act.. but at least we know where he gets the nickname "magic" Mitch from.

Get lost you bum.

I showed my sister one powerplay, she doesn't watch hockey.

first question. why are they wasting time on the back pass.

2nd question. why don't they shoot.

Literally torture.

If we do a major retool this year and let 16 and 91 walk

Force matthews to get surgery for whatever he says is hurting him

Trade Reilly for Fiala to get another skilled player who can run the PP with 88 and is making sub 8M, then sign a guy like Provorov or Ekblad

Add 3 top 9 guys with strong shooting and puck protection skills, they can be 4-5M players each but guys who can outproduce their expected bulls hit stats

I said it earlier. 4 Nations looked good because he was the 5th 6th 7th best player on the team and was insulated by 87, 97, 29 Stone and other guys that brought veteran leadership. He didn’t have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Come back to Toronto you’re not insulated by anyone. You are the guy you are the leader and everything goes thru you.

He still has an opportunity but Florida is so deep in his head right now I don’t think he can get out of it.
Well, part of the problem, besides his mental block issue, is that they never gave the core anybody that they could learn from. They had Patty Cakes (Never won a cup), Spezza (Never won a cup), Jumbo Joe (Never won a cup) JT (only went to the 2nd rd 1x nevermind winning a cup, as his mentors.

Dubas and Lou just assumed they would figure it out...and they couldn't. They could have signed Justin Williams instead of Patty...now that is a guy you learn from...Mr.Game 7

Maybe Justin Williams didn’t want to come here?

I listened to Brandon Montour on Nick Alberta’s podcast, I’m sure there are players who are dying to come here but not a lot are tbh. Go listen to Montours interview, they asked him how close he was to signing. His answer is telling, a lot of players want no part of this market for different reasons. Some do, those are the players we have to go out and find, the ones who want to embrace being in this market.

Yeah, most players want to live in America. Even the Canadian players sigh. Even beyond the whole Toronto pressure thing.

ROR never called out the culture. ROR didn’t like that the organization/coaching staff didn’t make adjustments after going down 2-0 to Florida. He was clear about that in the interviews he did.

The other reason he chose Nashville is because his brother Cal convinced him to go there. Nothing to do with Marner or Matthews really.

Ah my bad.

I forgotten between the players and coaching staff/GM who was called out.

All I remember was I wanted Keefe gone ASAP. How did we give Keefe another year????

I think they probably didn’t like who was available to be hired that year honestly. I forget who was available but I don’t think many great coaches were at that time. So keefe was probably the best option at that time.

And I think the players would be included in not making adjustments. He didn’t name any players or a specific coach (Keefe) he just said they felt the organization didn’t adjust after going down 2-0, so it’s hard to know exactly who he was talking about specifically.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've read "you can't let talent like that walk". I can't help but wonder what all those people are thinking today?

It’s such a glib and empty statement. You look at the defending cup champion Panthers up close and they’re a team of skilled players who make simple, efficient plays. Who cares when Marner is trying to C cut his way across the blueline and then wrists one to nowhere? He’s got an over abundance of skill that doesn’t get used when other skilled players are playing for keeps.

It could be the case that Williams didn't want to come here. But, I doubt a guy who is called Mr.Game 7 would be that afraid of the pressure in TO. If I recall correctly...Lou had the choice between Williams and Marleau and picked the wrong guy IMO because they were both UFA's but Babcock was infatuated with Marleau.

Marner's 82 game and 100+ point regular season helped secure 1st place and home ice advantage for the Leafs.
&
Marner's play and performance in game #5 yesterday washed it all away in a single game.

A good indication how much weight should be placed on regular season play, when numbers are all reset and the real season begins.

After the game, the comments coming from the players were all in unison as they were hoping to look past the loss and as Mitch Marner said "flush it down the toilet". Unfortunately it's not that easy in a city that demands a whole lot more than what they received last night. The lack of accountability was staggering and left fans irate.

Flushing it down the toilet will be easier said than done because now the Leafs have to take down the Panthers on Friday night in Florida to force a Game 7. Considering their lack of success in elimination games over the years, it's high-time they finally showed up for once -- especially if your name is Mitch Marner.

You really have to wonder how many other teams GM's are scouting the Leafs and in particular a pending UFA like Marner and thinking..

"I really have to have that guy, and willing to pay him $14 mil making him one of the highest paid players in the game".

All eyes are watching including Leafs own GM,

Maybe Marner put it best yesterday as to what is happening to his next contract asking price.

But what is talent? I posted this a week or two, here it is again:

“Yes, talent matters. I’m not going to stand here and tell you it doesn’t. But talent has a broad definition. Most of the time, it’s not about having a gift. It’s about having grit. In tennis, a great forehand with sick racquet head speed can be called a talent. But in tennis... like in life... discipline is also a talent. And so is patience. Trusting yourself is a talent. Embracing the process, loving the process, is a talent. Managing your life, managing yourself... these can be talents, too. Some people are born with them. Everybody has to work at them.”

Lol, Dubas would have traded Nylander
Wasn't it the rumour that Dubas was trying all season to get Karlsson from SJ? I bet he would have traded Willy to get him here because he would have been a UFA the next summer and had no trade protection. Supposedly Shanny blocked him from doing that one...Hence the power play for autonomy after Shanny said Dubas was wanted to resume his duties with a new deal.

From what I remember, he was shiftier and more elusive when he was younger.

Obviously he's never been big or strong physically. I remember him being feistier, though. He went up against Chara in 2018 and didn't shy away.

Now he's hard to watch with the puck on his stick. He doesn't skate that well or fast. He takes these sloppy strides. Of course, he doesn't exactly excel when the play gets physical. He pretty much just throws the puck away when pressured instead of making plays under pressure now.

If you remember Ovechkin when he was younger, he was marvelous with the puck. But he changed his game when his skating and puck handling abilities declined, retaining his goal scoring and physicality. Players can lose certain abilities over time. Marner seems to be an opportunistic playmaker rather than an offensive driver nowadays.
He's got more money now...gotta stay safe and sound during hockey games in order to spend all that money relaxing and golfing off-ice.

I've said it many times - hard to believe any GM for a contender would be dumb enough to think Marner's worth top dollar. Some team that has no hope of playoff success that needs to sell tickets, that's another story and Marner might have to be willing to go to the equivalent of bumf*** NHL to get the contract he needs to feed his ego.

yeah, dream on. He said specifically "there are 2 players on the Leafs who will never win a Stanley Cup." Don't torture the obvious. That quote is a very very damning take. Let's just own up to it.
