Apparently on July 2nd he gets his bonus and then makes $750K next season. He will need to go to another team and lead them into the playoffs before he folds but he could command $12 Million for say 5 to 6 years on the open market..not with Toronto, its over.
It will most likely be a team that can make the playoffs without him. If he agrees and the deal is good, we can even retain 4 mil for 1 year to get it done.

Leafs vs Tampa 2022: Game 7, Marners playoff perimeter play on display. Tampa has puck, Marner backchecking skates beside him (keeping distance) until leafs defender takes the man..Marner skates around defensive zone, Tampa player takes puck hard to net...Marner reaches weakly and its in back of net. Marners Selke defensive skills on display:

Marner crappy play #7 2024 playoffs vs Boston:
No need to give play by play,, this one is still fresh:

So yea... thats already at least 7, all in must wins. What could 11 million in salary space, and not having a player making these critical errors meant to this team? Not to mention the black hole hes been on offense, playing 10' further from the net than in season and having the worst slot shots among the team and 10% worse than the next leaf.

If you watch back all the series... you will find that Marner is behind many if not most of the backbreaking goals against. Ridiculous delay of game penalties, risky flip pass hail Mary that is intercepted, failed clears, giveaway on a attempted deke, the panther pass to matthews inside his own blueline, the Pastrnak one... I can name at least 7 backbreaking giveaways that led to gwg against in critical games. That's pretty incredible.

Never understood why Marner gets nominated for Selke.

Even if you look at Leafs PK% regular season or playoffs, they arent even that good the past 5 years.

say he leaves as a ufa. Where would he sign?

Working all weekend thinking where he could go to pass the time.

funny thing is.

Boston actually seems like they could be a fit.
ullmark. Carlo/lohrei 1st. That’s low. But he might sign there.

Tampa: for Hagel or cirelli could work.
Lose the trade but 6 mill in cap and get term.

IMO it raises questions about where is all the money going that is raised. Again, I have no idea about the structure of the foundation, but it causes me to wonder how much is being taken out to support the family.
Foundations that are started by athletes are a great way for them to "employ" many people and reduce their tax rates.

Good read:

Athlete charities often lack standards

Yup, as always, the rich get tax breaks and everyone else gets looked at with a fine toothed comb. I'm wondering who Tavares pissed off.

The ones that kill me are the ones whose mission is “raising awareness”. Why do you need millions to raise awareness for something when you have massive social media reach and can mention it on prime time TV 3 games a week for free?

Pretty sure when Red Bull or whatever the sponsor drink of the week is wants to “raise awareness” for their brand, they make you wear a hat in the postgame where millions will see it instead of whatever these foundations are doing to raise awareness on a fully comped golf course vacation for a “team” of 5 family members.

This company sounds and behaves like it was formed by his buddies who can get paid by Marner while providing “security” LMAO!

No other respectable company would harm its brand like this on social media.

Imagine the scrutiny NBA, NFL and MLB players get in markets like NY, Chicago and LA.

NHL players wants to get paid big time $$$ and also don’t want any attention or scrutiny for their lousy play and don’t want to be bothered by fans on the streets. Soft as shit.

What about Marner for Konecny? Same age, both have a year left on their contract. From the leafs perspective, he's not as good as Marner but he's a good player who's more physical than Marner and he'll be making 6 mil less next year and probably 2 to 3 mil less after their new deals. From the Flyers perspective, cap space doesn't matter as much to them right now and Marner makes them a better team during the regular season and more likely to make the playoffs.
Ha Philly would eat Marner alive. No way he'd accept a trade there

If you watched McDavids performance last night, is an insult to the sport that this dude makes only 1.6 mil less then he does

If you make over 10 I expect you to take and dominate not just be an above average defender that can make good passes sometimes

You can say that about all of the Leafs overpriced forwards.

I just have the feeling that it will be MM for Seth Jones with retention or prospects and draft picks.

Just make sense on many fronts.
I would rather they keep Jones and just take Marner for picks. We don't need another overpaid...over rated player even if he is a defenseman.

We need to restock the pool with more top end prospects and then use the money for UFAs.
A 2 year plan to retool. Marner this year, JT next. 22 million. If we get good young players we can add them in a 2 seasons with Knies, (already here) Cowan, Minten and the UFAs.

Or depending on the team we can get 2/3 solid mid level guys and still go UFA route for what we need.

Drafting is the only way to go. We overpay our own players never mind how much we would overpay a UFA. My belief a true quality player never makes it to UFA. They would come with issues. Why would any club not extend their warrior, surely they couldn’t have 3 or more preferred so called all or nothing 110% guys.

Sure:

2021 vs Montreal, Game 6: Penalty kill, Marner has all the time in the world to clear the puck and he instead decides to go fancy and flip it out of play and get a delay of game penalty. Montreal scored on the subsequent 2 man advantage.

Leafs vs Montreal: Game 7, Marner tries to pull a deke at the offensive bleulin4 and Montreal steals for odd man rush going the other way and scores:

wow. the montreal loss was the most devastating for this core. and to see marner be responsible for many bad plays in the elimination games of that series is... yikes.
