I've spent all summer reading how good these kids are...

And you guys think they sign for less that $7 long term?!?!

If Matthews scores another 40 there is about a 0 chance of him getting less then $10.

Can he be extended right now?

July 1st, 2018, Nylander can be now though

It's not crazy to think they (Marner, Nylander) get less than $7M, there's precedent - Gaudreau @$6.75, Drouin @$5.5, Monahan @$6.5, Forsberg @$6

Agree that Matthews will be in the $10M range because of McDavid and likely Eichel, but Barkov only got $5.9M and Scheifele $6.125M too so the Eichel/Matthews level could get a long way off of McDavid's $12.5M mark

Do you think Marner makes it to his next contract? I'm concerned about his size

I'm not sure what you're referring to...

I want to see JVR or Leivo with Kadri.
I wouldn't hate having 3 scoring lines.

Kadri had 32 goals.. Connor Brown had 20 and played a lot with Kadri.

We have 3 scoring lines.

Marleau-Matthews-Nylander
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Brown-Kadri-Hyman
Komarov-Moore-Kapanen

That's how I see it.

I think one of the lines needs to be able to match up against the other team's top line when we have last change. JVR is definitely not a good choice for that. Leivo might be - he's been a very good possession player to this point in his NHL career, but his foot speed isn't excellent so the other winger would need to be able to be the chase guy on dump ins and to be able to cover in transition. I think Brown can fill those shoes, but I guess we'd have to tinker

I'd like to see both Kapanen and Leivo get real looks in the top 9 this year though, we need to deal someone

Kapanen has no business on the 4th line.
Send him down and use him for emergency call ups.
Move Hyman to 4th line, and Leivo to 3rd.

Rest of it is spot on.
We don't need to get rid of anyone for the sake of getting rid of them. DEPTH IS GREAT!

Tnx. There should be a thread about Nylander's contract more so than Marner's....

Of Toronto's big 3, if I were their agent, I would say that Mathews should be the only one to sign an extension after his 2nd full NHL season.

Nylander and Marner likely would be better off playing the 3rd year of their ELC. Likely to put themselves into a better financial position if they have 3 years to base their contract numbers off of.

Mathews, because of his position as a 1C, he has more leverage than wingers would.

Majority of the top young players play out their 3rd year, like McKinnon, Jones, Monahan, Lindholm, Risto, etc.

I'd like to introduce you to the Pittsburgh Penguins. You may have heard of them.

Who is the Penguin's third guy making north of 8?

Pittsburgh Penguins 2017-2018 Salary Cap
Player (19) Pos. Base Salary
Evgeni Malkin C $9,500,000
Sidney Crosby C $10,900,000
Kris Letang D $7,250,000
Philip Kessel RW $7,000,000

Plus, the Leafs are paying some of Kessel's.

Leaf fans say he is a franchise player. He's getting at least $7.5 and with salaries going up he is probably getting more as a franchise player. There really aren't any franchise players who have signed for less than $7.5 million in the last year or two that I can think of.

Matthews: 8yrs x 11M

Leafs will pay a little extra to get the full 8 years

Marner: 7 yrs x 9M

Already better than Gaudreau, Marner will get serious money

Gaudreau had a 78 point season and is 3 years older so more years bought of UFA. No way Marner gets 9m.. He'll get in the 7 range unless 80+ point season.

Whatever Draisaitl gets Marners going to get. I'm going to guess if Matthews gets above 9.5, marner signs for 8*8.

Forgive me, i didnt think that there was a huge difference between paying someone north of 8, and 7.2 - Semantics, but i suppose you are correct.

Though, if we're talking semantics, you said 'making' which would mean salary, so... :sarcasm:

Kessel's is 8, but yes, the Leafs are paying 1.2 of that.

Gaudreau's 6yr deal bought just one year of UFA. He reportedly wanted an AAV of 7M+ for the full 8 years.

Since Marner is apparently the third or fourth coming, a 70+ point season by him and a 7yr+ deal could easily reach the 9M range.

The McDavid and soon Draisaitl, Eichel, Johansen contracts have changed the landscape. Leafs fans best get on board.
