I’m even angrier about the delay penalty now than I was last night

His over complication of simplicity can be forgiven

But his continued unwillingness to pay the price to make the correct play cannot

It was the latest in a long line of gutless plays made by a guy wearing a letter and unless he completely turns things around and leads this team to at least the semis, he needs to GTFO

I agree this is what will happen, but even if he goes off for a natural hat trick in the first period, I don't know if it wipes the slate clean.
It's a start. They have to change the narrative and have put themselves in the worse place to do it with their own stupidity

That’s exactly it, he doesn’t want to take a hit to make the right play so he just rushes the play and puck over glass. Is that sound like someone worthy of a letter on their chest?

All the guy has done this series is slowly and lazily carry the puck into the zone and get his passes intercepted or straight up turns the puck over.

Not once has he gone into a dirty area to try to retrieve the puck. He’s thrown a couple of hits but with no intent behind them.

To me he’s clearly content with trying to make his same “skill” plays, and if they don’t work it’s no problem for him.

He’s not a leader on this team. He doesn’t drive success. He’s the ultimate passenger. Imagine being his teammate and watching him phone it in all series. How inspirational can it be to watch this guy float around out there and then be expected to go out and battle your next shift? You see it with successful teams - their stars are leading the charge in every area of the ice. We simply don’t have that drive on our team. You can’t have Spezza playing on the 4th line giving it all he has and expect to win.

the thing about the playoffs is teams specifically game plan around taking away obvious plays, like Marner passing to Matthews. It's up to Marner to either find other ways to contribute or find ways to beat Montreal's strategy, but he's unable to do so. As long as he's completely useless at finishing plays, he'll never be a good playoff performer

If I’m Kerfe and grow fortitude after they lose tomorrow, I strip Marner of the A and consider Matthews and Reilly As as well. A clear, strong message must be sent. I then give two (not 3) As to Brodie and one of Hyman or Muzz. Those 3 are the only ones deserving of a letter IMO.

I know they likely won’t care, but as a fan of a storied franchise, seeing some legends dinning letters, and then you see these 3 non competitive pansies? It’s sickening

That’s exactly why Thornton has never done well in the playoffs either. If you only have one threat, it’s easy to game plan for you.

There have been plenty of pass first players with weak-ish shots who have done well in the playoffs.

Marner has no desire to pay the price and sacrifice the body in the playoffs. Kid looked like he was daydreaming about seadooing at the summer lake house last night.

My problem with Marner is not necessarily his lack of production, it's his engagement.

It's one thing to be dangerous in all situations but not finish because a goalie commits grand larceny, or your teammates don't capitalize on great set ups you make.

But every playoffs this guy disappears. This is what you get from a soft player that completely turtles as soon as there is any physicality.

Hes been good on PK, but hes not getting paid for being good on the PK. Zero goals in last 17 playoff games is completely unacceptable and I want him traded if we lost tomorrow. Marner + for Eichel.

Because on the PK nobody is looking at checking the forwards. It's easy to chase the puck and intercept passes.

Take Kane for instance. Not a physical player but plays physically in that he drives the net and skates through danger areas. He uses his puck handling skills and skating ability to deke through big guys.

Eventually you get a reputation and players just try to box you out and not take the body because they don't want to end up on a highlight reel. This is what you want from Marner. Nobody is saying go out and deliver checks. But you have to be unafraid to get pummelled.

Impossible to win otherwise.

Marner deserves lots of criticism but the idea that play had anything to do with "hearing footsteps" or being gutless is pure idiocy.

If he was scared to take a hit why didn't he just immediately clear the puck down the ice? No one was near him, if he did that he wouldn't have got hit at all. Why stand there and stick handle for a couple seconds and then flip as a small hit is coming?

It's a bad play, it's a dumb play - overcomplicating an easy clear by going for a soft lob into a dead spot to maybe kill an extra second or 2, but it has nothing to do with being scared.

my take on Marner:

- Top 5-10 in the NHL in terms of pure talent; these playoffs don't change that
- doesn't play a physical game at all and this does not translate well into the playoffs
- the lack of physical game is probably a non-issue if he was able to bury pucks at clutch time in the same way as in the regular season
- in theory, as he ages and matures, he could become a potent playoff performer but it's far from guaranteed seeing as how it's already year 5.
- a big game tomorrow would shut up a ton of critics and anything short of that is probably (close to) the end of his 'untouchable' status in Toronto
- this would be far less of an issue if he were making Sebastian Aho money

Agreed, it's his usual creative instead of smart play, but not fear based

Talented player, likeable guy. Really nice to have in the regular season but he isn't built for the playoffs.. more often than not he's a liability.

That combined with how much he's being paid, he absolutely has been a disappointment and an issue.
