Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Continued

What I want to know from fans is, what do we need to see from both the team and Marner to want to bring him back?
In my eyes it’s simple

A deep run (CF min) and Marner dominating. I won’t say the exact ppg because we never know what numbers look like, so instead a top 5ish ppg in the playoffs.

Otherwise IMO, we should walk away. No need to run it back with the core. Moving nylander and Matthews is near impossible for a retool, so it’s Marner and Tavares left.

Exactly. How much more is he really gonna command if he carries the Leafs to the ECF? He ain't getting 15 or 16 million. So may as well wait. The price tag is not going up that much.

But doesn't this get back to the old argument about whether the club needs three elite forwards at all? Two has been the max for almost all Cup winners since the 80s Oilers. The Leafs formula isn't a proven one and hasn't worked so far. They don't need to run Mitch-Willie-Austin or Ranta-Willie-Austin, it just looks so good on paper they keep doing it.

They could have been in the running for Bennett and Reinhart but they have been trying to live out Kyle's wet dream for the last 5 years instead. They can win without any one of the big 3 but having had them we are conditioned to the idea that losing one inevitably makes them worse. If you believe that have Mitch is fundamental to the club having a shot at a Cup I probably can't change that but there is nothing really to support that the 3 musketeers are required to compete other than a bunch of strong regular seasons that have led to nothing. In spite of the treading water I'm not saying give up on it, but getting murdered on every negotiation hasn't worked out so far.

I think the old argument about 3 elite forwards had it wrong.

If Matthews, Nylander and Marner were Mackinnon, Draisaitl, Kucherov, you could definitely make that level of forward star power work.

The problem is they aren’t hitting those levels and especially not in the playoffs. It was a superficial projection from early days but we’ve learned a lot about them over the years.

That quote is a prime example of why so much of this fan base can’t stand the guy and is more than willing to drive him to the airport when his contract is up, despite his elite talent. The man can’t even admit when the team played like garbage and had a poor effort level. He always goes into defence mode if he feels the heat, even if what he says flies in the face of reality.

Like for Christ’s sake how hard is it to say what Tanev said tonight? “Not good enough, need to be better.” Simple, easy, validates the fans who watched, and he doesn’t come off as a brat.

It’d be less of an issue if he and this team had more than one bloody playoff series win to their name, but in the wake of their constant failures his attitude is even more grating.

We know MM is bad at interviews but this quote is by far the worst of all.

How can you even say that when you get shut out in HNIC at home.

Just said, We need to focus on the next one. And move on.

You look at what Tanev said and what he said. It seemed like they played in completely different games.

Marner's mouth is the gift that keeps on giving.

Once again the first shot of the game went in. All the high priced talent up front couldn't score a single goal. Outhit, outworked, outplayed, and outscored on home ice by a tired Canucks team on the second game of back to back's.

But Marner thinks they played great.

This is what a loser mentality sounds like. Teflon Marmer at his best. When they win he's more than happy to include himself as a key part of that success.

But when they lose it can't possibly have anything to do with him.

There is no honour in this. Marner might just be the most entitled mouthpiece to ever play for the Leafs. The team needs a culture change and the best way to accomplish that is by not bringing this loser back.

The last thing they need is Marner brainwashing the rest of the locker room even more into believing losing is ok and not their fault.

Split marner and matthews up
All night marner looked for matthews
Couple of times he could have shot but he tried that extra pass to matthews
Matthews did not engage once with his body. Everything was stick checks. I’m sure he is still hurt. Get him off the ice
And let him heal if possible. But no he will play his shitty game so he can participate in the 4 nations.

Leafs should shut him down but he is the star and they wouldn’t want to upset him. He runs this team and management. Wants marner on his line check
Wants captain check
Playing injured so he can play in a useless tournament check

The inmates run the asylum. Shanahan is a moron and needs to go with Mitch at seasons end

Time to show the results in the playoffs Mitch. Hopefully no contract before.

Bet any money if we exit early his camp will say it's because the added pressure of not having the contact done.

Were we watching the same game? Matthews was playing with McMann and Nylander, not Marner. How could Marner have been looking for Matthews all night?

EDIT* they got split up in the third!

It’s a really bad quote and no one can defend that.

People need to realize Marner is doing what probably a sports psychologist has coached him to do. Look for the positives in everything. Matthews quotes about the PP were similar, we had lots of movement but nothing fell for us, the power play has stunk up the joint all year. The leafs leg has given these guys a script on how to answer the media and it’s horrible. I don’t think Marner is brainwashing the locker room as much as the organization has already pushed these types of narratives to the players in an attempt to help them cope with the failures of the past. But it’s just so far from reality.

I have no doubt it's the organization or, more likely, his agent telling him what to say.

But my guess is they are instructing him to say these things in order to deflect blame. Marner is easily the most thin-skinned individual on the team and they probably think this will protect his fragile ego. Everyone else has accepted accountability and at some point said something along the lines of "I need to play better" but him.

There's no way he can be that tone deaf without someone whispering in his ear that it's not his fault.

He should hide in the back of the room with Nylander after a lost.

The Leafs really need to ban this kid from making any comments to the media. Lol.

True, but prior to that they were giving up chances and the goalies were bailing them out.

He should hide in the back of the room with Nylander after a lost.
Yes he should. He lacks awareness and it would serve everyone’s best interest if he did.

Look how pissed off the fans are over his comments after a loss in January. Now fast forward to May and imagine how toxic will they be if he gets his $13m and they lose in round #1. I'm talking to you, Mr. "we are not here to sell jerseys".

That's not true...
Barkov, Tkachuk, Reinhart.
Mackinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog.
Kucherov, Point, Stamkos.
Ovechkin, Backstrom, Kuznetsov.
Crosby, Malkin, Kessel.
Kane, Toews, Hossa.
Etc.
