More important than the goal, he cleared the puck four times that shift prior. Just saying.
Did not watch the game. I just don't like him @ $13+m. Sorry for me you got to be a 35+ goal scorer minimum to get that kind of money, let alone from a team with two other players making top dollar. I hated Willie @ 11.5 but at least he can score 40+, 50+ if he did not take too many games off.

Sorry to report Marner up to 4th in league scoring now. Damn.
He was very good on the PK and with empty net.

A mix of everything you get with Marner.

- An even strength goals driven by his linemates. Another point from the blueline.

- A PP point from the blueline.

- An empty net goal from his zone.

- Him stopping up on a forecheck on the PK because he wouldve been hit.

- The broadcast I was watching had the camera on him on the bench for an extended time and Marner was visibly pouting. The broadcast team speculated he was mad about a potential high stick but it looked like he was talking to one of his players on the bench (looked like he said "what were you doing?")

- Him pouting in the 3rd about something, even when he scored the empty net goal, he still was shaking his head and pouting.

- On Tampas 3rd goal instead of playing through to the end, he apparently thought there was an illegal play and he raised his hand to alert the refs. The puck ends up in the leaf net and he goes to the ref after the goal, however, no challenge by leafs.

I hear you there! The internal cap structure is what it is. I just see the cap hit as doable given the projected rise. Anyways, he was brilliant both ends tonight.

Dude was an absolute stud today. Controlled the game every period every shift. Just brilliant

I'm fine at 13 if he can produce I'm the playoffs. If it's another dud we gotta do something else unfortunately

He is an amazing player but IMO $12.5mx8 is fair and I'd give it to him today if he'd take it. Otherwise, I wait until after the playoffs and tell him to show me you are worth $13+m.

If I am Marner, I would take $12.5m rather than putting the extra pressure to perform in the playoffs to get every penny.

Yeah, if in fact there is that deal being pushed out, I wish he'd take it.

Or if the cap rises to $95+m. I really do not like the idea of 3 guys who have led us to one series win in 8 years making all the money while valuable players like McMann and Benoit who play hard every shift make 10% or less.

Rumour is Leafs have set their ceiling at $13m. They could be waiting for the league to announce what the cap will be next year. Marner won't be doing himself any favours if it appears he is greedy. Nylander was but he has managed to duck it so far, partly because he outperformed his last contact after 1-2 years into it.

Whether its 12M or 13M it doesn't really matter that much, it's allocating 1% of our resources to retain a superstar.

The important decision is breaking the core or not, and that's really more of a team driven decision than a Marner one.

We're a few months away from collecting critical information on that front. It's prudent to wait for it and use it imo.

Marner was good on PK and with ent empty, but still dont think he pulls nearly his weight 5v5. Once again his one 5v5 assist was primarily driven by his linemates:

Matthews draws 3 Tampa players and somehow still passes to Marner who literally is given a wide open pass lane to Knies. No sticks in the lane (or on the ice) this is a pass 90% NHL players can make. It's no coincidence that Marner had 6 5v5 points in 14 games when Matthews was injured and has 8 in 9 games since Matthews came back. Matthews is a top 3 NHL player and possibly the top 5v5 player in the league.

Saving 500K per amigo is close to the difference between signing Domi or a Bertuzzi or DeBrusk or keeping Hyman or potentially Stolarz.

Then you have to wait, not give him a NMC or be prepared to force somebody to waive their NMC. Not signing Tavares or signing him at a discount is not a core change that will make any difference.

Thanks for that great, telling picture. I didn't realize just how sublime that pass was to Knies.

Yea wouldve liked to keep Bertuzzi. He has 17 goals for Chicago already. Last playoffs, Marchand was doing his typical Marchand things vs us...until Bertuzzi and Domi showed him that they werent going to stand for it. They put an end to it by targetting him with dirty hits and after whistle confrontations.. Wiped that smile off Marchands face around game 3 and injured him too somewhere in that series.

Yeah but retaining or not retaining a 67p/48g player takes priority. Poor Dubie got swindled and that's sunk damage - we pay a Dubie tax now that has to be navigated.

If the core meets a certain end this year the enviroment will change and folks might waive, but circumstanially its most likely Marner is involved. That would subtract a lot of entertainment and carry risk but sometimes that's the way she has to go.

Yep, a pretty straightforward NHL pass. Playmaker extraordinaire Jake McCabe made a more challenging pass the other day, picture below. He knocked this clearing attempt out of mid air and sent a cross ice pass in a split second.

The real work on the Knies goal today, was by Knies, and Matthews

Matthews has been driving 90% of his lines goals since he got back.
