I can’t believe they are even talking about an extension. Only a Stanley Cup final should warrant continuing the Team A and Team B strategy. Unless he would be willing to take a serious paycut.
It's the Leafs. Have not had a sniff of the ECF in decades let alone SCF and no cup in over two generations. Why would we expect anything else but incompetence?

Spoiler alert. Marner isn't taking a haircut. He's probably asking Matthews money. That's 50% more than Reinhart who signed end of June. I'd honestly tell Ferris to GTFH and take his playoff dud with him.

It doesn’t sound like he’s asking for Matthews money. It just sounds like he’s not interested in negotiating right now. Don’t think this is a money thing. It’s everything a lot of you have been wanting and asking for.. him deciding he’s going to wait and see how things play out. I think a lot of people have forgotten it’s a negotiation, takes too sides. The leafs clearly want him, maybe he’s ready to leave at the end of the year.

I do love the reaction, we are mad at him for saying he wants to wait, when this whole thread has been preaching the leafs should wait.

Really? Seems kind of naïve not to believe they would discuss a contract with one of their top players.

If that is what he said, why would I be mad at him? God Bless him. He's doing the opposite of Willie who fleeced them last January. If I were mad, it would be with the dummies who do not want to wait and learned nothing from negotiating with now 11.5m PPG Nylander.

Oh and if he’s ready to leave at the end of the year, I'll gladly drive him to the airport unless Antropovsky beats me to it.

According to a new report, the Toronto Maple Leafs recently extended an offer to Mitch Marner on a new contract that was shot down quickly by his camp.

In the midst of what has been a great season so far for him personally, and a great one for the team as a whole, there's still a big question mark hanging over the head of Mitch Marner regarding his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On a recent episode of the JD Bunkis podcast, host JD Bunkis said the Maple Leafs recently made Marner an offer that was shot down by his camp.

"My understanding of what has happened with Marner is that, actually now, they have tried to extend him a number, and he's the one, and his camp are the ones, that are actually saying 'yeah, we're actually going to wait on this thing and see how it goes. We might want to be the ones that hit free agency.'"

Best news I have heard all day. If true it sure fly’s in the face of the narrative that he loves being a leaf and wants to remain a Leaf

Lmfao you can’t be serious, this is the most hypocritical post ever. If Marner comes out and says he’s willing to sign the deal, you guys would be on him and shitting on both him and the team for signing before the playoffs.

Now he’s saying he wants to keep his options open after the media and fans shit on him every April for the last 4 years, he’s the bad guy and the narrative of him wanting to be here is a lie. lol it’s pretty asinine. Pick a side, what do you want?

I said it in the thread earlier, if I’m Marner it makes zero sense to sign now. If he has an outstanding playoffs and they win, he has leverage, if he has an outstanding playoffs and the leafs lose, he has leverage, if they lose and he sucks, he can walk and start fresh somewhere else and so can the team.

Also keeping your options open doesn’t mean you’re not enjoying where you are. At the end of the day it’s a business. We also don’t even know if this is true. It’s freaking JD Bunkis reporting this lmao

Yeah, I’m pretty sceptical of that rumour. For a number of reasons, I don’t think it would be very good strategy by either side to leak out what’s going on in the negotiations.

Both sides can wait all they want nothing is going to change, Marner is what he is a 30 goal-100 point season player. Sure he is playing a little better than that at the moment but it’s a long season and stats seem to balance out over time.

I’d rather see Marner walk than overpay to keep him. He was overpaid before but is worth his deal now. Time to give us a fair deal or move on.

It’s not hypocritical. On one hand I’m glad that Marner seems to want to wait because I don’t think leafs brass have to balls to wait. On the other hand I still think the narrative that he wants to remain a leaf but is considering free agency shows it’s all about the money.
Both things can be true at that same time.

If this is true, how come the real insiders haven't said anything about it? JD is a radio host, he hasn't broken anything ever, he isn't connected, so this on its own frankly means nothing. Where is the corroboration from other sources? Not saying it isn't true, but seems odd he's the only one mentioning it, and he did it in passing too.

Last time he wanted to stay they threatened with 2 offers sheets. You can't be pissed at him if he signs in the regular season. You could be pissed at the Leafs for not waiting if it was a bad cap hit.

Really, Daddy makes his decision, he can drive Mitchy, Mrs Mitchy and the dog to the airport. I will arrange the fans to stand on the 427 overpass singing Good Bye Mitchy,

If we win the cup I reserve the right to change my position.

Not sure why you think that. I would blame the Leafs for not waiting and/or overpaying him. I would only blame Mitch if he takes Tre to the woodshed like Nylander did and then is ass in the playoffs.

Interestingly, LeBrun "actual insider" was on TSN yesterday discussing the JT deal, and said not much is happening because both sides are waiting to see what will happen with the salary cap, will it go up more than previously thought. This is the exact same logic that probably permeates the Marner negotiations as well.

`I think Jt’s deal gets more expensive as time goes by. I use to think 6 would be a fair deal, now it’s looking like 8 and if he plays better still it will only go up.

To be honest I did hear something along those lines recently, and if Marner does leave it’s because of Paul. I try not to put too much stock into it because everyone talks, Paul talks to a lot of people so who knows what’s true and what’s made up BS at the end of the day. And if what I heard Paul is trying to convince Mitch to do happens, leafs fans will probably be pissed, because he ain’t leaving for more money, I’ll put it that way. I think a lot of fans on here think it’s about money, everything I’ve heard suggests it’s not about money. The money is here for Mitch if he wants it. I think it’s more about other things beyond money now. Which is why we may be seeing the wait and see approach from his camp.

Whatever number I think someone should be signed for, I've learned to add about 20% more to it. Not just for Leaf players, that's league wide with the exception of Florida teams.

In my opinion that 20% would be the UFA rate. We do extend our players as if they were UFA’s, so maybe I should abide by your opinion and just add 20%

Kind of suggests that the Leafs will still over pay for both these players. Just depends how much of the pie lol.
