So let's do that going forward and hope it continues into the PO. Nobody cares if they are wrong when the wins are rolling in.
It looked like Marner had a good game but I won't celebrate until someone tells me his icf, xicf, iscf, ihdxf, ihdcf, xgf, lgbtq rate compared to Nylander.

I get the apprehension about this not being the playoffs, but, you do still need great play from your stars in reg season to make it to the playoffs, too; especially missing some key players for a fairly long stretch. As has been said -- there's nothing wrong with appreciating what we have seen the last little while. All our core players (that are left) have stepped up bigtime during this stretch.

I get the playoff thing somewhat. We have seen tons of regular season success and little playoff success.
But it’s pointless to say let’s see it in the playoffs when that just isn’t possible right now.
Marner has been playing fantastic ever since Matthews went down. Hopefully the two are kept on separate lines when Matthews returns. McMann - Tavares - Marner has been really good and Marner always got Tavares to elevate his game.

Exactly. It's a given, it's baked in, it's forever true, he and they will be judged on the playoffs. So, let's just assume this self evident truth. Then what? You either don't watch, OR you take what you see now, and are encouraged. I see a little more maturity, a little more careful with the puck, a little more board, dirty area, effectiveness. I see a guy excelling when the Captain is out, when the forwards are dropping like flies, I see leadership. That's objectively good, with the caveat being the self evident truth that stooge nation doesn't have to repeat because it's a self evident truth.
Dude is a monster right now. Unreal to see every night.
I am/was a Marner skeptic, but I've been uber impressed with his play without Matthews. When Matthews comes back, let Marner drive his own line through the playoffs. I'd be happy to pay him at that point.

I'm as frustrated as many with the playoffs but it's obvious they're re-signing Marner. I don't think they ever tried to trade him. Berube wanted him this season and Berube will want him next season.
Coincidence that Marner is playing like this without Matthews?

Another beautiful game by Marner. Marner is now up to a 109 point pace, and has had a multi-point game in 7 out of the 8 games without Matthews.
Been great to see him take over when the team needs him.
And quickly... No, this is not the first year that we've been a top defensive team. Also, a reminder that Dubas upgraded our D with a top pairing defenseman in his first year. Also, a reminder that we were organizationally weak at center, and Tavares money came from departing forwards. Also, a reminder that Treliving took over one of the best teams in the league, and a good defensive team, and had an abundance of cap space (including a bigger cap increase last offseason than Dubas' entire tenure) and is still working to match it. Let's just be happy that he's doing better than last year. Hopefully his next step is signing Marner ASAP.

You're confusing defense and goaltending. You're looking at the wrong stat. We were poor defensively in the early Matthews era. We improved to one of the better defensive teams in the league under Dubas, for the first time in decades. Treliving came in, made a bunch of poor defensive decisions, and our defensive results tanked last year. This year, he's put it back to what we had. Also, the way you posted even the wrong stat is so misleading. Treliving would be the worst at 3.04, but you've attempted to attribute last year to the wrong GM, in a way that you didn't do for the previous GM switch.

1- Goaltending is a part of the defensive group. Like i said, Dubas took the decision
2- Still had the same goalie as #1 for 3 years. ok last one he was injured in the last one but that season Campbell had been amaizing.
The difference between 2018 when Dubas step in and 2023 when Treliving step in. Dubas had all cap space of the world and asset to change the D

Treliving had limited cap space (especially in a pretty bad D ufa market) and extremely limited in asset to make any change with the D.
The difference between Dubas/Tre... Dubas saw all money available, lost his mind and his goal to upgrade the D and shoot it on long term contract to upgrade an offensive who didn't needed help especially at C at this time

Treliving saw the money available and didn't like option in market, he gave up 1 year deal to foward who was best optioj on market and kept cap space for next summer. Treliving did what Dubas should had done 5 year sooner. So it was basically Dubas D last season minus Holl.
The decision gets tougher. He has been terrific this season and especially in the last few weeks.
But still only 10 th in scoring.

Oh I Agee they both go down to the summer but it won’t have anything to do with the playoffs. They will see other offers before deciding how much of a haircut they will take to stay.

Remember the BlackHawks and their 3 Cups with Toews and Kane? The reason that dynasty broke up was due to cap constraints as a function of big contracts delivered to their forward stars.
The Leafs have the same issues but not even a 3rd Round of hockey over 9 years. The fanbase would love to have had just one Cup for all the big contracts.
Toews and company won multiple Cups. He had a Conn Smythe season. Leafs have jokes for their fans to be hit by while the players and ownership make bank.
Playoff success or walk. That's the mantra for this team. If the owners do otherwise, you can be sure this team will remain without a Cup for the lengths of these contracts.
I stated very early in this process that this team had the feeling of a San Jose or even the Oilers of more than a decade ago. They would have plenty of talent but little playoff success. It has been more accurate a fear than I thought possible.

Goaltending is not defense. Goaltending is goaltending. It is a different position entirely. Treliving has had more cap space and just as many assets. The difference?
Instead of taking over a bad defensive team and making it good, he took over a good defensive team and made it bad. Instead of spending his forward budget on a 1C and his defensive budget on a top pairing defenseman to fill organizational weaknesses, he spent his budgets on overpaying poor mid-tier player choices, chasing unnecessary snot, and wasting a prime year. Thank god he's been able to pivot and fix some of what he screwed up. Next task is making sure to not screw up the Marner signing, and get him locked up ASAP, as losing him would be a much more significant mistake.

I get your thought, and I was in favour of letting Marner walk and using his dollars to make us better. But cap is going up, and dang, he is playing so good. Makes it so difficult to decide.
