But we all know that ultimately it’s whether you win or lose. So even though these advanced metrics or whatever you call them might say the Leafs, overall, dominated, bottom line is for the 5th straight year we went out in the 1st round.

So it's good we get the reason's correct for why it happened. I like to look at the winners like Tampa to see how they turned around an embarrassing first round sweep to two straight cups with the same core and same coach.

Having the best goaltending (which we've never had in all 5 series) and having the right depth pieces is the glaring difference so far.

Do you feel like we will now have the best goaltending in the up coming playoffs…..
According to some we already had the right depth pieces because the story we are continually told is that the Leafs dominated last year but simply got out played in net

I'm not sure. Both knocks on Campbell and Mrazek is that they are really good is shorter bursts but can't handle the heavier loads in a season and suffer from both injury and inconsistency when pushed too hard. It's why trying them out as a tandem and if one falters, throw the other one in (like the Islanders for example) looks like a decent strat. Will it work? I dunno.

Not all of us are blessed like Tampa to have a goalie that can carry the playoffs for you. It's why Tampa can close out the quarters, semi and finals with 3 wins and score only 4 goals while we score 6 and lose all three of our last games despite us carrying the play compared to the Bolts. Elite goalies like that dont grow on trees.

The silver lining on all this when it comes to a guy like Marner in all of this is that his underlying numbers are not just good, they are elite.....like in the top players in the playoffs over the last 3 years elite. He has a tendency to go a little too "try-hard" sometimes and those flip over the glass penalties (we've never given up a goal on any penalties he's taken in his career though) give people the excuse they need to trash him as he's not scoring the lights out....but even there, McDavid captained a team that got swept and he only had 4 points in the series. If you matched his points production from the regular season against his totals in the playoffs, he had 5.08 points/60 in the regular season and only 1.97/60 in the playoffs. Is McDavid a choker? Did he forget how to play hockey?......or was goaltending/depth the big factor in the series? The best player in the world has one playoff win in the last half decade but he's still the best player. Crosby, Malkin, Daisatl, McDavid, Marner, Matthews all got stuffed in the first round on better teams that lost for this reason. Thats probably 4 of the 5 best players on the planet. It's a team game.

not everybody is telling that story.

For me, Matthews Marner Tavares scoring only 1 goal is what doomed us, no matter how well they may have played otherwise.

Yes, but the point is we didn't lose because we were "manhandled" or because we "didn't compete".
That’s why there’s two sides to every coin. Some people see things through their Dubas-coloured glasses, while the rest of us see things as they really are.

But it’s funny how we haven’t had the better goalie, and believe me I’m no fan of Andersen, in 5 straight 1st round exits. You would think this amazing core we have could hide that fact for at least one series win. And it’s hard to build a decent supporting cast when you have to shop in the bargain bin because half your cap is tied up in 2 centers and 2 wingers.

Yes, there are two sides. On one side, we have your eye test, and on the other side, we have my eye test and every single possible metric and measure countering your eye test and supporting mine. I think it's pretty clear how things, as you (quite rudely) put it, "really are".

Just keep drinking the kool-aid Dekes. And as long as those metrics keep showing how great our Leafs are, it doesn’t matter if we never get out of the 1st round, right?

This is the most accurate post I have read in weeks

If he played the way he did last night in the playoffs, we would have had a much more enjoyable summer.

I noticed he played with a huge a chip on his shoulder last night, especially for a preseason game. Hopefully he can maintain that moving forward.

Of course it matters. That's why recognizing and understanding what actually happened is so important.
I’m glad we agree on something.
Look, Dekes, believe it or not you and I have the same interest. We desperately want to see the Leafs win.
I would be the first to admit I’m way too negative, I see the glass half empty. And I dwell way too much on the past.
I’m not really looking forward to the regular season, because for me, it’s what happens in the playoffs. After what happened this past season, for me, it’s hard to get excited.
I’m really hoping Dubas and the team prove me wrong.

The supporting cast produced excellently.

All we need is to go back to having a bubble team that's life and death to make the playoffs every year so you can enjoy watching the regular season again.

Playoffs:

Price vs Matthews/Marner/Tavares: .982sv%
Price vs Everyone Else: .917sv%

Who knows, maybe they could do what this team hasn’t been able to do, actually win a round.

So the core should be changed, then?

They certainly failed.

Personally, I'd bet on them eventually scoring in the playoffs like they do in the regular season - hopefully they're still with us when it inevitably happens.

That’s the problem. How many kicks at the can should they get?

I guess Keefe should have adjusted the amount of ice time he was giving certain players.

Ding ding ding. Ever since Keefe has been coach, Marner has shown him something important - He can't score against a "hot" goalie in the playoffs. Playoff after playoff Marner can't put the puck in the net and playoff after playoff Keefe gives him top minutes. I get it, this is one of the main guys who brought you here but at some point you have to say enough is enough and take control of the situation. The fact that Keefe not once split up Mitch and Matthews told me the guy was in over his head.

You like how the second line is playing? Ok mix and match the first and third line. Just do something else. There were two players who scored more than 1 goal in the series. Nylander who scored 5 had an average ice time of 18:20 (would have been close to 17 if people didn't grill him for his questionable ice distribution). Spezza who had 3 goals averaged 11:43. Marner averaged 24:43. Marner is the second best player on the team but it just wasn't working. As a coach it's your job to assess the situation and reassess your gameplan if it isn't working. Keefe can't do that in the playoffs.

Personally I'm not trading them away at 23.
I can see your point. For me, it’s just concerning how few draft picks we have as of now, and really, nothing to show for it. I will be the first to come crawling back on my hands and knees if Dubas is able to take this team to at least the 3rd round, with this core and their cap hit.
