Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

On one of the more recent Leafs report pods, Mirtle said he doesn't think a deal gets done until July. Said the team has 'tried to get it done' but things were ' at an impass ', he seemed to suggest that the player's camp was looking to readjust due to likely rising cap. And that JT was in a similar situation of no deal yet.

Definitely a bit of speculation on his part but.thought it was interesting nonetheless

Now that the salary cap is going up so quickly the more important question about Marner is not just his contract demands but can the team win with this core group ? The answer for me is no they can’t but short of trading him which isn’t happening, they definitely need to wait until after the playoffs before making a decision on signing him or not. And then even if they win a round, I wouldn’t sign him to more than a three or four year deal to keep the cost down and maintain some flexibility to build a deeper team. Anything short of a conference final should result in breaking up this core group.

People expect too much from marner in the playoffs.

In the past 5 playoffs:
He's still 3rd. on the team in P/PG, .89
Only 18% pf his points in the last 5 playoffs are goals, so if the overall goals scoring is reduced, his points total will be reduced.
His main linemate has scored 13 goals over that period of time, .37 goals per game, whereas Matthews scores .73 goals per game in the regular season past 5 years.

Not sure why the focus should be on marner, when his linemate drops off so dramatically in the post season?
When Matthews goes from .73 G/PG to .37 G/PG the source of points just isn't there.

Regular season same period, he get 31% of his points from goals, 69% of his points are assists.

For me his linemate should be the one to focus on as, over the past 5 playoffs, he's dropped to 2nd. in goals for the team.
The problem with all that is Matthews has a contract and Marner doesn’t. That part of the decision was already made.

Thinking about Marner helps calm me down (takes my mind off Trump trying to make Canada the 51st state).
I am the opposite. I was think if US is the 13th province. The Hockey Team would be stacked like we never seen before, lol.

Imagine the 4C of McD, Mack, AM and Eichel
With Makar and Hughes in the back

Hey now - according to @Dekes For Days Marners assists are as important as goals, or even more so! That’s why Bäckström was the real star on the Capitals, and why we’re not interested in Ovie chase for the record in goals

Wasn’t Nylander (and Elias Pettersson , lol) top 5 in scoring g last year at some point? Fully expect you had the same thoughts back then in that case!
Yeah I remember how Oates was continually reviled, and how people wanted Gretxkys 212 thrown out as a record because it was merely 92 goals and how LeaFlanders screamed for the head of Killer and called him a fraud because he managed only 32 goalss in his 127pt season, what a poofter they said an absolute gagging poofter!

Shall I go on?

I don't remember any of this. Can you provide some sources, quotes, anything at all to back this up because it sure sounds like a bunch of made up nonsense.

I am interested in the Ovi record chase. I would like to see him break it. I also wouldn't mind seeing someone break an assist record - even the 100 assists was worth watching and an amzing milestone.
Which you probably know is Gretzkys 163, although the NHL is looking to delegitimize it because you know "assists!"

You’re remembering some really weird stuff I see. You’re ok there?

I have a feeling it's one of those moves... Hes great but...

We need our Hockey Kawhi

What people fail to realize is that Marner is the Kawhi for someone else. Marner is the Tkachuk for someone else. I don’t think it’s impossible to grab someone who can make us better but we kind of missed that boat through trade. Maybe Rantanen ends up in UFA. But I think we missed out on that Werenski + for Marner opportunity a few years ago. Or maybe we could have done Tkachuk for Marner a couple years ago and passed.

You guys sure love your rage bait Marner contract talk tweets eh? 😂. Dopamine action.

It’s actually insane how one tweet can spark that much rage lmao.

Marner's definitely walking to free agency, reading between the lines it seems like his team wants to really maximize the benefits of the cap rising. Any perceived discount has a less than 1% chance of happening at this point.

Possible 2 year bridge on the table.

I’ve been on this train too. I think Marner is going to at least see what’s on the market. I don’t believe he cares for the 8 year thing and the longer this goes it makes me think he’s walking. He might pull a Stamkos, see what’s out there and come back or maybe he signs elsewhere. There’s only so much a person can take in a market and I get the argument that he loves it here. He grew up here, but so did Hyman. Hyman literally forced a trade to the Leafs out of college. But when the money calls the money calls. I don’t think it’s solely even about the money. I think at the end of the day he’s going to realize he can go elsewhere and be happier and not have the weight of the world placed on his shoulders. It might even help his production. Playing for the leafs is a great honour and I know it means a lot. But, it’s also a massive pain in the ass and I wouldn’t blame him ultimately if he decided to walk into a diff situation.

I guess you're unaware that unlike Marner, Kawhi was a proven playoff performer before he got traded here. As a matter of fact he already had playoff MVP on his resume, unlike Marner who's production takes a massive dip in the playoffs.

You'd be closer to the truth if you said that Marner was the opposite of Kawhi.

I guess you missed it but just a few weeks ago, Marner said that he was treated like a god in Toronto. Doesn't sound like someone with "the weight of the world on his shoulders" to me.

Should pull a move like Colorado did swapping Rantanen for Necas. Knowing the leafs though we'll keep the core group together for another shot next year and talk about growth and how the bounces just didnt go our way. Marner will sign for something like 13 x 8 and we will repeat the same thing for the foreseeable future. The best indicator for future action is past action.
