Same answer. I love Marner. I'd still let him walk for nothing before signing a $13-$14M - 8 year contract. They have other needs with that kind of money. The makeup of this team just isn't right.

On one of the more recent Leafs report pods, Mirtle said he doesn't think a deal gets done until July. Said the team has 'tried to get it done' but things were ' at an impass ', he seemed to suggest that the player's camp was looking to readjust due to likely rising cap. And that JT was in a similar situation of no deal yet.

Definitely a bit of speculation on his part but.thought it was interesting nonetheless

Now that the salary cap is going up so quickly the more important question about Marner is not just his contract demands but can the team win with this core group ? The answer for me is no they can’t but short of trading him which isn’t happening, they definitely need to wait until after the playoffs before making a decision on signing him or not. And then even if they win a round, I wouldn’t sign him to more than a three or four year deal to keep the cost down and maintain some flexibility to build a deeper team. Anything short of a conference final should result in breaking up this core group.

People expect too much from marner in the playoffs.

In the past 5 playoffs:
He's still 3rd. on the team in P/PG, .89
Only 18% pf his points in the last 5 playoffs are goals, so if the overall goals scoring is reduced, his points total will be reduced.
His main linemate has scored 13 goals over that period of time, .37 goals per game, whereas Matthews scores .73 goals per game in the regular season past 5 years.

Not sure why the focus should be on marner, when his linemate drops off so dramatically in the post season?
When Matthews goes from .73 G/PG to .37 G/PG the source of points just isn't there.

Regular season same period, he get 31% of his points from goals, 69% of his points are assists.

For me his linemate should be the one to focus on as, over the past 5 playoffs, he's dropped to 2nd. in goals for the team.
The problem with all that is Matthews has a contract and Marner doesn’t. That part of the decision was already made.
