He's be 35 years old when his contract expires. Why would Calgary even WANT to re-sign him?

They’re basically stuck in between a rock & a hard place with their roster. Everything about it screams rebuild but then they have the fresh Kadri, Huberdeau, & Weegar long term deals. Backlund can still play even he isn’t what he used to be so if you’re goal is to be competitive you can probably do worse.

Calgary would be in a good place right now if they read the writing on the wall, with Gaudreau and Tkachuk, and started the rebuild last summer. You don’t replace players of that caliber, and they got older and worse in the attempt. Don’t need hindsight for that one. I don’t even know where they start now. I do find it funny how everyone who has been in Calgary bolts, while Huberdeau signed for 8 years without playing a game.

Just remember what an absolute disastrous state Dubas left the Leafs……as Good Hockey Guy Treliving comes in to save the day.

The thing is though, those three might be highly paid but they aren't going to keep them from being one of the worst teams in the West if they go ahead and trade all of their other valuable pieces. It would obviously be much better to move them for assets to accelerate a rebuild, but even with them they'll be Bottom 10 next season if they move out everyone else.

I don’t disagree, it makes really no sense. I’m not even agreeing with it. But I’d imagine ownership might not sign off on a full on rebuild given those contracts.

OMFG

THE FLYERS LEGEND WINS IT FOR THE BEARS IN OT

THE BEARS HAVE WON A CALDER CUP EVERY DECADE THEY'VE EXISTED EXCEPT THE 30S

Just want to point out, if you skip to about 0:24 in the first tweet's clip, you can see one of the Bears' black aces (I think it might be Ludwig Persson?) faceplant onto the ice as he comes off the bench

Reactions: Captain Dave Poulin
And yet it took until 2016 for a top 25ish player ever in Makarov to get inducted. Only hockey could take this stance and then still not care about performance outside the NHL.

Maybe he’s just afraid Jane Forbes Clark will crack his skull open and drink his head juice. At least that I could respect.

I think there's still a very, very strong "f*** the Russians" attitude among the crusty hockeyguy voters. Similar to the guys who were raised to hate the Flyers because they were mean to an O6 team.

Another one.

It’s tough to say since he’d be taking a nice pay cut if he entered UFA this summer coming off a 55 point season but Huberdeau to some degree has to be asking for a re-do. He’s getting paid max but he’s in Calgary & the team looks to be awful with every noteworthy player possible looking on their ways out.

It extends to the Czechs too.

When I first read the contemporary pieces, it blew my mind that the European media thought Holecek was the best Goalie outside of the NHL, not Tretiak. After digging into it, I can't say they were wrong. Maybe not right either. But you can build a strong case.

Tretiak performed better against Canada. And so it went.

The jersey decision was the correct one.

Never made sense for the players to be by-default opted in to be a billboard for any cause and then need to opt out, making a scene and distracting from the intention of the night. Doesn’t matter if it’s pride night, military night, or whatever other night.

That’s bad for the players, bad for the teams, and bad for the causes too.

There’s no loss here either. If the teams or players actually care about any of it they can still choose to support or advertise any of these causes in a hundred other ways, just not this one very specific way that really does nothing to start with.

Bang on. Subban said it well, too: players shouldn't be forced to be activists. Like you said, players have supported their own pet causes on their own time for years anyway.

There are very good aspects of the special warmup jerseys, mainly fundraising. No one complained about any of them until people had a problem with the pride one. Saying no to all of them is the only option once the pride sweater became a big deal but most of the backlash from it is because the anti LGBTQ+ stuff is the flavor of the week(month/year) on social media.

It’s really just a whole real life example of “this is why we can’t have nice things”.
