So they’re mad at Hextall for wanting to break up the Big Three, when he and Burke were hired by their President under the condition of doing exactly that? And he also didn’t even end up doing it.

As far as the trade during a team dinner goes, do they expect management to tailor their trades around the players extracurricular schedules?

Yup

So to summarize, Hextall is “meh” as a GM overall - some very good aspects, also plenty of very bad - but in both Philly and Pitt he was unable to really do things as he planned to because of the people above him interfering, which he then gets blamed for.

Probably because some old timer contrarians feel the need to keep propping up the team's dinosaur coach, desperately trying to keep their outdated worldview relevant despite the fact most people don't really care what they think.
What is so "progressive" about Brind'Amour (52) as a coach? His emphasis on offense?

Note Cassidy (54) Boston to Vegas, DeBoer (54) Vegas to Dallas, Maurice (56), Winnipeg to Florida.

Only two HCs under 50 in the top 8.
Woodcroft (46) Edmonton
Hakstol (54) Seattle
Keefe (42) Toronto
Ruff (63) NJ

Yeah, I'm not getting into hockey minutiae with you. It's a waste of my time.

Watch Carolina play, and you'll see a shitload of designed zone entries, designed cycle plays, and designed faceoff plays. Shit doesn't happen on accident, and it's offensively focused rather than worrying about playing like it's 2003. They seem to emphasize that stuff on zone entry and in-zone. Then compare to TB, where a lot of that stuff seems heavily focused on breaking out and getting through the NZ at the speed of a gamma ray burst.

These things don't occur by accident.

The things written make sense. When they were hired, not many people thought that it did then.

Hextall quite clearly wants to have a job where he can tear it apart and start over and hasn’t had a chance to do that properly in each stop. If the Islanders job opened, that should be a job he would want, or a pre-relocation Arizona where it’s sounding like more of them want out.

The idea that that was what was going to be allowed to happen in Pittsburgh before Crosby retired seemed far-fetched unless he was willing to move to a different team, which i don’t think would happen.

Of course, if you have a plan, you can’t say it’s all in your head.

If we played exactly the way Carolina does, I would be ridiculously happy. It takes more than the right players, but that is a big part of it.

I have been sitting here for days thinking about what it would take for us to play like that, but my sarcastic responses to myself always get in the way of clear thinking. I want @Magua and @FLYguy3911 to tell me what would need to happen for us to play like that, but I doubt they could withstand the sarcasm for long enough either.

That Penguins article is a fascinating hit piece to dive into. It makes the Penguins new ownership look sound and on the same logical page as the fans, which is sort of the point of it. Whether the organizational mission changed and Hextall didn't know he was walking into shit is another conversation. But if we're to treat it at reasonably face value -- and frankly, Hextall's inadequacies are known (cloistering himself with his coterie, bad personal relationships, etc.) -- I think it's a perfect example of the hubris of HockeyGuys™, Hextall and beyond. "[Hextall] vented about being unable to oversee a rebuild, instead having to manage a retooling, and said FSG didn’t know hockey like he and Pryor did." The thesis paper practically writes itself.

The idea of individual sports safeguarding secrets is dead. Smart people can cross-pollinate, with humility to know what they don't know and to identify the right people. Let me see in this article.....

The executives asked to see Morehouse’s and Hextall’s plans for the business and hockey departments, respectively. Morehouse detailed team finances and waning ticket revenue in a PowerPoint presentation, but Hextall was caught off-guard by the request and said the hockey plan was in his head. [...] Though unimpressed with Hextall’s lack of preparation, FSG officials didn’t feel comfortable enough about their hockey acumen to question his details — except one. Hextall’s plan included a 2022-23 season with Crosby but without Malkin and Letang.

So, an ownership group that "didn't know hockey" came in and said it was absurd (from a business, emotional, and on-ice perspective) to not ride off into the sunset with your nearly two decade winning core. FSG's business acumen is beyond reproach, and Hextall didn't even have any sort of framework to his master plan?

And growing in volume among Hextall’s complaints: Sullivan, who won the Cup twice in Pittsburgh, was too tight with FSG and had too much influence over Hextall’s decisions.

And then FSG identified who the best employees in their organization were, and surprise, it's the 2x Stanley Cup winning coach with his 8 year track record -- and seemingly great player relationships -- over mediocre dated GMs/Presidents.

[Hextall] clashed with FSG’s judgment that it couldn’t justify Miller’s massive contract extension from a business perspective. [...] Also, in January 2022, he re-signed Jeff Carter — a forward older than Malkin — to a two-year extension, with the premise being that Carter could assume Malkin’s role as No. 2 center for the 2022-23 season. By the time of the organizational meetings in Tampa in April 2022, FSG had determined its first big act as new owners shouldn’t be parting with two players who were cherished by Crosby, worshiped by fans and revered by sponsors.

And then identified what a boondoggle that Miller contract would be. That for all this magical acumen, moves like Carter and Granlund and so on were duds.

Let's see who they hire as GM, but shit like this is why the Flyers will be lapped. They're incapable of fresh perspective or savviness. They think toilet water is sanitary after you flush it.

Will he have a press conference in a hotel conference room?

Dude, the negative Torts posts to “propping up” Torts posts ratio is about 100:1.

It's pretty funny that what looked like the most unpredictable Conference Finals in years is about to become two sweeps.
These teams have really killed the vibe. I'm not even interested in watching the Game 4s.

I hope the Stanley Cup final ends with a sweep now too, just to top it off.

If Bob pops then Carolina could come back. If he doesn't, it's one of the most dominant two-series stretches from a goalie ever. I think either option is cool.

VGK/Dallas, eh

Even if Bob implodes there's no way the Hurricanes turn the series around. I don't think they have that in them. They don't have that swagger of the 2010 Flyers or the 2014 Kings.

They've pretty handily outplayed Florida the whole time. And their own goaltending has actually been good. Bob is the only reason the series is where it is.
