I don't think Foerster will be sent down unless for some reason he seriously regresses, If he can't beat out Allison he should be sent down. Allison isn't a bad player, but he's basically a bottom six mucker now (the injuries have taken their toll, he's lost some burst). So now Foerster can be sent down because Cam Atkinson may be able to return a 3 and a bad contract if everything goes well and because Jordan Weal didn’t carry over his success.
I get that you’re trying to think this through and see it from their point of view. But read my first paragraph again without the window dressing and tell me you really think this is sound process.
If Foerster needs to be pushed, push him. That’s the coaching staff’s job. But make the default status shooting for upside and then adjust if you don’t think he’s listening after 2 weeks.
My expectation is a third line of Laughton - Cates - Foerster, but like last year it'll be fluid, if Foerster shines and/or Atkinson slips . . .
Allison will probably be the 13th forward, competing with Laczynski and Desnoyers, but if he rebounds, they'll find a spot for him.
Don't care what we get for Atkinson (same with Deslauriers), clear the contract spot, regain a few million in cap room (eat a couple million if need be). Same with Laughton at the TDL or next summer. I think their approach is when a kid shows he's ready, they'll create a spot, but they're not going to open a spot and hope a kid is ready.
