I think there's an interesting discussion to be had about how at this point the league undervalues no offense + good defense Forwards when they don't achieve those impacts in the narrow, traditional way.

They say they want defense. What they want is not to ever make a mistake. Very big difference.
McCurdy has NAK with incredible defensive metrics this year, just terrible on ice goaltending. He's what I imagine many GMs see as the ideal 4th liner.

Not sure the Isles are a team that could bring the best out of this potentially. But it is funny how much meat on the bone the NHL collectively leaves out there when it comes to the middle & bottom lineup tier of players.

Look at the level of competition these two faced. For a defenseman to be that sheltered, it has to be a coaching strategy.
It's a big jump from a highly sheltered role to playing real minutes on defense.
As long as you recognize that production is based on a very specialized role . . .

That tweet about Walman is from 2022. He's playing 16.5mins per night at 5v5, against the teams top lines, and is actually putting up better metrics.

They lost Vince Dunn in the expansion draft but they were playing him in a bottom of the lineup role where he was crushing it. He got an elevated role in Seattle & still put up pretty good metrics/results.

So the NHL would have shadowbanned Tulsky who would have laid the groundwork for a full turnaround, then implemented Chuck Fletcher for him to f*** everything up? Sounds about right. We'd be in the same spot
I will always argue that the biggest Sixers f*** up was getting rid of Hip Hop (who was really the OG Gritty in terms of a mascot that was pure nightmare fuel). Need to bring him back like the Isles did with NYIles.
