Jiricek is certainly not worth a #5, anymore than Drysdale was worth a #6.
Jiricek just turned 21 and is in the AHL. That's not the profile of an elite prospect.

Why would you want to overpay for Jiricek?

Jiricek and his camp have felt since last season that he was ready for a prominent role in the NHL — top-four ice time, a spot on the power play, etc. The Blue Jackets have given him chances to grab a lineup spot, but his defensive reads and clumsy skating have relegated him to the third pair — and often to the press box as a healthy scratch.

Minnesota is gambling they can fix his skating and his vision.
Of course, CF made the same gamble with Risto, which failed until Shaw got hold of him.
He's got talent, but he was an "old" (Nov B-day) draft pick.

In the AHL:
2022-23: 55g 2-12 14 -11 (ES)
[same team, UFA Christiansen 50g 7-16 23 -1]
2023-24: 29g 5-6 11 -16 (ES)
Christiansen 62g 7-27 34 +8
Christiansen is a AHL plus player on the 3rd pair in CBJ.
Harris a throw-in for the Laine salary dump, Fabbro a waiver wire pickup.
All played ahead of Jiricek this season.

Jiricek padded his AHL stats on the PP.
He was a young AHL player, but physically mature.

If he turns out to be a first pair guy, it was a good gamble, a #4, overpay, third pair, gross overpay.

A team can offer $2.29MM to $4.58MM (a little higher next season) for 2nd rd pick compensation.
