If the Flyers had traded for Jiricek, I'm sure I'd be reading 20 pages of posts declaring that they overpaid, that Jiricek was overdrafted and really not that good . . .

Jiricek is certainly not worth a #5, anymore than Drysdale was worth a #6.
Jiricek just turned 21 and is in the AHL. That's not the profile of an elite prospect.
Doesn't mean he won't turn out to be a good D-man, but we're not talking a murder's row here:
Werenski
Provorov
Severson
Christiansen
Fabbro (waived by Tenn)
Jordan Harris
Jack Johnson (38)

Even Minnesota ain't rolling out an allstar team on defense:
Middleton
Faber
Chisholm
Spurgeon (34)
Merrill (32)
Bogosian (34)
Brodin (31)

Yet both teams sent him to the AHL.

Why would you want to overpay for Jiricek?

Jiricek and his camp have felt since last season that he was ready for a prominent role in the NHL — top-four ice time, a spot on the power play, etc. The Blue Jackets have given him chances to grab a lineup spot, but his defensive reads and clumsy skating have relegated him to the third pair — and often to the press box as a healthy scratch.

Minnesota is gambling they can fix his skating and his vision.
Of course, CF made the same gamble with Risto, which failed until Shaw got hold of him.
He's got talent, but he was an "old" (Nov B-day) draft pick.

In the AHL:
2022-23: 55g 2-12 14 -11 (ES)
[same team, UFA Christiansen 50g 7-16 23 -1]
2023-24: 29g 5-6 11 -16 (ES)
Christiansen 62g 7-27 34 +8
Christiansen is a AHL plus player on the 3rd pair in CBJ.
Harris a throw-in for the Laine salary dump, Fabbro a waiver wire pickup.
All played ahead of Jiricek this season.

Jiricek padded his AHL stats on the PP.
He was a young AHL player, but physically mature.

If he turns out to be a first pair guy, it was a good gamble, a #4, overpay, third pair, gross overpay.

Just another time to mention how ELC’s are important and that incompetent organizations tend to do incompetent things.
He's in his 3rd ELC season and in the AHL. So that doesn't have much value for Minnesota.

They're going to have to pay more than they want or risk an offer sheet if they play him 30 games or more this season - and if they leave him in the AHL he's going to be disgruntled, just like in CBJ.

A team can offer $2.29MM to $4.58MM (a little higher next season) for 2nd rd pick compensation.

My bad, they can slide one season, thought AHL counted as a "pro league."

Still, same problem, they're going to have to pay him as a RFA in 2026-27, and given what they traded for him, will have to pay at least the 2nd rd comp rate. Given how pushy his people are they won't let him sign a bargain basement deal.

And not sure how long they can stash him in the AHL before he pulls the same stuff he did in CBJ.
He wants to be in the top four and on PP1. That ain't happening for a while in Minnesota.

It’s not the “same problem.” It’s a material difference between someone like him and Drysdale.

Also, he was called up to the NHL so…

This was explained to you when you said this earlier. He was never going to stay in the AHL… Why are you the way that you are?

Check their injury log.
Brodin is out.

Faber and Spurgeon are their top two RHD
Brodin and Middleton are set at LHD.
Spurgeon, Faber and Chisholm are on the PP1, PP2.
Chisholm and Merrill are the options at 3LHD.
Buium should replace them next season.

Jiricek is competing with Bogosian for PT as 3RHD.

Lambos LHD (#26-2021) hasn't shown much in the AHL. Neither has O'Rourke LHD (#39-2020).
They lacked RHD prospects with Spurgeon aging.
Which probably explains the trade, Jiricek was better than what they expected to be available late in the 1st rd.

But all of this was true when you first got your sphincter to formulate words on the subject. Youre just wrong. Everything I’ve said on the matter is objectively accurate before, during and after the trade

What I want to know is who they asked for from Briere, if they settled on Hunt? I had no idea who he was. Looked him up. Still don't know. They asked Briere for a top prospect, but settled on that one guy? This is scary any way you slice it:laugh:

According to Portzline at the Athletic:

“The Blue Jackets initially asked potential trade partners for one of their top prospects, hoping to make a one-for-one swap. When those players weren’t available, the Blue Jackets adapted their demands for a first-round pick and a depth defenseman”.
