Surprised San Jose gave up a 3rd (better of Col and Edm 3rd rd picks) and 6th.
Liljegren is a former #17 pick, but at 25 couldn't keep a starting job.
2x3, where Benning is a 2x1.25 left on his deal, so Toronto clears $1.75M off their cap this year and next year.
And they can clear another $1.25 by sending Benning to the AHL.

A 3rd gets you a terrible rental Defenseman at the deadline. Liljegren is just fine, but still better than that. It's not a steal or anything, but it seems about right to me for a young guy who won't kill you. Especially considering they took Benning back, who is horrendous.

Also feels like it has upside for a return next year if they can turn him around.

Why is it surprising? Sharks take a flyer on a guy who needs a change of scenery. It is a no risk move that has potential to pay off. Smart move really.

He is a bad fit for how the Leafs it seems want to build their D. If the Flyers acquired him you would be saying what deal Danny made.

jFresh said he struggled with the ferocity of the forecheck in the playoffs, which is important for Toronto but basically irrelevant to a team like San Jose

Liljegren is 25 and has been up and down, he's sort of a tweener, not real big, not special offensively, not great defensively. Off to an awful start this season, but had earned an increasing larger role the three previous seasons. Obviously, didn't fit what Berube wants.

A new start may help him, but given the forwards on Toronto, if a D-man can't score there they probably can't score anywhere. And he's not a defensive maven. So it's more of a depth move for San Jose, giving up a late 3rd rd pick.

San Jose is a funny team, obviously rebuilding, yet they've traded away their 5th and 6th this year, 3rd, 5th and 6th next season, and 3rd rd pick in 2027. Guess they don't value later round picks?

Reasonable chance they'll be able to replenish those picks by the deadline. They have 8 pending UFAs on their roster (though I think at least one is an AHLer up to cover injuries) and I would be shocked if they don't trade a minimum of 2 of them before the end of the season, probably more. Granlund, Ceci, and one of Vanecek or Blackwood probably net them more than they've given up so far.

I don’t even like what San Jose is doing, but I would look at where those picks went and when before drawing conclusions.

What were the picks traded for? Need some context.

Torts has turned the Flyers around... in shootouts. Ranked 5th best in S/O win% in the last 2+ seasons at .643. In the previous 17 seasons they were dead last at .360.

Mots of the credit goes to Ersson who is 5-2 with a .792 SO SV%.
