If the Flyers were smart they'd dump Torts and replace him with Montgomery.

Probably self-selection bias.
Winners tend to turn around bad teams, and often get that team to overachieve.
Next season league has film, adjusts and the team regresses to its "norm."
If it falls below that norm (fluctuations around the mean) the HC gets fired.

I'd have to look at a list of the winners, but I feel like it usually goes to the coach of a bubble team that went on to actually win their division, or to the coach of a team whose goalie went absolutely apeshit.

GM of the Year Award is up there especially in hockey when you have a hard cap which limits yearly roster turnover & even smaller market teams if they’re not rebuilding can/will spend close to the cap ceiling now too.

It basically often follows under a similar guideline as the Adams in essentially what team did better than expected coming into the year as your winner.
