In the Fletcher vs. Zito debate, the Flyers picked...the...right...side?

The Panthers have a .675 point percentage — meaning they’ve collected slightly more than two of every three possible points — in the Zito era; among every general manager in NHL history with at least 250 games on the job, only one has a better record. Sam Pollock’s point percentage was .685 in his 14 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. Nobody else has a better record than Zito does.

Time has proven how right that statement was. Zito has rebuilt the Panthers’ roster; no NHL team stays intact year to year, but the only primary players who were on the ice with Florida prior to Zito’s arrival are Barkov, Aaron Ekblad and Sergei Bobrovsky.

The Panthers have had 11 different general managers. None of the first 10 won more than half their games. Zito is the exception.

In a Michael Scott voice:

“And it was either living with myself or being happy. And I chose…the…former”

One of their main selling points when they hired Fletcher was because he was an experienced GM after having just hired a first time GM in Hextall before that.

I am reminded of this instance at a time when Ron Sutter was leading the Flyers in scoring and then missed nearly two months.

The National Hockey League announced yesterday that it would not suspend James Patrick of the Rangers for an incident involving the defenseman and Ron Sutter of the Flyers last Saturday night.
Sutter suffered a broken jaw in the third period of the game at the Spectrum when Patrick's stick caught him in the face. Patrick, who has maintained that his action was defensive and the resulting injury unfortunate, was assessed a minor penalty at the time for high-sticking.
''In my judgment, the resulting injury was accidental and there was no deliberate attempt to injure by Patrick,'' said Brian O'Neill, the N.H.L.'s executive vice president. O'Neill ruled that Patrick should have received a game misconduct penalty because the high-sticking had resulted in an injury. O'Neill assessed that penalty retroactively, which means that a subsequent similar offense by Patrick would result in an automatic one-game suspension.
