To a point.
Rangers (to my knowledge) didn't have 3 expensive signings to make the following year though.

Fortunately for them Kakko and Lafreniere have not met standards. But imagine if they did.

I guess the leafs really screwed themselves by going for good players. They should blow it up and go for players who are not that good next time.

Isn’t it depressing to watch? And that’s a big question too, I liked Campbell, but who’s the backup next year and is this kid as good as what we’re seeing now in the playoffs, that’s a BIG if and again he did his job. What a shaky situation moving forward.
We also don’t know how they will look in an 82 game season either.
Is Campbell playing 60 games?
Sure Marner was top 5 in the North division, 56 games.
Is he still?
Are we really improving or just rearranging the deck chairs.
Do you still think the core 4 are capable of taking on Tampa/Boston/NY/Florida all through the playoffs?

I'll believe it when I see it. Although he would fit with the Islanders and Lou does hand out big money to guys like Hyman. I guess the cap has finally put an end to the Dubas spending spree. Time to sell more of our draft picks for cap space I suppose.

Neither would be a good signing.

If you put a gun to my head.....

Hyman's raise would be an additional $3.5M on the cap and I'd gain $11M in cap without JT. So my net cap savings would be $7.5M by signing Hyman

Hyman & $7.5M in Cap but no JT vs JT & 2.5M in Cap but no Hyman.

I think I'd take Hyman and the extra cap, but it would be a tough decision.

Did you watch this team without Tavares? Hyman was garbage. Cap space is only good if it’s being used lmao. You can’t play “cap space”

People on this board have lost it. Hyman over Tavares? For real?

Dubas' overpayments are killing this team...the flat cap definitely doesn't help...Matthews $1 to $1.5 million overpaid...Marner $1 to $2 million overpaid, Nylander $500K overpaid...even Muzzin is several hundred thousand overpaid...that's $2 million of cap space right there...just keep squeezing guys out like Kapanen, Johnsson (though I think Dubas held onto him too long and should have traded him when his value was high), and now Hyman...is Rielly the next to be squeezed out?

I think Kappy or Johnnson had to be good for a timely goal in the Habs series...

Losing a Hyman for nothing, I’m hard pressed to see how we are “improving” next year.

Is it safe to assume Robertson gets called up and Spezza re-signed ? That's 1.5M. Mikheyev + Brooks will probably be back as well which is 2.375M. So we'd have 16M to fill out the rest AND also extend Rielly/Campbell.

XX - Matthews - Marner
XX - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Spezza - XX
Mikheyev - Brooks - XX

16M. Assume we extend Rielly at 7M that leaves us with 14M. Two top 6 LW, and two bottom 6 RW.

Or am I way off here.
If that’s our bottom 6 for next year I think I will watch less games.

Hyman makes whatever line he is on better and is the only player on this roster who never takes a shift off.

Hard worker and high character. Of course the Leafs will let him walk. Would you expect anything else?
would you rather they over pay him or traded him at the deadline?

Probably not but Dubas knew what was coming down the pipe. Not to have an idea what the greedy 3 wanted prior to signing JT is pure incompetence but if they did give him an idea and then did an about face based on what JT got, ship their asses out of here.

There were so many posters confident that Hyman would take a hometown discount. Not gonna happen it looks like. I guess overpaying does have consequences. Excuse me for getting some satisfaction out of that. That's a lesson the team needs to learn.

Weird to look back on the first negotiation and Dubas was trying to play chicken with Nylander over a few hundred thousand and then ended up blowing the budget on the other two.

Cap hell is cap hell ..

Zach Hyman just going to end up being another casualty of spending 1/2 your cap on 4 forwards.

Hyman is my favourite Leaf because I love his compete and him leaving only weakens the current team even more.

The Leafs really need more players like him and not less.

I’m glad he didn’t and Rielly shouldn’t either.
This core doesn’t make me want to see concessions.

Need 4 of these kinda players - Hyman, Killorn, Coleman, Goodrow - 2 for a checking line and 1 for each of top 2 lines .. my guess we end up with zero and team does not make Atlantic playoffs .. and a tough guy for 4th line .. and a bigger Edmunson type on defense

The reason Thornton was forced on the top line this year was because management wanted to get a good look at potential life after Hyman. Hence also why Vesey had a spot on the 2nd line instead of Hyman.

Let's just say it didn't look too good. Congratulations Dubas - your over-payments have now costed the team its biggest heart and soul player.

Fare thee well, Hyman. I'd love for you to stay, but someone is giving you bad advice if you really turned down a $5 million deal. You are a third-liner, my friend.

Someone upthread mentioned the cautionary tale of Kyle Okposo, and YEP.
Insert any career 15-20 goal scorer closer to age 30 who plays his style of game

Well sorry to tell you but that we have 15-20 million is missing context.
How many players do you need for it?
If we strip down bare bones we are:

Need - Matthews. Marner
Need - Tavares - Nylander
Need - Need - Need
Need - Need - Need

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Need - Need

Campbell
Need

60 million.
What you see there costs 60 million. 4 of them take 40 million.
Ok now you have your 20 million.
Welcome back to the Atlantic as well. We haven’t improved yet from a weak division.

Well I mean, you for some reason took out the people under contract and will be getting resigned such as Engvall, Spezza, Mikahev and possibility Chucky. Toronto will have 20m to fill out Top 2 left wingers, a 3rd line center and winger or a 4th line winger depending on where Mikahev plays and a backup goalie.

You are not way off but Spezza and Brooks as our #3 and #4 C, no way. Spezza will be our #4RWer. I'd move 65 as there are cheaper and better UFA options. We gotta sign at least one of Goodrow, Coleman, Kuraly, Cizikas (longshot), or Hall (pipe dream ??).

I took them out because with the exception of Spezza (who should be 4th line) those guys don’t make you better. They fail at the level of opponent quality.

Even at a discount it might be wiser to spend say $4+m on 2 solid UFAs rather than Hyman. For example Kuraly and Goodrow.
