I know these guys have missed time, but when your 2C, 3C and 4C have combined for a total of NINE goals past the midway point of the year... woof.

Stateofhockey.com is suppose to stream the alumni game tonight, but I can't find it on their site. Anyone else having this problem?

That Koivu stat is not acceptable. I know he's still a VG defender, but c'mon.

I'm hoping the Captain's legendary pride allows him to realize it's kind of over, at least as a top 6 guy who gets power play time. He could be a functional 4th liner/pk'er for a while yet, provided he is willing to bet paid like one.

It depends on if he's actually fully recovered from the surgery, similar to how Suter really needed the extra year to get back to full health.

Either way, Koivu is old and doesn't contribute much offensively. They either bring him back for like $3M on a one year deal as 3C/4C, or maybe he hangs it up. I don't think he'll want to stop playing yet, but who knows.

I'm not sure last year's injury has much to do with it. Just by the eye test, I thought he looked better in the beginning of the year than he has since he missed time this season, IMO.

I don't even really want him anywhere near the #3C spot right now.

I think Koivu is done after this year. He’s not generating anything.

I agree, he started the year well, but clearly doesn't look the same after the injury in December.

I think he has actually looked decent, but just isn't producing any offense. He would be a fantastic #4C, who could take important FO's near the end of close games. A th line of folingo, Koivu, and Hartman would be awesome.

1- he can't come back on a big cap hit.
2- No NMC. Maybe a limited NTC and a gentleman's agreement to not trade him without his consent. If the cap hit is low enough, he would just refuse to report if he didn't want to go, anyway.
3- All this is academic if his main competition is Rask. Rask is just as slow if not slower, much weaker, no great shakes offensively himself, and a mediocre at best defensive player.
4- I would like Sturm to get a shot, but admit that he is not exactly burning up the AHL.
5- At this point it looks like we will have 3 4C's in Koivu, Sturm, and Rask, one middle C in JEE, and one top 6C in Staal (hopefully).

So, at this point I am thinking that we offer Mikko a one year, 2.5M contract for next year. If he can't deal with that, then it's time to move on. I think he will still be an asset to the team at that cap hit, but would rather that JEE gets PP TOI and Ozone FO's than him, so JEE can develop his offense. It's not ideal, but i don't see any other C possibility at this point.

Most straight forward path is not buying out Rask and not re-signing Koivu.

Team isn't going to be very exciting, but Donato could slot in as 2nd line C.

I would buy out Rask and not re-sign Koivu, run with Staal - Ek - Kunin - Sturm as centers.

Why even bother with a Rask buyout? Strum is mostly an unknown still. Koivu looks old/done. Try whatever wing you want at center, the gap between them and Rask isn't very big.

If the Wild somehow get a top-6 center that needs the money then yes buyout Rask. If they are just going to fill the spot with a Cullen/Fehr or Koivu at $2m+ for a year, then just keep Rask and forgo that signing.

Koivu looks to be a better player than Rask, to me. I guess if we are carrying the tank on to next year then playing Rask is the way to go, though...sigh*...

I'd rather have Rask than the shell of Koivu. Rask at least knows where the o-zone is.

Yeah we're in the 11th hour for those of you that don't want to see a tank/rebuild.

If we don't get a top 6 center or two to replace Staal and Koivu, it's not going to matter.

That doesn't mean we'll root for losses.

People need to stop with the disrespectful take that "Alex Stalock isn't an NHL quality goalie". Guy is playing lights out this year for the role he has.
