The answer to this is: to play in a place that he really wants to play. I have no idea if that place exists. This is all just an "if". It's just something he *could* do.
Players typically do this by not signing an extension when they're eligible to. Then when the team they refuse to extend with shops them in a trade, the agent indicates to the prospective trade partner whether they would sign an extension with that team and the player works his way to a place he wants to play. Tavares and Panarin are the only recent superstar players I can think of where they made it to UFA and everyone pretty much knew Panarin was going to test the market. Tavares screwed over the Islanders imo and I think teams learned their lesson after that and won't take a chance on the guy walking away.

Why are you brainstorming prospective destinations our superstar wants to leave us for? Are you a masochist?

The Rangers currently have $47.8M in cap space in the summer of 2026. They can swap him in for Panarin and only lose a net ~$3.6M and if they want a little more room, Kreider has 1 year left with a 15 team no-trade list.

Florida has $40M+ in space that summer, currently.

Chicago is going to have a ton of space.

Dallas could probably do it if they can dump Seguin's last year somewhere.
Do you remember the fans booing Modano the first year when the Stars came to town? That will be NOTHING compared to the booing if Kap asks for an unreasonable amount and signs with Chicago. That kid will need earmuffs.

If he signs with Chicago I have a jersey we can burn

To be prepared for all of the possible outcomes.

If it makes you feel better, I still think it's > 50/50 that he stays for something semi-reasonable ($13-$15 million per).

The worst case is unfolding as usual. I tried watching the game last night and the team is unwatchable. This is the team Guerin wanted. Enjoy your grit and character and shiny defense.

7 points clear of 9th place now and I think we all know what’s coming.

Missed playoffs which is actually better than losing in the 1st round in 6 games.

Kap in a Rags jersey.

Book it

So, after a hot start, we are now 8th in the league in winning %. That's still vg, but a more telling stat to me is goal differential, which usually doesn't lie. In that, we are 14th, tied with CBJ. 24th in PP%, 30th in PK.

IMO, we are back in a familiar spot, which is that as a fringe playoff team. The standings don't reflect that yet, but i think it will sooner rather than later. Odds are that we'll be fighting the Flames and Canucks for the last playoff spot by season's end.

Ho- hum.

Because I can’t take watching this perennial failure disappoint me again when actual hockey players find another gear and all our players turtle. It’s just too much to take
Well there’s no point in not rooting for the playoffs. We don’t have a 1st this year barring something crazy (top 3 protected?).

Top 5

It would be pretty Minnesota of us to finish with the 16th pick and win the lottery, giving Columbus the 6th overall

One position worse and we keep the 5th pick, one position better and we're in the playoffs. True no mans land.

I'm definitely not pro tank. Not only because we have no 1st, but missing the playoffs will make it a hard sell to keep Kap here.

As mediocre as our NHL team is, our AHL team is far worse.

Bill "there's a plan" Guerin is now in his 6th season as a GM.

Next game vs Canes, who just reinforced their team. Then Islanders with 8 wins in their last 9 games.
After the break 2 games vs Detroit (7 game W streak), followed by back 2 back road games vs Utah and the next day Avs.
They need to find solutions to the drought. With no room for extra forwards in the roster they carry 12 F and 8 D right now.
Not sure when Kap is back, but he's not gonna be in tip top shape right out of the gate.

I am sad that none of our young forwards like Milne, Haight, or Bankier have upped their game, and we are depending on re-treads as call ups instead.

Three of our best players got injured. It shouldn't be surprising that when you lose a top 5 forward in the league and two of your top 4 defensemen for multiple weeks that you aren't going to win a lot of those games.

Isn't that because of cap reasons? I don't know all the intricacies but I think we just pay Nashville some money and Hinostroza doesn't count against the cap.

They took 6 out of 10 points on this roadtrip, that’s completely acceptable. They just need to keep that .500-.600 pace the rest of the season & they will be fine. Always too much overreaction after a couple losses.

Also, bring Jiricek back.
