Did Staal take a nosedive to be making only 3.5? Thought he would go for 5m.

I'm a fan of this. Still a good possession player, can be used at C or W and with this term and cap hit, not much risk.

Troy Brouwer is worse and making 1m more.

Good move for him. I thought he would be a good fit in Nashville, but this isnt a bad alternative. Good place for him to rebuild things and see if he can get close to his old self.

I agree. I think Nashville is also a good fit for him. Slot behind Johansen onto the 2nd line. And head of Fisher who would drop to #3.

But, for Minny, it's lower risk given the term and cap hit.

Not going to be saddled with an ineffective $6 million player 5 years from now, and thus buy them out.

Not a terrible deal money or term-wise, but he'll have to play a LOT better than he did last year.

He's toast. Can't stay healthy, can't play with a speed line anymore. Doesn't do things you need from a lower line center.

Was the player I was most scared of signing as a Detroit fan. But, hey,we got lucky retained helm at more term and more dollars! Sigh...Grats you guys probably got the best deal of the day here.

Staal isn't close the player he used to be, but this is a reasonable contract. Three years isn't too long and the cap hit is fair for what he brings to the table at this stage in his career.
