Hmmm, reminds me of the Oilers trading a 1st & 2nd round pick to the Islanders for a big slow defenseman (Griffin Reinhart) that was busting 3 years after being drafted 4th overall in 2012.
That 2015, #16 overall 1st round pick Matt Barzal ended up being a pretty decent player while Reinhart (Sam's bro) played 30 more NHL games. Columbus did ok.

I find it extremely funny that the previous thread was all outside fans telling Columbus fans that the Jackets would be lucky to get a second for their distressed malcontent asset, and now that a trade has happened that includes a first, a second, third, a fourth, AND a 6/7 NHL-ready defenseman who's an upgrade over all three bottom-six LHD in Columbus right now and the new consensus is that Columbus got fleeced.
HFBoards in a nutshell.

Mateychuk dominance in AHL influenced this trade.
How? The BJs had control of Jiricek for years to come. Either they made the evaluation that this is his peak value or like with Laine they panicked.

Waddell is showing to be spineless. On principle he shouldn't have moved Jiricek or Laine as fast as he did. In a market like Columbus you can't just cave to every player’s request to leave. The only advantage Columbus has with these players is time. You want to leave? You better play well and come with a good attitude so you will have value in a trade. If you’re Jiricek you want to ruin your reputation and be a cry baby? Good! Get a house in Cleveland until you're 26.

Burning Jiricek's value because someone else is playing well is just dumb. They are not competing for anything this year or next. They need more assets to be better not less.

The Wild have a guy named Jakob Trenin on their team, Jiricek is likely to look like an above average skater with the afore mentioned dude blundering around.

Ultimately at the end of the day... None of the players (or unnamed future players) have had any impact on this trade at surface value. Jiricek sucked at skating and had a sucky attitude and a sucky agent. Hunt doesn't sound like we'll have the same issue keeping him in the AHL without trying to force the issue to detriment of both player and team.

Most value for players seems to be held at their prospective value when they are young or when they are traded high at age 27-ish (with respect primarily to defensive positions) Otherwise it's a bunch of conjecture about who is fleecing who. Most trades are hard to guage until time tells.

Given the parameters of this trade we won't know the outcome until the long run. My position as a CBJ fan (and part-time asshole) wishes that Jiricek will undergo hardship due to agent and his position being anti-team and that his skating will permanently preclude him from ever being considered "elite" despite the scouting report. I hate assholes. I hope that Mateychuck and Hunt will be more mature and develop into more complete players and team-oriented players and ultimately help the TEAM more than what this agent is hoping to force. Until then, see all of you in 5 years to re-evaluate this since 2026 picks are in play :/

This is awesome, it was literally just 5 days ago when I said I noticed this player had become available and value was shooting down like a bullet and then got corrected on both fronts by Columbus posters who are posting now. I was told RHD like him just don't become available. That was @cbjthrowaway

Yeah this just never works. Everyone always says that, but the team always caves. If we hang on to him and he continues to shit down his leg against NHL competition then we're suddenly getting a 3rd rounder instead of the haul today.

Also, here's the part you're not understanding. Ive alluded to it multiple times in this thread. It's become fairly obvious that Waddell didn't think highly of either of them as players. Not to say they suck or anything, but they didn't fit what he was going for at all. He needs guys with motors who can skate. Neither fit the bill. There was mutual interest for both of them to move on.

Also calling him spineless is hilarious. Talk about an overreaction.

Some fans have to stop allowing themselves to get sucked in every time, by these 4th Period type secondary media types. They’re nothing but glorified fans with access. Not only on UFAs getting traded, thinking they’re gonna get Grade A prospects in return, but especially when it’s a young player. Real life just isn’t a video game.

It’s actually very rare we see a Philly/ANA trade, because nobody is usually trading these kids, and if they are, there’s a negative reason everyone knows about. Like it or not, negative reasons equal diminished trade value. In Philly’s case, him not being signed, and them keeping his unhappiness close to the vest, allowed them to get proper value.

So the Jackets were never getting a Wallstedt or Buium in return. They likely didn’t even get a Shai Buium in return, from the prospect end of things. At some point, you’d think fans would come to terms that draft position only lasts so long, value wise.

Pure value wise, the Blue Jackets got good, raw value, but they also took a big hit here, due to such a high pick now being wasted, so soon after his draft year. Losing a prospect who was supposed to contribute very soon, hurts. So it’s not cool. It’s horrible, but it’s the way things go sometimes.

Waddell was smart to move him now though, before this deal became Hunt and a 2nd next summer.

Hopefully for the Wild, Jiricek will play the good soldier now, and players usually do… At first anyway. If he doesn’t play the good soldier, they won’t get near what they just gave up. If he’s in this same spot in 12 months, they won’t even get a 2nd in return.

It’s why most teams likely stayed away from Jiricek. Especially your managers who’ve been through a situation where a prospect and his agent are trying to dictate a prospect’s development, after he’s been signed. Once you sign that contract, you hand total control over to the teams and they’re not cool with players and their agents dictating anything.

Unfortunately as fans, we also likely won’t see anyone winning this trade anytime soon. It’ll be 2029-2030 before we’ll get a good gauge on everything. Unless Hunt blows up and Jiricek busts. Then we’ll be able to give this to Columbus much quicker. If Jiricek turns into a star, we’ll still have to wait on the 2 picks being 22-23 years old, at least. Maybe if Columbus turns these assets into NHL players, that’ll move the time frame up. As of now though, it’s gonna be years. Hunt really doesn’t have the size to be a Top 4 D, without having any high end attributes. Usually to become such, it would be a player 6’3-6’4” types, who can shut players down. We’ll see though.

I thought maybe they’d get a current, younger NHLer who can help them now, and a nice future. A big, mobile dman, who at least had a better chance to become a Top 4 player. We’ll never know but maybe Waddell was offered those types of deals, but chose the futures instead.

As for fans of other teams, ripping their own managers?? Saying they could’ve beat this deal?

The NHL is still a good old boys network in many ways. They do NOT like prospects and agents dictating development to them. It’s a big “no no”, especially if he’s under contract. Waddell comes from that Detroit line of managers. So good bet none of them would’ve touched Jiricek. The deal itself likely proves such. Teams invest a lot into their own prospects. If they have a kid who’s developing well, and hasn’t been a problem, it’s hard to justify trading him for someone who might end up an issue.

As for no lessor teams meeting the draft pick compensation, meaning a team who’s much more likely to be picking 12-17 let’s say, they too, obviously didn’t want to take the chance on a kid who’s trying to dictate his development, over what they think they can get with that pick. You also have to acknowledge, teams now have NHL tape on Jiricek, and it’s not the greatest defensively. There’s some holes. So knowing he’s pushing to play in the league prior to taking care of those holes, just leaves a bad taste with other managers.

Minnesota was willing to, and took that chance here. We’ll see if it works out for them. Anyone trying to judge a win or loss here already, is getting way ahead of themselves. Waddell has a history with Top 60 picks.

Does anybody actually believe that? Who would offer two firsts for a prospect?

Why wouldn't we believe Russo? He was pretty much spot on with his takes every step of the way, from saying Rossi, Buium, Yurov and Wallstedt wouldn't be part of it, to saying it'll be a package centered around a prospect.

Despite some Columbus fans insisting there was no way any of that could be correct...

Let's not repeat history the day after?

Production doesn't mean shit when you give up more than you produce. He's currently a liability on an NHL blueline, not an asset.
How in the world could you know this when he was in the pressbox every game. This sounds like you're trying to convince yourself your team didn't just get bent over.
