I wonder if Bratt and Wood were basically told "you'll get paid handsomely next year once Johnsson and Tatar". Not sure if I agree the idea with Bratt but could see it with Wood.

UFA after the deal ends, which isn’t the end of the world.

Yeah, it's a overpay but it is what it is.

I hope he's healthy enough to play and we get some value out of the deal. But if not, then it's just a one year deal so not much harm.

I’m a little confused. You say you wonder if Wood was told “You’ll get paid handsomely next year once Johnsson and Tatar are gone” but then say it’s an overpayment?

Hopefully this year is the “Handsomely” for Wood.

Wood's game is completely reliant on his speed. Hopefully when he gets back he didn't lose a step. The few games he played last year, he looked a little sluggish.

In the sense of a long term deal, I probably should've clarified lol. I don't think Wood's on the Devils in 2023.

So... who's left? Zetterlund?

We're going to be about 700k-800k over the cap once we sign him (without putting Bernier on LTIR).

Phew, I was worried that I was able to guess something that actually happened but with this turning out to be a 1 year deal the inscrutable mystery that is the NHL off-season remains unblemished.

You'd send Nemec down and bring Bahl up. You still have to add a 14th forward (Zetterlund).

They don't have to add anyone, the min NHL roster can be 20 players (incl. goalies). The max is 23. It's pretty common to have less to avoid salary cap.

They can make it work with this contract, they basically maxed the cap and gave Wood all they had.
