Fitz really shouldn't have qualified Wood. This is really an inefficient use of the space here - with all the cap gymnastics proposals in this thread as evidence.

If Wood returns to form he's a valuable commodity for this team. It would've been silly to just throw that away for some extra cap space that we may not need anyway.

The cap gymnastics proposals are evidence of nothing, other than it's the middle of summer and there's not a lot else to discuss.

In all likelihood, Fitz goes with the obviously solution which is to just start the season with Bernier on LTIR to open up space for Zetterlund.

I'll take the middle approach.

Having him this year is no big deal, but I don't really want him next year.

He's either gonna be priced out of coming back or if he doesn't then it probably means he was either so bad or so injured that we shouldn't be bringing him back anyway.

We can't keep bringing guys back just to bring them back and I don't see him being necessary to keep bringing back, nor do I think we should keep bringing him back at this salary. Especially if it's just for the 4th line. We should be looking for younger guys to replace him for much cheaper.

I think Severson will be the most costly loss after this season and pretty much the only guy of much consequence who we stand to lose.

And that includes Wood, Tatar, Johnsson, Graves.

Graves is pretty much in the Wood category of being a guy that if we kept him then we're just keeping him to keep him.

Agreed, the cap issue really isn’t anywhere near the issue people are making it out to be.

Yes. Bolded. Who knows? Maybe Fitz just has a soft spot for him? Maybe Miles was the one pushing himself to come back early?

I highly doubt what the club does with Miles Wood would have huge repercussions for the Devil's reputation.

What we do know is that the Devils are in a bit of a cap bind for this season, as of now.
Yes and no. Assuming no more injuries to open the season and Wood actually playing they should be ok to start. They may have to do some juggling to get a guy up from Utica but can always demote Johnsson as needed to free up a bit more than $1 mil even if that is not ideal. If someone does get hurt or if both Bernier and Wood stay injured they probably have to use some LTIR for some period of time but if they can minimize that time they are hopefully ok. I'm skeptical they need to bank cap space for a deadline addition this year. If they can just avoid bonus overage that's probably all they need to accrue. My guess is that at some point they move Graves and Severson and Wood and maybe Bernier if he can actually play and once that happens the problem will be resolved.

This is why I want Miles Wood on this team.

Love watching that speed.

The most impressive play that I remember, though, is when there was a 2 on 1 against us with Wood chasing behind them, and he pointed to the defenseman to pick up the trailer cause Wood knew he'd catch up to the lead puck carrier.

I don't remember who was was against. Was hoping one of you youtube junkies could find it.

I missed it being reported he would be ready to go for camp. Was that solid or just speculation though?
What if it was.....

SOLID SPECULATION?

If he returns to form he's maybe worth the contract. If he doesn't...well, yeah.

Running in LTIR is never ideal and if Bernier actually gets healthy, they'll have some tough decisions in-season.

I remember that but I can't remember who it was against.

People gotta realize the Devils really like Miles Wood. They qualified him cuz they don't wanna lose him, and they think he's worth the money he's getting paid (probably more). There's a reason it's gonna be Tatar and Johnsson being bought out instead of Wood despite the fact he might not even be the same player anymore.

I don’t think either of them are getting bought out. We’ll just ride out the last year of their deals.

I still maintain Blackwood is the biggest f***ing problem with this team and salary (big surprise, I know) and I think if he has a better season than he did last year (it would probably be hard for him to be as bad as last year) by even just a little we’ll probably Wood him with a raise and not Samsonov him, which is what we should be doing.

I know you intensely dislike Blackwood but he's making 2.8 million against the cap, which is behind 12 other contracts on the roster (13 if you count Bernier). Hell if you include Bernier Blackwood is our 3rd highest paid goalie.

Bernier is unable to play though.

When you look at his last two years, Blackwood is easily the most overpaid player on the team. If I had to really be fair I could say Geertsen is because he shouldn’t be in the NHL at all.

I don’t care what he’s making this year. But I absolutely and intensely am bothered by the possibility of giving him a raise next year.

$7.5 million (let’s say) is a lot of money for a Blackwood/Vanecek tandem in 2023-2024 if it isn’t a pretty big hit and a disappointment in 2022-2023

The team is paying over $7 mil per to a 3C and you are worried about $3 mil per for Blackwood?

The Devils have 73 thousand dollars of cap space and Zetterlund still needs a deal. Yes they can likely move Bernier to LTIR when the season starts, but what happens if he's ready to play before the season's over? Someone's gonna get injured at some point and you need cap space for call ups.

Someone on the current roster is getting moved, whether it's buyouts, trades or waivers.

Saying that Blackwood is the most over paid player on the Devils is flat out ridiculous. He has had multiple injuries and a rough case of COVID. If he stinks this year when fully healthy then I might agree with you.

Blah blah blah blah.

He was the worst player on the team last year for what was expected.

I’m not convinced it was all injuries. His AHL career was mediocre as all f***.

I’m not gonna say overall Blackwood is overrated, but by a small amount of people he is.

And all that anyone has to say he’ll be back is faith and hope. That’s all you’ve got. Goalies with his AHL resume are usually not great goalies in the NHL.

I will offer one tempering thought. If Bernier stays healthy and they don’t lose Wedgewood maybe they shut Blackwood down early and all we know is he was hurt and he doesn’t have the awful season we watched from him. At that point the narrative would be a bit different and center around his rehab and it wouldn’t be quite as bleak.

Fair enough, he probably should have been shut down in December, as that's when he was starting to look unplayable.

But I can remember a few particularly poor games even in November.

And his last game of the season was one of his worse of the entire year.

My feeling is that the injuries made him worse, but I'm skeptical they were the difference in him being good and absolutely unplayable and not just mediocre and absolutely unplayable. His AHL career showed enough red flags for an army of bulls to riot.

I agree with you but him getting shut down in November would have spared the worst of Blackwood’s season. It would just have taken the edge off. You could maybe be a bit more optimistic than last season left us.

He played in 25 games last year due to injury. Everyone is saying to see how he looks when he is healthy, but you have already made up your mind so there is no changing that.
