There was already a change in practice. Lucic will get a tryout on the Carter-Toffoli wing.It was my first chance to see Lucic on the Kings last night. He looked totally out of sync honestly.
I don't know if that was an off night or that's how it's been so far, but hopefully he finds chemistry with Kopitar, and soon.
I honestly thought that Jones would eventually uproot Quick, and we would end up trading Quick, but obviously, it didn't pan out that way. I've always been a big fan of Jones and his steady, and consistent goaltending.
Having said that, I still like the Lucic trade. Lucic is one of my favorite players, and definitely my favorite king.
Trading Quick? Once they gave him that contract, that was it. Basically married for life after that. You can't just trade a goalie making almost $6 million on the cap. There's no decreasing the ice time on a different line, or having him become a checker, etc. A goalie plays, or he sits. No in between.
Good or bad, Quick is a King. Unless they buy him out at some point.
...and I'm an alcoholic.![]()
6M for a goalie of Quick's caliber and experience, is a reasonable cap hit.
And if he's playing well, the Kings aren't trading him, because they're winning games. If he's the backup to some younger guy because he lost his job, what other team is going to trade for him? Again, play or sit. Would you trade for a $6 million goalie who lost his starting job? Why is Ward still in Carolina? Were teams lining up for Luongo?
That's the tricky part with goalies. They're like running backs in the NFL, but also a bit like QB's. If you have a good one, you're not trading him, like a QB. However, because the position can be so black and white, you'd rather not give them huge money, like a RB.
I get why Lombardi did it, and you gotta do what you gotta do. Part of Quick's contract, like Brown's, was timing. How do you not give Quick whatever he wanted after the 2012 season? It was a perfect time to have a career year in every possible way.
If you have thoughts of trading Quick, the time to do it would've been before signing him to the huge contract, but who would do that? His value was never higher, and will never be higher, than at that moment.
