I'm glad it's settled. Finality in this mess. Hopefully a Kopitar extension follows.

I was keeping tabs on Stoll in order to get an idea on Richards. Stoll's situation wasn't as severe as Richards' so what we can infer is more limited. As far as I know, Stoll did not leave the US since his arrest. But I didn't look very hard to see if he did.

The fact it didn't happen at the border makes the case against Stoll less severe. And he made a plea deal rather quickly that didn't involve drug charges.

True that. But it also wasn't law enforcement that caught Stoll. It was private security at the pool. So there was a chain of custody issue with the drugs.

The only way we would have learned anything with Stoll is if he missed the Oct. 15 road trip to Montreal and if it was for an immigration issue.

We learn nothing if he hypothetically missed for any other reason.

They take care of this as part of the Emperor's Package.

I'm kind of confused by the league is even allowing the Kings to do this. Is Richards supposed to be retired? If I were rival teams, I'd be pretty pissed off.

Settlement talks are allowed under the grievance committee. And none of us know what exactly is going to happen here.

Regarding Mike Richards-LAK settlement that's expected to be concluded today: 1. LAK will pay the cap recapture penalty for next 5 years.

LAK will also face annual cap hit equal to dollars being paid out to annually to Richards and cap hit will last as long payment schedule.

No word yet on precise numbers but hearing the payout is for a very long time.

In other words, things will stay as they are short term with the recapture for 5 years. Then, they will pay an insignificant (less than $1M annually is my guess) amount FOREVER.

That's the Kings, always breaking new ground! First winning Cups in a fashion like no other team in history, now voiding contracts like it's going outa style! In all seriousness, the circumstances are key here. Your player has to break the law like Richards did AND the team has to be looking to get rid of him. How often does that scenario play out?

Like how the rest of the league should be pissed about Pronger working for the league while being paid by Philly?

Going to be longer than that just based off this.

I guess 15 years .

Gagne got old
Penner couldn't control his weight
Richards game collapsed and he likely became addicted to drugs
Fraser and Westgarth were fringe NHL'ers

It is crazy though, its only been a little over three years since they won that cup and what's become of so many of those guys.

There's really not any comparable situation for this, and it will likely set precedent for future situations. This type of solution does address a couple things.

1. The NHLPA can still get their player some of their due salary if they screw up without a long, drawn out process.

2. Teams have at least some way to ensure players don't just turn into druggies or criminals that can damage team image. (not that MR is either, just an example)

The NHL will also see this as a way to protect it's own image in unsavory situations, while not having to battle the PA over each issue.

I don't really look at this as cap circumvention, but more of a compromise. If Chigago did the same with Kane had evidence been more damning, I wouldn't think it's fair that they would have to suffer huge cap penalties either.
