That's a double-edged sword for them though, isn't it? If contracts are not guaranteed, players will demand more money per year. The PA will fight that tooth and nail as well.

The die has been cast. That's why the owners went for the 50/50 split first. The players are going to find it very difficult to get more that 50% of revenues.

I do think it will create more contracts that are as front loaded as possible, but that has already been happening.

I don't think the NHLPA has the staying power to resist the owners. Their time as players is very finite. Time is always on the owner's side. The owners have seen the fans return time and time again after a work stoppage. As long as it doesn't happen in the middle of a season fans don't like it, but they don't go completely nuts.

Fehr created lockouts when he led the MLBPA to a strike which ended up canceling the playoffs and World Series. As far as I'm concerned, F Fehr.

If the league goes after the contracts, the PA will go after the cap, and it'll be at least a year of a lockout, probably more. Eventually, the league will win, but that fight would make us all look back on 04-05 as the good old days.

The owners have shown time after time that they have more resolve than the players, so I agree with you.

Most of the reporters seem to know what the situation is exactly but can't comment publicly for fear of being sued.

NewPort Sports Management must have warned everyone involved not to leak anything until this story comes out officially, if ever.

There's a difference between reporting rumors or gossip about someone and reporting what the Kings are alleging are the grounds for termination. The latter is documented somewhere. I imagine once a reporter can confirm what the Kings are alleging specifically, it will be reported. You can't be sued for defamation for reporting what the Kings are claiming happened.

So word is that:
1. something happened at a border checkpoint on June 17 involving Mike Richards. It doesn't make any news for over a week.
2. Then Lombardi hears of it an hour before the draft while he's been working on trades with two other GMs. During the first round of the draft he informs the other two GMs something occurred and will come out, making Mike Richards untradeable.
3. Then Lombardi puts Richards on waivers, which totally looks like he's going to get bought out.
4. After he clears, Lombardi drops the bomb and terminates his contract. Seems to be okayed by the league.
5. Rumors fly around the hockey journalists, but not a single one wants to actually state what he/she has heard.

I'm so confused by this whole thing. Mystery!
1. The obvious question, what happened at the border crossing?
2. Why has it not been reported until yesterday that something happened on the 17th?
3. Who has heard details of what occurred at the border crossing now? At least Richards himself, the border patrol person (no idea which side), Lombardi and probably Kings lawyers, NHL office, Richards's agent/lawyer, and some members of the press. The two GMs know something happened, but maybe not what happened.
4. Why put Richards on waivers? Maybe Lombardi was undecided about his course of action as of Sunday so he put Mike on waivers in case of buyout.
5. Why hasn't the press spilled the beans? It appears that there are multiple sources (Pierre McGuire, Melnick from TSN 690 mentioned the border crossing, the lawyer guy from TSN seems to know what happened, Katie Strang from ESPN mentioned multiple sources for her story). There appears to be an implicit threat of a libel suit if a reporter jumps the gun. Why is this story so toxic?

Seems that Lombardi heard first, precipitating the whole affair. From whom we don't know. Maybe Richards himself? Implicit in the whole thing so far is the possibility of Richards running afoul of the law in such a way that justifies terminating his contract. The border patrol must run a pretty tight ship for this to have gone over a week without making a splash. Was this whole thing covered up for a week?

4. Why put Richards on waivers? Maybe Lombardi was undecided about his course of action as of Sunday so he put Mike on waivers in case of buyout.

From what I understand, under the CBA a team was to put a player on waivers before terminating the contract.

So, with this little leak by this guy at the end, we now know that Richards can be charged criminally for this incident, as early as today or maybe later, if at all.

So If charges are filed, does that mean they will necessarily become public knowledge?

A shocking incident at the border that might result in charges somewhere between now and never. Is he an alien? Like a MiB alien? It's aliens.

That would be consistent with official descriptions of The event as "wowzers" and "icky," particularly if the aliens part turns out to be slimy, mucus-covered, or tentacled.

That one I can answer: You have to put a contract on waivers before termination, just as you do with a buyout.

As for the rest, there are a whole lot of unanswered questions right now. I hope we find out sooner rather than later. A miracle it's been kept quiet this long with so many in the "know".

This wouldn't surprise me at all. Fehr is going to fight this, because he has to have the player's back.

I wonder if this attorney would ever find it acceptable to terminate a player's contract.

As I have said before, the owners will want to get rid of guaranteed contracts in the next CBA. It likely will happen. The owners aren't going to want to pay a guy $5M+ a season when his production drops off the table just a couple of years after signing a big money contract. The owners are going to insist on being able to cut players.

The one issue with that is going to be the constant player movement. Look at Darrell Revis, best corner in the NFL has moved each of the last three offseasons. You will see high end veteran players signing 1 and 2 year deals.

NHLPA won't say this, but this is precedent setting for all of Pro Sports (Especially the NFL where the culture is even more violent on and off the field) so ALL PAs are watching this.

Now if you'll excuse me, my 5 year old is throwing my Star Wars Pasta all over the walls of my house! :amazed:

Jeebus.

Both Kings' SC runs kinda were miraculous -- like sell your soul kind of miraculous -- and now we're watching the part of the movie where those little clauses that looked innocent enough actually bite really hard.

Lombardi should probably add a good "Pactwiththedevil-ologist" to his staff. Maybe the guy who helped Kurt Warner escape.

I suggest freezing him in carbonite

In the NFL the contracts aren't guaranteed. There's always a portion but most isn't. So that is a different thing all together.

That is true. But if I'm a player and I'm accused of being involved in a drug smuggling ring...and it's during the season, the NFLPA will still challenge it the release if it happens. The NFL still has an interest in this. Although your point is well taken.

Maybe he's not down for pasta for breakfast. #baconpancakeseveryday

@royalhalf
Not surprised that Mike Richards got stopped at the border since he’s pretty much been a perimeter player for the last 2 seasons.

lol

If Canadian privacy law prevents the CBS from commenting further, how the heck do certain hockey insiders know what happened?

Color me skeptical.
