Don't be silly, we're obviously trading Richards + Toffoli + Kempe + 1st for Phaneuf. And we should be so lucky that they'll actually indulge that.

Honestly I wouldn't even really want to trade Richards for Phaneuf straight up. I know that Richards is in AHL and could be had for free, but I feel Phaneuf has just as much negative value. Like Richards I feel Phaneuf is paid about 2x as much as he should and it's more cap hit than Richards. Phaneuf is also toxic to a dressing room (I don't care that he is a C, he is an insufferable person that moved away from Edmonton years ago since no liked him in his hometown). I'd almost rather have Clarkson.

Absolutely, we have to improve our chances of making the playoffs first. To clarify, I would rather keep Richards, but if a trade is made the TML wouldn't be my top choice.

Anyway, we've got a Monarchs win today. Here's hoping for a Kings win tonight.

Yeah, I don't know about that. I did a double-take on that line.

Seems I have heard that for a long time now. And the Maple Leafs get worse by the minute.

Ha, yeah, I know what you mean, but they have Shanahan and Dubas and a real analyst team now. Over the course of this year they have been in discussion about how to revamp the club, clearing out the old way of thinking, deciding to shed their old/flawed cornerstones like Phaneuf and starting a long-overdue proper rebuild. Remember when they used to scorn possession stats and the Kings' way of building a contender? Not anymore.

Nonis still needs to go, but I bet he's not there much longer. Things are changing there.

I'm going to puke my guts out if we somehow end up with Dion Phaneuf, don't want that guy anywhere near this team.

Considering that salary would almost equal out between Phanuef and Richards and that Toronto wants to unload Phanuef, or so it sounds, either they have an unrealistic price on Phaneuf, which would be doubtful if they wanted him moved, or Sutter has been less than supportive of having Phanuef join LA. I doubt Phanuef comes to LA personally because I doubt Sutter wants Phaneuf.

I'd rather keep Richards in the minors and hope he recovers his career then trade for Phaneuf. Trading one bad contract for a worse contract doesn't fix our cap issues and I have pretty heavy doubts that Phaneuf would even fix our defense issues.

Perfectly said. This should be a sticky on the trade and NHL pages.

Love it

Guy was almost a point a game guy just over a year ago. He gets his bell rung twice in a short time frame and never trained like he should of since he was in the show.

I think this is the wake up call and no slight on the AHL but rest only playing around weekends that he needs. If Nash can bounce back 110 % better then ever after shaking off the cobwebs and recommitting I am maybe a little hopeful but think that a Warrier like Richie can get back to at least 80% of what he used to be.

He seems to be doing and saying all the right things. Even he admits his legs are starting to come back.

That 30 ish crowd ha a rough year last year if you look at Ovi, Nash and even our own Brownie. All others snapped back, give Ritchie a little time and if not traded the AHL stint and summer to recommit.

Copied this from the Monarchs thread because I liked it, but also in reference to the last line--maybe Richards DID train his butt off this last summer, but three months doesn't undo all those years of not doing it, i'd also like to see what happens after this year for him (whether it's with our org or not) because I agree, maybe this is just what he needed to reinvent himself as an NHL player.

If Sutter and Lombardi agreed to trade for Phanuef I would have faith that the guy has got a bum rap and would turn around his career in LA. The Kings have done a great job of determining character and pouncing on guys who have soured in other markets only to turn them (back) into winners. Plus, it would give the Leafs the chance to start their re-build with Richards and Jokinen up the middle!

I don't know the lockerroom issues, no one really does, but if the Kings were to magically be able to trade Richards for Phaneuf without any retention it would not hurt the Kings cap, it would clearly help it.

With MR in the AHL he is eating up $4.8 of dead space, plus Shore's cap hit to replace him on the NHL roster. The Kings are also still in need of a 2nd pairing defenseman as the roster currently stands with Voynov's uncertainty. Now Phaneuf at 7m to be a 2nd pairing defender is far from ideal, but it's better than having a $5.8m AHL center. Phaneuf and Shore would cost the Kings about $8m in cap space to solve the defense issue and have a 4th line center. Right now the Kings are paying Shore 925k to center the fourth line and $4.8m for Richards to go away, if the Kings were to trade for Sekera for example, that would add another $2.75m and that is for an expiring contract that would go up significantly if the Kings re-signed him.

Again, Phaneuf is far from ideal and I would not be interested in him without the Richards contract going the other way, but when it comes to MR and this ridiculous contract you have to look at the bigger picture and that would be a no-brainer deal for the Kings. And who knows with the Leafs potentially blowing it all up maybe they would take MR without any retention for Phaneuf if the Kings included some nice draft picks or a guy like Kempe or other prospects to go along.
