He played basically every night with us last year, no? He played some long stretches in MTL the year before, too.

I dont know why I didn't think he played that many games with us last year as he did, but you are correct haha. (put up almost a half point a game which surprised me)

The Zub affect looks to be very real

Great may be an overstatement... he's been much better though and can provide an element that we really lack, especially with Brannstrom out and Wolanin being ineffective.

All in all, probably one of our better trades in terms of paying close to the bare minimum for a type of player who can do the bare minimum in an area that we really needed help. I think we should be able to get a late pick for him, maybe not fully recouping what we gave up but close.

Hes definitely a guy who will consistently underperform expected goals against for that very reason. His mistakes are glaring. That said, he has had bad puck luck on top of that fact.
I should say great compared to his role and expectations. That pairing is putting up crazy numbers atm. SCF% 65%, xGF% 66%.

Don't think any playoff team will be looking at Rielly, here's hoping we can fool someone though.

In a normal year I'd be in agreement, but I think teams will be extra cautious this year. Even in a normal year, we've seen it pay off to have 10 options on the backend. We may well need to take back equivalent or greater salary in return but we will need bodies anyways.

Would be great for us.

I pity any team that has to play Reilly in the playoffs or meaningful games.

Agreed, but we've seen plenty of truly awful DMen in the playoffs over the years, even when there wasn't a pandemic.

I look at a team like NYI who doesnt have a tonne of experience on D, VGK with 7 guys with more than 10 games of experience, one of whom is on IR...

I could see us doing a deal like Reilly for Komarov + 5th or something along those lines. I dont expect much but I think we can find a way to leverage him into a warm body and a late pick, given cap constraints and the unprecedented level of "unplayable injuries" that we will see this year.

Reilly is an adventure out there.. Very inconsistent .. you never know what you're going to get.. A stretch pass to our forward for a breakaway or a 10 bells giveaway right up the slot to an uncontested opposing forward. His brain seems to literally randomly shut right off with some regularity.. In between those times he plays pretty well.

Would they rather a guy like Rielly or a guy like Gudbranson? There will be ample guys like Gudbranson available around the league, they are the usual playoff depth guys. “Sturdy” D. Rielly is the polar opposite of what I’d be looking for when trying to fill in depth.

I can see teams getting a big, vet on the backend to sit in the press box that you can put out if there are 2/3 injuries to the D core, I really can’t see teams actively pursuing Rielly for insurance.

I’d love to be wrong, and an extra 5th/anything would be fantastic for Rielly.

Fair points, although I'm not sure how many teams will be truly out of it by the deadline

He's a gambler, with high risk high reward plays. He has good puck-handling skills, and lately has been playing more within his abilities, possibly due to having a capable partner (Zub) that allows him not to have to do everything by himself, and the results are pretty good. Lately he's even shown the ability to take the body.

I've always been happier with him than with J. Brown or Coburn. I don't mind him on our 3rd pairing when Brannstrom is back playing on the second pairing. I can't decide who I prefer, Reilly or Wolanin. Secretly I think I prefer Reilly.

Reilly’s been solid and his game is getting better. I’d extend him 2 years - 2 x $1.75 million

I think he is for sure to far up in the lineup....But we really dont have many more options ,Branstrom has issues in the Defensive zone as well....Sanderson cant be rushed, but I feel when he is ready our blueline will be one of the best in the league

If we can get Reilly for another over a 5th rounder you run laughing to the bank.
I'd give up a pick with him just so I don't have to watch him anymore.

I don't know how anyone has watched him consistently this year and thinks he is better than Branntsrom. To think it's beneficial to have him playing over any player with any potential at all is perplexing to me. It's a true testament to how good Zub really is.

I strongly disagree. His game is rapidly deteriorating from where he was a couple weeks ago. Buddy is completely lost out there. He should start sitting some games out.

really? Team looks solid to me and he’s been a big part of that on LD. He’s not perfect but at $1.75 for a D who is till growing I’d take it.

what options over Reilly? Wolanin?

I wholeheartedly disagree.

If you need a vet because you don't wanna rush the young guys, you sign a significantly better vet than Rielly. You go after a good #5 defenseman. I see Rielly as a 7th on a good team and a #6 on a bad team. You gotta upgrade over Rielly. If it's not a young guy making the step, so be it, sign a UFA.

This team's biggest problem is that Reilly is surrounded by 3 other "7th on a good team, 6th on a bad team" defensemen, alongside Chabot (1-2), Zaitsev and Zub (both 1-4 on a bad team, 5-6 on a good one).

We're kind of stuck with him and he's been relatively ok. Reilly is still best as a 7th defenceman though and the Sens should be looking to add a real top 4 defencemanin in the offseason and then fill the other spots with the young guys.

Well yeah. I don't see the need for so many dinosaurs like gudbranson, Coburn, j brown.

I would overhaul the d.

Keep Chabot. Keep zub. Keep brannstrom, keep zaitsev until his contract is done. Keep wolanin for one more year to see if he turns it around. Sign a better free agent than Rielly. And then in the next couple years bring in Sanderson, JBD, kleven, Thompson (if he develops a brain)

Only way we re-sign Reilly is if we want to get another top pick in 2022.

That's the only way.

Otherwise, it would be a slap in the face of the youngsters to re-sign Reilly when Brannstrom is being healthy scratched and if we went a decent guy, we should aim significantly higher in UFA through someone like Martinez.
