He’s a 1D on a losing team. And considering winning and losing in the NHL is heavily influenced by the quality of your D group, what does that say?

Not dismissing him entirely but given the influence D have on winning and losing and Montreal being lottery contenders, certainly you understand the scrutiny.
By that logic there isn't a single good/valuable player on teams out of the playoffs... Or just defensemen?

Rebuilding or not, the Canadiens are going to be bringing along a lot of quality prospect defensemen in the next few years, and they could stand to have a few stalwarts back there to shelter them and teach them good habits.

By all accounts he's happy and isn't chafing under the rebuild. They should retain him. They have him for two more years under a very nice cap hit. They can revisit this as he approaches free agency.

Power play TOI/GP league leaders: Theodore, Makar, Josi, Quinn Hughes and… Matheson.
So he’s a PP ONLY specialist. Better pray some team loses their PP QB because he’s much worse as a defender than any contenders top pair guys and PP QBs.

At 5 vs 5, Matheson is a disaster. No PK chops either.

IMO Mike Matheson could be the missing piece for LA. I think him running their top pp would be unreal and him and Doughty on top pairing

Outside of them Minnesota is the only good fit i see. Maybe Toronto in off-season

He's not really a guy that's going to "run your powerplay".
