Player Discussion Mike Matheson

27min against best in the league offense... 19min at ES...

They put up 1 goal, 28 shots.

That's a pretty solid day at the office.

Haters gonna hate, but Matheson is giving this team great value at his cap hit, and the experience he's gaining will serve him & us well as he eventually slides into a #2 or perhaps even #3 role over the next 2 seasons.

Great pick up by KH
And he actually wants to play in a city that has great difficulty in attracting free agents. The complaining mob here would be shocked to know how many elite players have Montreal on the their list of teams that they can't be traded to. Maybe, just maybe its because of the ever present complaining mob.

On a team that is not contending like the Habs, Matheson is fine. At the very least, he's entertaining.
But on a team that is competitive in most games because of its mobile defence, Matheson is their most mobile defenceman.

He's bad defensively, but honestly there's no guarantee Hutson will ever replicate an offensive season like Matheson is puting up, and Matheson is 6"2, sticks up for his teammates, and is one of the most beautiful skaters in the league.

I'd be happy to trade him for a good return but I'd be willing to see how he performs in a system with more structure and more experienced d-men. Right now he has total freedom as a rover and that leads to a lot of points for him but also a lot of goals against. He could be more effective without forcing himself to be the #1.

Matheson plays 26 minutes a game in all circumstances. If MSL had a better option, he'd use it. He doesn't.

I hope the people who hate on Matheson are gonna be patient with Hutson. A young offensive only type with very questionable defensive upside is unlikely to be a fan favourite with those guys, they certainly aren't known for their ability to chill and let kids develop either.

If Lane produces the same offensively as Matheson that's a great development story already, I'd say theres a decent chance he never reaches those numbers. I can also imagine many scenarios where Hutson is much much worse at D than our boy Mike here.

Not sure why we would want to throw MM away and bring in his much younger and less experienced mini-me if that's how this plays out.

Hutson is way better than Matheson though. And he will pass to Slavkovsky making it impossible for the other teams to defend.

Matheson isn't even good offensively. Aside from leeching points and the one or two time a month he looks like McDavid he's a detriment to his team.

If Hutson generates the same output we'll hate on him. The hope is that he's an actual good player though, but thats just me.

You're selling him short. He's better than unidimensional offensive dynamo Chris Wideman. Are his numbers inflated by his usage? Absolutely. But the dude is toolsy. It's not a complete case of Brent Sopel, Paul Mara's etc fluking out a 40 pts season due to booming shot.

Sopel and Mara were defensive players that chipped in.

Matheson is neither offensive nor defensive. Hes a 4 on 4 and 3 on 3 specialist.

I won't get into the Hutson versus Matheson debate because I need to see Hutson at the NHL level first.

But I watched last night's game and Matheson seemed to be better at getting Slaf the puck on the pp. I do wonder if when Dach comes back if Suzuki would be better at the top of the diamond than Matheson.

Let’s see if he can even play at the AHL level.

People saying that Matheson is bad defensively I not sure we are watching the same games, he make mistakes like everyone but he isn’t a liability on the ice he might be better offensively but he is above averages defensively…

He makes a ton of good plays both offensively and defensively. But then he'll make that one really bad play that costs us a goal. Last night against Tampa he just made a terrible play with the net empty. He tried to go around kucherov at the top of the circle, only to go into the corner with the puck. There was no need to try to beat kucherov one on one just to go into the corner. He could have done many other safer plays to try to set up a scoring chance. Kucherov picked his pocket and started a play the other way for an easy Stamkos empty netter. Game over.

Some times it's his stupid reads that let a player walk in for a goal. I don't get it sometimes. I hope he can seize with the big brain cramps. Even if they only happen once a game, or however frequent they happen, they are avoidable and often very costly. It's like the really good qp - except he constantly throws interceptions. Or the really good running back can drive you down the field, only to fumble often and give the ball right back to the opposition.

good post. Overall, MM is a net positive, but you know that you'll have to live with the random disaster moments. He's not great on the PP because it involves standing still too much. He needs to be in motion. Hopefully his TOI goes down as soon as next season. As Guhle, X and Reinbacher all develop, it would be great to see MM on the bench when we need to close out a game.

But he played 28min and made 3 good play to keep the puck in or create a scoring chance before that… we were down by two goals him losing the puck wasn’t great, it a mistake but it far from what cost us the game and it is clear he made more good play than mistake, people keep focusing disproportionately on the mistakes also when you make a mistake vs. Top talent (Matheson plays against the top lines) it more dangerous than against 4th line plug... I get that you don’t what a Qb that throw pick or RB that fumble but if the game hinge on your best player being Perfect when everyone else is dropping passes or missing tackle or block… people will blame the QB and RB for the last mistakes when there 1000 plays that could have changed the outcome of the game and even with the mistakes he might have out played is opponent… Matheson make mistake and the puck jump over is stick at the worst time but he is far from awful or a liability.

I actually don't have a firm opinion on Matheson - both in terms of what I think of him as a player right now, and what I think he can become.

He's taken his game to another level offensively since coming to Montreal and playing in the role of #1 dman. As far as the future is concerned: can he take his game to another level defensively? Can he still be good and produce offensively with reduced minutes?

As for what he is right now. Evaluating him is n't as simple as: he made 7 good plays and 5 bad plays, therefore he's a net positive. How much did the good plays affect the team? How much did the bad plays affect the team? It's hard for me to pinpoint. Ultimately in my mind I just punt on the question and hope he can improve on his weaknesses. He recently said, when asked about hitting 50 points for the first time in his career, that the only numbers that matter are playoff wins and stanley cups. So as long as the team isn't in the playoffs, and he's a big part of the team, he clearly has things to improve on in his game. That's what he said.

And unless he's totally out to lunch he must be able to clearly see the holes in his game. Now the question is. What's he going to do about it? What is he going to be next year, and the year after, and when we're ready to contend? Those are the questions I'm interested in.

I have no issue having him on the ice at anytime it would just be better for him/us if he wasn’t playing his 30min when we need to close out game… Also is our issue really closing out game? we are usually trying to tie the game… I agree that he is a his best when in motion so PP isn’t is strong suit (although using a strategy with more motion and permutations might help not only Matheson but the PP overall) overall he is still the best option in most situations and still above avg considering the league.

The « hate » is just out of touch with reality just like Armia, because if a other player make a mistake that is bad luck when Matheson lose the puck he is making bad decisions with the puck… Look at every team, on how many team wouldn’t Matheson be #1 or 2, even before considering is contract, it probably less than 15 look at top offensive guy many are worst or less reliable on D than Matheson how many D playing 25min are playing 3min on the PK… the way people are talking make him seem like he is Gostisberhere when is fact he is 10time more reliable.
