Player Discussion Mike Matheson (Part 2) - Shoot on target please Edition

Matheson on fans criticism: ''There are a lot of people who love being negative. Sometimes they’re louder than people who are positive. I think those who are positive are the real fans of our team.''
Or you can just acknowledge that while you are able to do nice things on the ice, you do a lot of stupid things too.

Maybe the negativity is too much, but your hands aren’t really clean here Mike

Well I hope you never complain about top UFAs not wanting to sign with us because whether the criticism is accurate or not it's still going to make people think twice about wanting to be here.

They don’t give a shit. All they care about is money and paying less in taxes.

You’re making it seem like people are going to Matheson’s house and vandalizing it and him getting spat on by people on the streets. He’s not even getting booed when touching the puck. This really is nothing. Turn off twitter notifications. Omg poor guy.

If he didn't give a shit then he wouldn't have talked about it.

Sounds like you're just making excuses for what you know is shitty behaviour.

Yes, he's going to say he does a lot of stupid things on the ice during an interview.

I'm completely on board with the idea that pro athletes like this should absolutely detach themselves from social media. There's just not enough to be gained by it, and plenty that can be lost.

That being said, these guys shouldn't get to just dismiss legitimate criticism because of where it comes from. Mike Matheson has done some good things for this team, but there's a lot of bad too, and we shouldn't just sweep it away. Yes, the pass by Laine was bad. But Matheson has been around long enough to know to just make sure the puck gets deep so the other two guys can regroup or change. Instead, he tried to be cute, and gave up a 2 on 0. If he had tried to make the right play and it failed because of the bad pass, fine. But that's not what happened. He made a conscious decision to attempt a low-percentage play with two opposing players within stick check range. That's downright stupid. Not a mistake, not an accident, just stupid.

The reactions are completely disproportionate to what actually happened on the ice and the eventual outcome.

Maybe if fans can't handle players making mistakes, they should switch to watching cribbage

If he gave a shit he’d ask for a trade. They asked him about it.

Slaf received a lot more criticism about being a bust and shit and signed a large extension. Some players tune it out. This has no effect on signing UFAs like you claim.

Again, disproportionate how? Until he’s booed while carrying the puck like some players have, this is just normal criticism.

Maybe if players can’t handle owning up to mistakes and getting called out, they should go play in Utah.

And again, some posters here are acting like this is his one and only mistake when he typically makes a mind numbingly boneheaded play or two per game.

The fact we're still talking about it.

Okay so it’s not disproportionate since there hasn’t been a game since the game in question.
It is because it was a mistake made by 2 players in the OT of a 3 on 3 game, in the typical way that goals against are scored on in 3 on 3.

There was nothing egregious about that play other than fans overreactions.

The fact we're still talking about it 2 days later is just lame, and it's got nothing to do with the fac that there hasn't been a game in question since.

People just don't like Matheson for whatever reason and they found the perfect avenue for a dopamine hit. This narrative that he's some chronic mistake prone Dman is ridiculous.

Weirdo behavior if you ask me, but hey, to each their own.

If he gave a shit he’d ask for a trade. They asked him about it.
So there's only two possibilities not care about it at all or demand a trade?

Again sounds like you are just making excuses for shitty behaviour. Oh he didn't even have to see a therapist like Brisebois or take a year off like Drouin so it must be fine. What a load of sh*t.

The same Matheson "haters" are going to migrate over to Lane Hutson hate whenever Matheson isgone,e and the novelty of Hutson has worn off and he's making 8M yr.

The vast of majority of the criticism has been earned and not gone over the top.

Trying to pretend we shouldn't still be talking about it or something is asinine. You're a pro athlete. Make great plays, people will love you, make poor ones, people will hate you. It's the job, sorry.

Some journalist is out there asking Suzuki and Matheson what they think of the negativity Matheson got after last game to get some clicks or drum up interest but it's a nothing burger.

Won't stop the positivity police on here from posting more about other posters than the actual team on the ice.

This narrative that he's some chronic mistake prone Dman isn't some conspiracy coming from the ether lmao, it's from watching him be a chronic mistake prone Dman night in and night out

You’re the one blowing it out of proportion saying no one will want to sign here.

I’m not making an excuse, you’re simply overreacting to criticism that basically every big name player has faced in Montreal. They chastised Saku for not speaking French, called Kovalev lazy every second game. Subban sucks defensively. Markov doesn’t care. Plekanec isn’t good enough to be a 1C. Max is a playoff choker. The list goes on and on. This isn’t anything out of the ordinary, you’re trying to make him out to be a martyr.

Ditto for Lane Hutson.

They've got the puck on their stick a lot, they're going to make mistakes.

No, it’s about mistakes every single game. Sorry you can’t admit it. This goes back to when he started here.

And yeah, I hope an NHLer is smart enough to get that puck deep if he has no time and space. Both players were dumb. The difference is Matheson makes mistakes far too often.

Has absolutely nothing to do with me not being able to admit it, it's got to do with you or others not understanding the basic principle that players who play a lot and have the puck a lot, will make mistakes.

I swear, it's like some of y'all never ever watch other teams play.

Brother, they turned the puck over on a 3 on 3, the other team went back and scored.

The Habs have done the same to teams this season, it's happened and it's going to happen to the Habs and the Habs are also going to benefit from other teams making mistakes like that.

The fact it's dwelling in your mind like this, again, over a 3 on 3 goal is weird.

Great, never claimed otherwise. Matheson made a number of bad mistakes over the last few games, culminating in a terrible giveaway for the OT loss last game, so it's still being talked about.
