I think sports psychology suggests that athletes that can shut off from the game and pursue hobbies have a better relationship with the game and perform at a higher level when needed. It promotes significantly better mental health, and this is speculation, but that can help players move on so to speak from really low lows and really high highs. Sometimes you don't want to stay in that state for too long. Only thinking about hockey, baseball, football, etc can be mentally rough just as much as physically.
