I'm starting to wonder if this draft is being over rated like every other year. Just looking at stats, but in a year when there is apparently stars available through the 20's, we see utility players like Crouse rated occasionally in the top 10. Guys like Kocnecy and Barzal with underwhelming stats. If I'm not reading the hype or any mock drafts, I'd be seeing these guys, especially being smaller, as late 1sts or early 2nds.
There's no denying the star power in the top of the draft, and their elite level of potential, but I don't see a lot of star level play in too many more.
I know I can only go on stats, but when looking at a 5'10"-11" light weight center in the top 10-15 of a 'special' draft, I'd expect to see the stats Marner has, not Kocnecy.
Gauthier gets dogged around here for his lack of offensive progression despite having very obvious NHL assets like smarts, size and skating. Despite being a very rare shut down center. Now we have a draft with some guys being utility type players in top 6 roles that are scoring at a lower pace then FG and don't play his defensive game and don't have his size.
I know it's expected that these kids at their 2nd year post draft they will be scoring at over PPG, unlike FG, but I'm just not too excited to take a PF or small center that's scoring under PPG in the top 15 of a great draft. I'll take Roy, Marner, Zacha, maybe even Merkely over these guys.
I guess I'm just reading mock drafts and comparing them to the hype around here and I just don't get it. I'm not seeing any reason to believe that outside of the top 5-7, there is any real stars in this draft. It's no more exciting then the past few drafts. If we end up taking a kid between 10-20, I won't be expecting a top line player. Could even be a bust or expected bottom 6 like Biggs or Gauthier.
