OT: MIchigan Sports Thread: UM wins Natty Championship

I'm pretty confident they can do it. Darnold is a care-taker QB as best, not even as good as Purdy. He's not big-tme, and next week is nothing but big-time.
It's the Sunday night game. Ford Field will be an absolute snake pit. They even said they might get Montgomery and Raymond back for the game. I like the Lions' chances.

On a separate note, the NFL should change playoff seeding. Every year there's at least one awful division per conference, so only reward the top 3 division winners per side and then do the rest of the seedings by record. Neither Detroit nor Minnesota should have to go to LA or Tampa Bay when they're better than both those teams (who are each just the best of a bad bunch). Same deal for a 9-7 Texans team in the lousy AFC South. They can make a division win the first tie breaker if they want, but overall it would be a better reflection of actual performance.

Go Lions! No unforced errors or dumb penalties. Keep the offense balanced and get at least 1-2 takeaways or other key stops. JJ and the Vikings will get theirs, but hopefully Detroit can outlast them in a 38-31 kind of game.

Vikings could have been up 12-10 early if they didn't botch both of those 4th down red zone attempts, might be a different game. Congrats to the Lions, defense played a hell of a game tonight.

Gibbs is a beast.

As a fan of an NHL team that is worse than yours and somebody who wouldn't mind seeing a DET-BUF superbowl, congrats on the # 1 seed.

Out of curiosity, did I hear correctly that one of the (I have no idea what you call it) noises the Lions made coming out of the huddle was "roar?" Or were my ears hearing things?

That defense showed up. The red zone defense was elite. The pressure was tight all night. That was a statement by Glenn and team.

Took a sec for Goff and the offense to get going but JG had it going in that 2nd half.

I'm good with all the division winners getting playoff spots. But the seeding should be determined by the team's record

Lions road schedule next year is going to be brutal. Vikings and GB have much easier road schedules.

makes me wonder how exactly it's determined which games will be home vs which ones will be road because that seems like a very uneven home vs road schedule
It's one extra road game. Each team will either have one extra home or one extra away. I assume with money sharing, teams who get screwed and have more away games get a bigger cut.

I meant I wonder how it's determined which teams on the schedule they're facing on the road vs which they are facing at home, Washington,Philadelphia,Cincinnati,Baltimore,Kansas City,Rams is a much tougher set of games than the home schedule of Dallas,Giants,Cleveland,Pittsburgh,Tampa even accounting for the extra road game

Gotcha!

Yah, the schedulers really want higher ratings apparently, sticking the Lions against all of the league's best next season. Only the Bears and Giants will have a harder schedule...oooof for those two dumpster fires.

That's what happens when you're good though. The only games that aren't essentially the same difficulty as the rest of your division are the extra couple to fill out the schedule from the 2 divisions in your conference that you weren't matched with. And they match those games by where you finished the year before, so Detroit gets the 2 divisions winners.

Its why the NFC north and east are so difficult, they're matched up as the division that plays each other next year, and both division are really good. They're literally the top 8 difficulty lol

Lions vs Commanders, Saturday 1/18 at 8PM EST.
Another night game at Ford Field, and Washington was 29th against the run. I'll take the over on Jahmyr Gibbs total yards from scrimmage.

The big picture for this season keeps getting more interesting. Before last year, the last two significant Lions playoff runs ended against Washington and Philadelphia. Hopefully they keep checking those "revenge tour" boxes off the list and the train keeps rolling.

Karsh and Anderson seem to think this was the best possible match up for Detroit, I don't love a mobile QB though

Daniels will likely get a few first downs using his legs. But he's not built the same way as a Josh Allen or a Lamar Jackson to truly be a second running back of regularly taking hits.

Even in a worst case scenario where he runs for 100 yards and a score or two, I still don't see Washington being able to outscore the 30+ points that the Lions should hang on the Commanders. I see Detroit just running it down their throat as often as they want, which also pads their time of possession and limits the clock Daniels will have to work with.

Of the choices they had left, probably. I wasn't rooting for anyone but it's not easy to beat a divisional opponent 3 times in a season.

I'm more surprised about Tampa Bay. They had some major gaffes in the 4th quarter that cost them.
