Del Zotto started off okay, played an average of 20 min per game thru the first 22 games. And I thought he for more than a few games he was their best D. A good puck mover, created some offensive chances but his Achilles heel is that he's a terrible defensemen in the sense of what a defenseman's most important job is - defense. And on the Flyers, who have no dfense to begin with, that's just not a good mix for a new player coming to the team to try to save his career.
His other problem is he has severe confidence issues. I didn't like the signing for that reason, I saw enough of him prior to arriving here to know he was not the kind if shaky player that would fit into Berube's defensive disaster zone. Too much was expected of him and without a true #1 or 2 (or even 3...) D on the team, he was not in good spot , fitting it to new tam is hard enough, more on a D who has the hardes tjob and has to learn to gel with a new partner./system.
Berube thought he was taking too many chances, playing to risky and leaving the Flyers at a disadvantage and benched him in November. That has now lasted for weeks, he has played only 2 games in Dec and not since 12/6.
I don't like Berube at all and this is just another example of his player mismanagement. Any good or positive internal initiative that MDZ built up in Oct/Nov is gone now, you can't bench a player for weeks and espa a young one with confidence issues and expect a good outcome.
I didn't see any reason to do this to him, esp given the amount of mistakes the rest of the them make, esp Schenn.
MDZ has been openly vocal about not being happy having the rug pulled out from under him and how he feels it's not fair he was benched, and that won't help.
It's a shame, I just don't this working out for him, if Berube wasn't happy with his play , you have a coaching staff , vidoes, ways to correct that. Benching a player who pretty good up to that point for weeks just isn't the way to fix that.
